The Destro Bassist Missing, Band Cancels Show

Brad Kirkland, bass player from Metal Blade recording artists THE DESTRO, reportedly disappeared before the band's show on Tuesday, October 27 at Fubar in St. Louis, MO. The band called the venue and cancelled the show minutes before they were due on stage. The band will reschedule the date sometime in the near future after they locate their bassist. Also on the bill co-headlining for the night were Saint Louis' own metallers DIVIDE THE PAST and DRAG THE DEAD.

Tales From The Pit: Jono Helps a 1-Legged Man Mosh

We've been talking to bands to hear their best pit stories. This week, we've got a tale from Jono, drummer for The Destro:

"All too often on the road, the words "I'll never forget this" are uttered out of my mouth. A stop in Wichita Kansas was the perfect opportunity. The night goes as typical as any given show night, a set full of intense headbanging, plenty of booze to counter the side effects, and just enough pointless conversation with strangers to entertain yourself. In the middle of one of those conversations, i was asked to do something i simply couldn't refuse, pick up and assist this dude in the pit....that was completely wasted....and missing a leg. i picked up and spun the guy fast enough to inflict some serious hurt on anyone in the way of his roundhouse kick. No one was safe from our crippling violence, including us. We were eventually ganged up on and taken to the ground. Turns out picking up a guy with one leg is way harder than it sounds. Watching my inebriated attempts had to be agonizing for everyone paying attention. I finally got him up. He pounded my fist, showed some horns, and hopped off. I’ll never forget that; dude was a rager."

In the next installment of "Tales From The Pit" we'll hear from Matt Fox of Shai Hulud.

The Destro Recording New Album

Texas metallers The Destro have just entered the studio with Unearth's Ken Susi to record their yet-to-be-titled sophomore album on Ironclad Recordings. Says the press release from The Destro,

"The last 6 months have been filled with personal loss and other life changing experiences in many of our lives. We were able to direct all of our energy from anger, stress, sadness and frustration focus it into a very personal record. After many ups and downs in the last 2 years through touring, our perception has solidified our determination to deliver an indestructible sound that is our own."

The album is slated to come out sometime this August.

NEMHF 2009 Adds Third Stage

The New England Metal and Hardcore Festival will introduce an additional stage this year dedicated to up and coming bands.

The third stage, sponsored by Deathcote Records, will be located at Chasers Nightclub, located behind the Palladium on the corner of Martin Luther King and Commercial streets. The main festival will be taking place at the Palladium.

“There are so many great bands and not enough time to get all of them on during the course of two days,” said festival co-organizer Sott Lee. “Adding a third stage is a great way for us to showcase some of the developing bands and it’s a terrific opportunity for these bands to play alongside some of today’s top metal and hardcore bands.”

The New England Metal and Hardcore Festival will take place on Friday, April 17 and Saturday, April 18, with the Atticus pre-party on Thursday, April 16. This year’s event is presented by Randall Amplifiers, Washburn Guitars and Eden Electronics. Metal Blade Records will present the main stage. Prosthetic Records will present the second stage.

The Atticus-sponsored pre-party will be a unique event that will be combining film and music, kicking off with a screening of official film sponsor Anchor Bay's film "Crowley," co-written by none other than Iron Maiden vocalist Bruce Dickinson. The provocative supernatural thriller is the tale of a virtual reality experiment gone wrong, sending the soul of the British occultist Aleister Crowley into the body of a shy university professor. But even as Crowley creates all-new orgies of depraved pleasures and black magic, he is now preparing to unleash the ultimate occult event upon the world. Also showing is "Anvil! The Story of Anvil," a sometimes revealing, sometimes hilarious documentary about the legendary Canadian metal band. The movie follows best friends Robb Reiner and Lips as they make a pact to rock together forever. Their band, Anvil, hailed as the "demi-gods of Canadian metal, " influenced a musical generation that includes Metallica, Slayer, and Anthrax, despite never hitting the big time. Following a calamitous European tour, Lips and Robb, now in their fifties, set off to record their 13th album in one last attempt to fulfill their boyhood dreams. The film will be followed by a performance by the band itself. The pre-party will also be held at the Palladium. Admission is free with a weekend pass or $15 for non-ticket holders.

Prices this year are $40 for Friday, $45 for Saturday or $79 for a 2-day ticket that also includes free admission to the kick off party on Thursday. Tickets are available at all Strawberries, FYE Stores, online at tickets.com or by calling (800) 477-6849. Tickets are available now.

Bands scheduled to perform this year include: More...

Ozzfest 2008 Deemed A Success By Organizers

Billboard.com reports: Ozzfest 2008, with Metallica and Ozzy Osbourne as headliners, grossed nearly $3.5 million and drew close to 30,000 people to Dallas' Pizza Hut Park, according to producers Sharon Osbourne and AEG Live.

Sponsored by Affliction Clothing, this year's Ozzfest marked the return of the 13-year-old hard music brand after a free run at amphitheaters last year. This year's one-off event did "fantastically well," Sharon Osbourne told Billboard.com. "The one thing is you want for the kids to go away and keep talking about what a great show it was, and that's what they're doing."

In addition to Metallica and Osbourne, mainstage acts were Serj Tankian, Hellyeah, Johnathan Davis, Cavalera Conspiracy, Shadows Fall, Apocalyptica, and In This Moment. The second stage featured Sevendust, Devildriver, Kingdom of Sorrow, Soilent Green, Witchcraft and Goatwhore. On the third stage were the Sword, Drowning Pool, Rigor Mortis, Within Chaos, The Destro and "battle of the bands" winners Debris and Black Tooth.

Osbourne says plans are for Ozzfest to return to Dallas again next summer, likely as a two-day festival, and other cities are also being considered. "Ozzfest ain't going anywhere," she says. "We do try and shake things up and experiment. We're not the old donkey that plods on doing the same sh*t."
