HammerFall To Release Anniversary Edition Of Debut

Sweden's HammerFall will release the 20th Anniversary Edition of the celebrated debut record "Glory To The Brave" on December 1st. The release is chock full of bonus material.

When HammerFall released the debut album "Glory To The Brave" 20 years ago, the five Swedes launched a true heavy metal revival overnight. While the mainstream still concentrated on grunge and the metal scene was dominated by black metal and gothic acts, this traditional metal record was like a godsend and heralded a new era. "For us, the immense success was a real shock in the beginning," singer Joacim Cans remembers, because suddenly, HammerFall was considered to be the saviours of true metal. They received countless rave reviews from magazines, Wacken Open Air booked the band for a prime time slot on the main stage, Kai Hansen invited the band personally to join as support on the Gamma Ray tour and the CD entered the German album charts at the amazing position of #38 – an unbelievable achievement during this time. "Our advantage was that no one has expected us and our album. We only did what we wanted and felt compelled to do."

This passion was not least influenced by German metal acts like Accept, Helloween and Stormwitch, but also by other underdogs like Warlord or Picture. "I'm still very proud of this album, it has turned our lives upside down" the vocalist sums up, and is equally proud of the extensive re-release of the cult album, which will be released on December 1st via Nuclear Blast. The re-release includes the completely re-mastered version of "Glory To The Brave," a radio edit of the legendary title track as well as the great cover version of the Stormwich classic "Ravenlord." The bonus CD will include six live versions of "The Metal Age," "Steel Meets Steel," "Stone Cold," "Glory To The Brave," "Hammerfall" and "The Dragon Lies Bleeding," as well as a medley from numerous tracks off of their first-class debut album, which was recorded live this year at a show in Berlin. 70,000 Tons Of Metal, Day Two: "The Marathon Day"

I woke around 7am – excited for what was not only the first full day of the cruise…but what I hoped would be the most concerts I’ve ever attended in any single day of my life. It was all mapped out…but the question is – would the pool deck be ready?

I headed up to Deck 12 to assess the situation…and once I made it to the yellow police tape, I realized – here we go again. In 2015, the high winds at sea forced the crew to abandon building the pool deck stage (the largest at sea) until the morning. It took them until 6pm to get it ready for Soulfly’s set, forcing all other shows to be reworked indoors. This year, the plan going in seemed to be to rework the shows where available – likely at the end of the evening within the venues inside. I recalled my joke to Siegfried Sammer of Visions of Atlantis – “I’ll see you at 10am…IF – and that’s a big IF…the pool deck is ready.” Well, it appears the jinx was on because Visions of Atlantis would be bumped to Saturday. The guard told me that 11:30am was the target time for completion, which is still way better than 2015. More...

Sunday Old School: Hammerfall

It always feels when looking through the Sunday Old School archives that power metal is an area that gets severely neglected. Of course, there have been some of the big names covered such as Helloween and Blind Guardian, but such acts are few and far between the likes of Napalm Death and Testament. So this week, we’re taking a step to rectify this by focusing one of the most popular bands in the history of power metal, Hammerfall.

The band was formed in 1993 by guitarist Oscar Dronjak, following his departure from extreme metal band Ceremonial Oath, who invited his former bandmate Jesper Strömblad (who had also just formed his own band, In Flames) to join him as the drummer. They were soon joined by bassist Johan Larsson and Niklas Sundin (who were soon replaced by Fredrik Larsson and In Flames guitarist, Glenn Ljungström,) as well as Dark Tranquillity vocalist, Mikael Stanne. Because of the members time mostly being spent with their other bands, Hammerfall was treated as a side project for the most part and had few original songs of their own, mainly performing covers by bands such as Judas Priest and Alice Cooper .

They mostly performed at a local music competition called Rockslaget, which they reached the semi finals of in 1996, at which point Stanne was unable to perform with the band and so, with the initial plan of making him a temporary member, Hammerfall brought in singer Joacim Cans, who impressed them enough that although the group didn’t make the final, he was made the new vocalist on a permanent basis after the show. The band started taking themselves a little more seriously after and recorded a short live performance, which eventually earned them a record deal with the Dutch label Vic Records. More...
