With Sonar closing, the location of 2013's Maryland DeathFest XI was up in the air. The organizers have finally announced that the fest will be held in the same location as last year, and will be expanded. Maryland DeathFest XI will take place in Baltimore, Maryland on Memorial Day weekend, May 23-26, 2013. Tickets go on sale on October 15th at 12 pm (EST). You can read the entire update below:
We're a day early with this announcement, but we can finally let you know where MDF XI will be taking place.
In a nutshell, we will be returning to the property formerly known as Sonar, and will be at least doubling the amount of outside space that we've been used to utilizing. We realize that it's a bit of a mind fuck to wait around for a few months just to hear that the fest is returning to the same place, but truth be told, the other places we looked at were either not able to give us a definite answer anytime soon, and/or had too many inconveniences that we did not want to put the fans through. During the venue search, it was brought to our attention that the new owners of the property were willing to collaborate with us, so we decided to go through with returning to a familiar place that is close to the hotels and conveniences of downtown Baltimore.
The additional space outside will allow us to comfortably accommodate the crowd, and will allow more room for the MDF vendor village, food vendors/food trucks, places to sit, and other new additions like misting tents to escape the possibility of it being hotter than it should be that weekend. There will be two outside stages plus the stage inside. Due to the new configuration outside, the placement of the outside stages will likely be different.
As for the building itself, there are some renovations currently taking place, but the rooms will be used exactly how they have been in the past, and it will be air conditioned throughout.
We would also like to announce the addition of a second inside stage at Baltimore Soundstage, which is a 1/2 mile walk away from the former Sonar (at 124 Market Place), and will be used from Friday-Sunday. This will be a smaller show without a barricade that will feature mostly hardcore and punk bands, and it will be scheduled in a way that should not conflict with anything going on at the former Sonar compound. All of the bands for this stage will be included in next week's announcement on October 9th.

Brooklyn Vegan, has announced the lineup to Chaos in Tejas Festival 2012 held in Austin, Texas on May 31st. The eighth installment once again shows metal meddling with punk. This year The sludgy pace of power violence finds the perfect partner in doom metal. Winter and Loss will cover the capital in morose molasses, while Ghoul, Toxic Holocaust and a reunited Nasum will shift the festival into higher gears.
The initial lineup is as follows:
the Mob (England)
Tear it Up
Warrior Kids (France)
Hank Wood and the Hammerheads
The list of bands above is only an initial lineup. One hundred-plus more bands will be announced in the future.
Nashville metal act Loss has issued the following announcement about entering the recording studio:
"We, Loss, are booked at Grand Palace Studio in Murfreesboro, TN the first and second weekends in October to record the Despond album for Profound Lore Records. We will be joined in the studio with close friend and long time supporter Mr. Zack Allen of Zosimos etc. as our engineer.
"Artwork will be handled by Mr. David V. D'Andrea and there will be a special guest vocal performance by Mr. Brett Campbell on the song Silent, and Completely Overcome. Please support Pallbearer. They are on our top friends here and have an amazing demo available for free (download) on their site. Truly some of the saddest music we have felt in a long time and Brett has a voice as clear and and moving as a funeral bell chime. Let the funeral begin. Fatum Vestri Vita.
"P.S. we still have available copies of Life Without Hope...Death Without Reason on LP as well as the new t-shirt design in all sizes both $13 post paid or $25 for both."
Loss has issued the following update about entering the recording studio:
"Things are slow. As slow as a funeral march in winter here. We enter the studio soon to record Despond for Profound Lore Records with our good friend Zack from the amazing Zosimos at the helm in the studio. So those with patience will be rewarded. Working very hard on the album but are, well for lack of a better word, doomed it seems....set backs, illness, disease and snow make things harder in the winter and add on top of that the depression that comes with the season. But things are flowing...
"Life Without Hope...Death Without Reason will see its vinyl release very soon on Parasitic Records. A 10" with a poster. 180 gram black wax. No shirts are available at this time...but soon perhaps with the release of the 10". All for now...not too long....but long enough..."
Each week in "Unearthing the Metal Underground," we'll be putting a few quality underground bands in the spotlight in an attempt to get the word out about them. Although I can't say I've ever had the pleasure of visiting the country music capital of the world, I can say I've been delving into their more depressing side. More depressing than a bottle of whiskey and singing about heartbreaks to your dog? You bet, because we're delving into three new doom metal bands from the American mid-east.
To start off, the band Loss is one of my favorite underground bands. Coming onto the scene in 2004 with the lauded "Life Without Hope...Death Without Reason" demo, Loss plays an epic neoclassicical death/doom of a particularly morbid variety. Loss's last release was a four way split including Aussie funeral doom legend Mournful Congregation, which should hold the band's pedigree to be suffice. Whispers in the trees were that the band may have a full length coming out on Profound Lore Records called "Despond," so keep tuned to Metal Underground for future news. Until then, the "Life Without Hope..." demo is available to hear on the band's MySpace player. More...
Profound Lore has announced the signing of LOSS. Hailing from Nashville Tennessee, Loss has already made a name for themselves within the doom metal scene with their "Life Without Hope" EP, several splits with such worthy acts as NECROS CHRISTOS and WORSHIP, and most recently the Fo(u)r Burials release in which they were part of alongside the likes of MOURNFUL CONGREGATION, ORTHODOX, and OTESANEK.
Their official debut album will be unleashed upon North America during the first half of 2009. Japan's Weird Truth will handle the release on the other side of the pond.
Currently the band has finished writing the material and plans on entering the studio soon.
