Background

In early 2001, vocalist Tim Lambesis began writing music and lyrics for what would become As I Lay Dying. After meeting up with guitar player Evan White and drummer Jordan Mancino the group decided to move forward as a three piece. A month later they hit the studio to record “Beneath the Encasing of Ashes” released on Pluto Records in June 2001. Following its release, the band completed a number of tours. Through persistence and hard work “Beneath the Encasing of Ashes” became the top selling Pluto release.

Ready to move forward, As I Lay Dying recorded five songs for a split release with American Tragedy. The evolved follow up caught the attention of a number of people including various record labels. After a 70-day summer tour, the band came home to prepare for the things ahead. In March of 2003 As I Lay Dying signed with Metal Blade Records while recording a full length entitled “Frail Words Collapse.”

This 12-song release features dynamic improvements in both songwriting and musicianship. “Frail Words Collapse” (July 1, 2003) is full of brutal and emotionally driven songs that transition seamlessly from precise melodies to neck snapping rhythms.

With the rigorous tour schedule a new record demands, Tim Lambesis and Jordan Mancino decided to solidify the lineup. After touring with a number of fill ins, As I Lay Dying became complete with the addition of musicians Clinton Norris, Phil Sgrosso, and Nicholas Hipa.

Metalunderground.com Official Podcast, Episode 10

This past Tuesday, April 1st, dawned with a bang and ended with the agonized wail of countless deceived, angry, and fed-up folks. It's what the kids these days might call "butthurt." Even in this high-speed age of unlimited information, it seems that some still have trouble checking the calendar or fact-checking stories.

Your Metalunderground.com Official Podcast co-hosts, Kevin Perez (n0thinghead) and Mike Smith (OverkillExposure) found this all quite amusing. So in the irreverent spirits of Mark Twain, Orson Welles, and The Onion, they decided Tuesday evening to chuck all journalistic ethics and decency right out the window and wage a valiant, side-splitting battle against truth.

This week's episode is one hundred percent fact-free, and features a tongue-in-cheek rundown of some of Metalunderground.com's 2014 April Fools highlights, posted as headlines throughout Tuesday.

Among the lampooned: every single member of Metallica (in what is sure to be an evil, thrashing comeback effort, "Hell Hath No Fury"), prison escapee Tim Lambesis (As I Lay Dying), evasive interviewee Phil Anselmo (Pantera, etc.), would-be cinematic deity Dave Mustaine (Megadeth), and noted Oscar-lacking actor Leonardo DiCaprio, whose "Meshuggah face" in the recent hit "The Wolf Of Wall Street" has earned him an onstage guest appearance with the twisted Swedish metal titans.

Please forgive the avalanche of lies and silly humor; we advise you to remove your "serious" caps for this episode. Also, a few bong rips beforehand wouldn't hurt. Take a listen here and enjoy!

Metalunderground.com Official Podcast, Episode 5

Co-hosts Kevin Perez (n0thinghead) and Mike Smith (OverkillExposure) kick off this week’s podcast episode by tackling some of the cultural peculiarities of hardcore crowds versus metal crowds, with a specific focus on the irritating “hardcore dancing” trend.

Next up, a public service warning. Mike shares a disturbing story related by singer Tommy “Vext” Cummings (Snot, ex-Divine Heresy), in which he confesses to have been manipulated and deceived by a conniving “Catfish” at large within the online metal network. Beware a Facebook profile by the name of “Elizabeth George” and the Twitter handle "SWEET_BGIRL" with multiple connections to metal industry types; this individual is a dangerous con artist.

Also, on a related and semi-prophetic note, refer to the opening segment of the recent OpEd “From Dicks To Chicks.”

Finally, the news of the week: Kevin and Mike discuss the fate of As I Lay Dying and Austrian Death Machine bandleader Tim Lambesis, who has just pled guilty to the attempted contract murder of his estranged wife. As they explore the implications, your hosts do not shy away from facing various matters of morality, personal responsibility, standards, and accountability.

Take a listen here, enjoy, and offer us your feedback.

Tim Lambesis To Serve Time For Murder Plot

After being arrested in May of 2013 for attempting to hire an undercover police agent to murder his estranged wife, Tim Lambesis (Austrian Death Machine, As I Lay Dying) is now going to be serving up to nine years in jail, according to an update from NBC San Diego.

An excerpt from the news site reads:

The singer of the Grammy-nominated Christian metal band "As I Lay Dying" pleaded guilty to his role in a murder-for-hire plot.

