In early 2001, vocalist Tim Lambesis began writing music and lyrics for what would become As I Lay Dying. After meeting up with guitar player Evan White and drummer Jordan Mancino the group decided to move forward as a three piece. A month later they hit the studio to record “Beneath the Encasing of Ashes” released on Pluto Records in June 2001. Following its release, the band completed a number of tours. Through persistence and hard work “Beneath the Encasing of Ashes” became the top selling Pluto release.
Ready to move forward, As I Lay Dying recorded five songs for a split release with American Tragedy. The evolved follow up caught the attention of a number of people including various record labels. After a 70-day summer tour, the band came home to prepare for the things ahead. In March of 2003 As I Lay Dying signed with Metal Blade Records while recording a full length entitled “Frail Words Collapse.”
This 12-song release features dynamic improvements in both songwriting and musicianship. “Frail Words Collapse” (July 1, 2003) is full of brutal and emotionally driven songs that transition seamlessly from precise melodies to neck snapping rhythms.
With the rigorous tour schedule a new record demands, Tim Lambesis and Jordan Mancino decided to solidify the lineup. After touring with a number of fill ins, As I Lay Dying became complete with the addition of musicians Clinton Norris, Phil Sgrosso, and Nicholas Hipa.

San Diego metal band As I Lay Dying posted a new tour diary video recapping week five of its current European tour with Amon Amarth. The band is out in support of the band's latest release "Decas" a compilation of covers, remixes and re-recordings released earlier this month on Metal Blade Records.

As I Lay Dying premiering a new music video for the band's take on the Judas Priest classic "Electric Eye" through www.Ulitmate-Guitar.com. The song appears on the recently released EP, "Decas, "which marks the band's 10 year anniversary.
The clip was shot with director Paul Brown (My Chemical Romance, Staind, Stone Sour) at El Mirage Lake, a dry lake bed in the Mojave Desert of San Bernardino County, California.
"After a long day of sunburns and drought out in the desert I'm glad to be done fighting scorpions for the filming of Electric Eye. We came out victorious, but we probably couldn't have done it without the classic metal inspiration of Halford and Priest's legendary guitar melodies," explains front man Tim Lambesis.

The "Decas" EP also features three brand new songs, three additional covers that pay homage to just a few of the bands that have influenced As I Lay Dying, and remixes.
As I Lay Dying's latest release, the "Decas" EP, is a collection of new tracks, covers, remixes, and more, which reached #2 on the iTunes Rock chart and landed at #61 on Billboard's Top 200 in its debut week. iTunes also offered a free track ("Paralyzed"), which was downloaded by a staggering 125,000 people in one week.
Meant to tide fans over until the release of the band's new studio LP (due for release next year), the "Decas" EP marks As I Lay Dying's decade of making music and features 3 new songs, 3 cover songs, remixes, and more.
As vocalist Tim Lambesis explains, "We wanted to at least do an EP when the idea first came up. We were touring at the time and knew we wouldn't have time to put together an entire album of new material. Decas literally means ten, and to me it is a collection of songs to celebrate our ten-year anniversary as a band. We were able to round up three new songs that we felt represented the different sides to our band. There's a song you'd generally expect from us, one on the heavier side, and then one of the most melodic songs we've ever done. We took a similar approach on the cover songs. We wanted one song that represented a thrashier, heavier influence. Interestingly enough we were asked to do a Slayer cover song with an anti-war theme for a video game months earlier, so that worked out perfectly. Next, we represented the melodic guitar influence with Judas Priest who is responsible for starting much of that within metal. Lastly, I came up with the idea to do a simple, raw, energetic song that was outside of our genre but still influential in some of our musical upbringing."
