70,000 Tons Of Metal, Day Two: "The Marathon Day"

I woke around 7am – excited for what was not only the first full day of the cruise…but what I hoped would be the most concerts I’ve ever attended in any single day of my life. It was all mapped out…but the question is – would the pool deck be ready?

I headed up to Deck 12 to assess the situation…and once I made it to the yellow police tape, I realized – here we go again. In 2015, the high winds at sea forced the crew to abandon building the pool deck stage (the largest at sea) until the morning. It took them until 6pm to get it ready for Soulfly’s set, forcing all other shows to be reworked indoors. This year, the plan going in seemed to be to rework the shows where available – likely at the end of the evening within the venues inside. I recalled my joke to Siegfried Sammer of Visions of Atlantis – “I’ll see you at 10am…IF – and that’s a big IF…the pool deck is ready.” Well, it appears the jinx was on because Visions of Atlantis would be bumped to Saturday. The guard told me that 11:30am was the target time for completion, which is still way better than 2015. More...

Sunday Old School: Hammerfall

It always feels when looking through the Sunday Old School archives that power metal is an area that gets severely neglected. Of course, there have been some of the big names covered such as Helloween and Blind Guardian, but such acts are few and far between the likes of Napalm Death and Testament. So this week, we’re taking a step to rectify this by focusing one of the most popular bands in the history of power metal, Hammerfall.

The band was formed in 1993 by guitarist Oscar Dronjak, following his departure from extreme metal band Ceremonial Oath, who invited his former bandmate Jesper Strömblad (who had also just formed his own band, In Flames) to join him as the drummer. They were soon joined by bassist Johan Larsson and Niklas Sundin (who were soon replaced by Fredrik Larsson and In Flames guitarist, Glenn Ljungström,) as well as Dark Tranquillity vocalist, Mikael Stanne. Because of the members time mostly being spent with their other bands, Hammerfall was treated as a side project for the most part and had few original songs of their own, mainly performing covers by bands such as Judas Priest and Alice Cooper .

They mostly performed at a local music competition called Rockslaget, which they reached the semi finals of in 1996, at which point Stanne was unable to perform with the band and so, with the initial plan of making him a temporary member, Hammerfall brought in singer Joacim Cans, who impressed them enough that although the group didn’t make the final, he was made the new vocalist on a permanent basis after the show. The band started taking themselves a little more seriously after and recorded a short live performance, which eventually earned them a record deal with the Dutch label Vic Records. More...

Hammerfall Teams Up With NHL Team

The players of the NHL team Minnesota Wild began the 2014-15 season with two shut-outs against the Colorado Avalanche. Now the team is pleased to announce that for all upcoming home games at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul, the Minnesota Wild will be receiving a special welcome from Swedish heavy metal group HammerFall.

"When we first discovered the song 'Fury Of The Wild’ by HammerFall, it was like a gift because everything about it fits so well to what we try to do for Game Presentation,” states Minnesota Wild team representative Paul Loomis. “The energy, the drive, and of course just having ‘Wild’ in the title makes it a perfect fit. And for the band to go out of their way to make an instrumental version rocks the State of Hockey!”

HammerFall lead singer Joacim Cans comments on the alliance with Minnesota Wild: “It's a tremendous honor to have a team in the NHL use one of our songs as their intro, and Minnesota is a great fit due to the Scandinavian heritage of many of the state's inhabitants. We always felt heavy metal and hockey was a great mix, and this is the ultimate proof. The State of Hockey has got new fans in the Templars of Steel!”

The next Minnesota Wild home game is against the Arizona Coyotes on October 23rd. Watch Swedish defensemen Jonas Brodin & Christian Folin, forward Mikael Granlund of Finland, Minneapolis’ own Zach Parise, and the other stars of Minnesota Wild as they take to the ice with HammerFall’s “Fury Of The Wild” blasting in the arena!

This past September, HammerFall’s ninth studio album "(r)Evolution" (reviewed here) debuted at #1 on the American Billboard Heatseekers chart and clinched the band’s highest-ever first-week sales record in the United States.

Hammerfall Announces Lineup Changes

The Swedish heavy metal pioneers in Hammerfall are still enjoying the success of latest full-length record "(r)Evolution," but today the band also has to make the following major announcement:

“Life in a heavy metal band is indeed filled with twists and turns, highs and lows, ups and downs. On Monday, we rolled out our own whiskey, Legacy Of Kings. Today is a shocking and monumental day for all, Hammerfall members and fans alike: Anders Johansson has decided to leave the band, after 15 years as the drummer. Brought on by increasing musical differences, as well as a career in the music industry that spans almost four decades, he has come to the conclusion that enough is enough.

"But fear not, we have already formulated a plan to get us through this even stronger. As a replacement we have found a most excellent drummer in David Wallin, who most notably has been beating the skins in the Swedish industrial force Pain. David will fill the void left by 'The Swedish Tank' with his youthful intensity and fantastic musicianship during the upcoming tour. We wish Anders all the best in his future endeavors and hope that 15 years can’t be erased that easily.

"Also, bassist Fredrik Larsson will have his second child in December, and is therefore on parental leave through March. But we think you will like the choice to fill his shoes. For anyone who is the least bit familiar with Hammerfall, this one needs no introduction: handling the 4-string duty in Fredrik’s absence, none other than former guitar player Stefan Elmgren has agreed to make a triumphant return to the band! Yet another reason not to miss catching us live on the upcoming tours, this will be a very unique constellation.

"So it is with mixed emotions we say goodbye to an old friend and welcome an even older one back into the fold. The Swedish Templars of Steel cannot and will not be subdued, we will carry on heeding the call as long as the crimson thunder still is flowing in our veins. It is not the end of anything, it’s the dawn of a new era. And we welcome it with our hammers high!” More...