Carlsbad resident Tim Lambesis entered the change of plea in court Tuesday, admitting that he hired a hit man to kill his estranged wife. As a result of his change of plea, Lambesis will serve nine years according to a court clerk.

It's not clear yet if the "9 years" referenced in the article was a maximum or the official amount of time for a plea deal, as Lambesis has not had an official sentencing hearing yet. Further info will be forthcoming.

Despite Lambesis' arrest, Austrian Death Machine continued on with the crowd funded third album "Triple Brutal," which is set for release on April 1st. It's unclear at this point what the band will be doing for fans who were to receive a visit from Lambesis as part of the perks for donating to the campaign. More...

Tim Lambesis Gets House Arrest Exemption

Tim Lambesis of As I Lay Dying and Austrian Death Machine had his bail lowered back in May, and has been out on house arrest while awaiting trial for allegedly hiring an undercover agent to murder his estranged wife.

The San Diego Reader has now reported Lambesis will be allowed an exception for his house arrest to seek physical therapy for a neck injury. Excerpts from the story follow:

"Defendant Timothy Lambesis is currently on house arrest and due to the restrictions of his release cannot leave the house to seek medical attention for the neck injury from which he is currently suffering.” This statement was made by the defendant’s private attorney, Thomas Warwick Jr., who filed papers asking a court to allow Lambesis exceptions to his house arrest.

Superior Court Judge Kimberlee Lagotta signed an order allowing “defendant to go to his physical therapy appointments” the same day the motion was filed, August 2, 2013.

The lead singer for the heavy metal band As I Lay Dying particularly requested, and was granted, permission to go to a therapist named Lanele Stafford at Coast Kinesiology in Del Mar. There was one other location named as a destination for therapy, an orthopedic group in La Jolla, which was also allowed by the court.

Tim Lambesis will return to court on September 16th for his next hearing. The date of the actual trial has not been set at this time.

Killswitch Engage Drummer Breaks Collarbone

Killswitch Engage has checked in with the following announcement about recruiting a fill-in drummer for upcoming tour dates:

"We have some not so good news to announce. Our drummer Justin Foley recently had a bicycle accident and broke his collarbone. So he will not be able to do this upcoming Asia/Europe tour that begins later this week. Luckily we were able to find a replacement drummer on short notice, so we will not be canceling any dates.

"The replacement drummer will be our longtime friend Jordan Mancino from As I Lay Dying. Barring any unforeseen issues, Justin should be back on track in time for our upcoming North American tour with Lamb of God, which starts in late October. Killswitch would like to thank our Asia and Europe fans in advance for understanding. As always, thank you so much for the support." More...

Tim Lambesis Has Bail Lowered

Tim Lambesis (As I Lay Dying, Austrian Death Machine, Pyrithion) was arrested last week for allegedly attempting to hire an undercover officer to murder his wife Meggan, who filed for divorce last year.

Lambesis subsequently plead "not guilty" to the charges, and his bail was set at $3 million. Now NBC San Diego reports that Lambesis received a new bail hearing, and his bail has been lowered to $2 million, although he still remains in custody at this point and apparently has not made bail.

According to the article, Tim's attorney Tom Warwick has now made reference to steroid usage - which was widely speculated to be at the root of the issue when news of the arrest first broke. An excerpt follows:

The frontman started taking supplements, then steroids, that led to what Warwick referred to as “changes in his physiological and mental status.” He went from 170 to 220-pounds and in his attorney’s words, “Was not the same person. He was irritable and lost God.” A forensic psychiatrist who consulted with the defense said Lambesis got “roid rage” after using steroids.

His attorney said Lambesis is now off steroids, going through withdrawal, and in total isolation in jail for protection from other inmates. He’s also getting personal counseling from a jail chaplain.

As Lambesis remains in jail, As I Lay Dying has dropped off the coming Killswitch Engage tour, with Darkest Hour and The Word Alive joining on the supporting slots instead.

Separating Art From the Artist

I personally find the idea of putting people on a pedestal to be incredibly naive and childish. At some point, whoever you idolize as being perfect will turn out to have some sort of horrible character flaws that you'll never be able to forgive. People are human, and with that comes not being perfect. Hence why I'm able to say that I don't mind somebody's offstage behavior as much as I do the actual music. In the same way, I don't care about lyrical themes that embrace politics that I disagree with. More...

Footage Of Tim Lambesis' Arraignment Available

After pleading "not guilty" on charges of soliciting the murder of his estranged wife, footage has now been posted online from Tim Lambesis' arraignment, which is available below.

During the proceedings the prosecution outlined its case and stated what allegedly occurred. According to the prosecution, Lambesis gave an undercover agent money, pictures of his wife, gate codes for her home, and dates when the murder could occur, along with specifically stating he wanted her dead - apparently all of which was recorded on audio.

In addition to the recent statement made by Tim's primary band As I Lay Dying, the members of his new outfit Pyrithion also comment:

"I want to thank everyone for their patience and for their concerns and good wishes that you have shown the band this last week. Obviously this is a situation that can't be planned for and therefor we have been trying not to speak out of turn. As of now, we don't have any more information on the situation than what we can find in the news but we want to make sure this plays out how it needs to and that we don't in any way interfere. Thank you so much for the continued support everyone, it means a ton to us."

Sheriff's Department Comments On Tim Lambesis

In news that has shocked the metalverse, Tim Lambesis of As I Lay Dying was arrested yesterday for allegedly soliciting an undercover officer to murder his wife.

Artisan News Service has now posted a video clip online with more details, including an interview with a member of the San Diego Sheriff's Department discussing the investigation and the arrest of Lambesis.

Although there has been no statement from any of Lambesis' various bands at this point (As I Lay Dying, Pyrithion, Austrian Death Machine), the San Diego Sheriff website does list Tim as being detained and set for arraignment tomorrow (May 9th) for charges of solicitation and conspiracy to commit murder.

It is assumed at this time that the band's tour with Killswitch Engage will be cancelled. Tim Lambesis also recently launched a crowd funding campaign to record a new Austrian Death Machine album, and the fate of that recording is likewise considered to be on hold or canceled. Tim also posted a video online just a few days ago defending his band Pyrithion from the religious fans of As I Lay Dying who were concerned with the darker and more extreme bent his latest project was taking.

Grammy-nominated, Massachusetts-based hard rockers Killswitch Engage – singer Jesse Leach, guitarist Adam Dutkiewicz, bassist Mike D'Antonio, guitarist Joel Stroetzel and drummer Justin Foley - have announced the first headline tour in support of new album "Disarm the Descent," which debuted at #7 on the Billboard Top 200 and at #1 on the Hard Music Chart.

"Everyone in the Killswitch family is excited to get out on our first U.S. headlining tour in support of our new record," Leach said. "We are hitting some great cities and have a great mix of songs from every era of Killswitch as well as of course a handful of new ones."

Leach continued, "We look forward to sharing this tour with our old friends and brothers in metal As I Lay Dying. I personally have never had the chance to tour with them and I am looking forward to having such a quality band out with us to give this tour even more fire! We will also be joined by a talented and up-and-coming band Miss May I. Thanks to all the U.S. fans for your support! I See Stars Joining Asking Alexandria On Tour

I See Stars has been added to Asking Alexandria‘s “Monster Energy Outbreak Tour” with As I Lay Dying, Memphis May Fire and Attila. The North American trek kicks off November 16th. I See Stars will be performing on the bill in-between Memphis May Fire and Attila. Asking Alexandria guitarist Ben Bruce said the following of the situation:

"First and foremost I would like to talk about a dear friend of mine who was prematurely taken from us this month. Mitch Lucker was one of the kindest and most passionate people I have ever had the pleasure of calling my friend. My thoughts are not only with his family and friends, but also with the millions of people, worldwide, who Mitch helped to mould and inspire into the people they are today. A great man was lost who's love and passion reached all corners of the globe. As many of you know, Suicide Silence were preparing to join us on our upcoming 'Outbreak' Tour.

"Due to the devastating circumstances they will no longer be joining us physically. They will however, Mitch included, be with us in spirit. We will go out on this tour with As I Lay Dying, Memphis May Fire & Attila to pay our tributes and respects to Mitch and his brothers in Suicide Silence. A portion of all tickets and official tour t-shirts sold will go to Mitch's daughter for the Kenadee Lucker Education Fund.

"Suicide Silence could never be replaced on our tour as they are the only band in the world who could bring their element, intensity and power to the line-up. For the sake of giving the fans the best show we can under the circumstances, we have decided to add Sumerian family members I See Stars to the bill, NOT AS A REPLACEMENT BY ANY MEANS, but as another band who's love and passion for music and their fans is as tried and true as ours. Now, more than ever, we need to come together to celebrate our collective love of music and to show compassion & solidarity in our scene.

"It's time to put aside all petty differences and remember what it is that brings us all together, the music. Mitch - from myself and everyone else who will be taking part in this tour, you are forever in our hearts. This one's for you. We love you. Cheers." More...
