In early 2001, vocalist Tim Lambesis began writing music and lyrics for what would become As I Lay Dying. After meeting up with guitar player Evan White and drummer Jordan Mancino the group decided to move forward as a three piece. A month later they hit the studio to record “Beneath the Encasing of Ashes” released on Pluto Records in June 2001. Following its release, the band completed a number of tours. Through persistence and hard work “Beneath the Encasing of Ashes” became the top selling Pluto release.

Ready to move forward, As I Lay Dying recorded five songs for a split release with American Tragedy. The evolved follow up caught the attention of a number of people including various record labels. After a 70-day summer tour, the band came home to prepare for the things ahead. In March of 2003 As I Lay Dying signed with Metal Blade Records while recording a full length entitled “Frail Words Collapse.”

This 12-song release features dynamic improvements in both songwriting and musicianship. “Frail Words Collapse” (July 1, 2003) is full of brutal and emotionally driven songs that transition seamlessly from precise melodies to neck snapping rhythms.

With the rigorous tour schedule a new record demands, Tim Lambesis and Jordan Mancino decided to solidify the lineup. After touring with a number of fill ins, As I Lay Dying became complete with the addition of musicians Clinton Norris, Phil Sgrosso, and Nicholas Hipa.

As I Lay Dying Premiere New Single & Music Video

As I Lay Dying have officially entered a new era with the release of their comeback single, “Echoes.” The track arrives in the wake of yet another turbulent chapter for the Californian metalcore outfit — and particularly for their controversial frontman, Tim Lambesis.

This single arrives independently via the band, emerging a few weeks ahead of their live return, which will commence towards the end of this month in Moscow, Russia.

As I Lay Dying Premiere New Single

Amid recent controversy, As I Lay Dying’s eighth studio album, Through Storms Ahead, is set to release this Friday, November 15th. As a final preview, the band—currently comprised solely of frontman Tim Lambesis—has shared a new track "The Void Within," streaming via YouTube and Spotify for you now below.

The San Diego-based metalcore group recently faced a significant lineup change, with guitarist/vocalist Phil Sgrosso, guitarist Ken Susi, bassist/vocalist Ryan Neff, and drummer Nick Pierce all announcing their departures. Each former member hinted at underlying issues, with Susi cryptically stating, “…my personal morals have recently been tested to a breaking point,” and Sgrosso adding, “…recent actions have shown that As I Lay Dying no longer offers a healthy or safe environment for anyone involved.”

In response, Lambesis confirmed plans to rebuild the band with a new lineup but offered little further detail. This upheaval led to the cancellation of the band's fall European tour, though they are slated to perform at the Welcome To Rockville festival on May 16th in Daytona Beach, FL.

As I Lay Dying Down To One Member

Following the recent departures of bass player Ryan Neff, guitarist Ken Susi and drummer Nick Pierce, As I Lay Dying guitarist Phil Sgrosso has announced that he is also quitting, leaving vocalist Tim Lambesis as the only remaining member. The band's planned European tour has now been cancelled, though their album, "Through Storms Ahead" is still scheduled to be released through Century Media on November 15th. A statement from Sgrosso reads as follows:

"Thank you for your patience as I took time to gather my thoughts before speaking on the current state of As I Lay Dying.

"With recent events, including the departure of band members and the cancellation of our European tour ahead of a new album release, it’s clear we’re in a difficult and serious situation.

"Simply put, recent actions have shown that As I Lay Dying no longer offers a healthy or safe environment for anyone involved—whether creatively, personally, or professionally. After witnessing some concerning patterns of behavior, I’ve realized that I can no longer, in good conscience, enable further actions that could negatively affect anyone working within this space.

"For these reasons, I feel it’s in my best interest to completely distance myself, both creatively and personally, from As I Lay Dying. I also want to share my full support for Ryan, Ken, and Nick, who made the choice to step away recently. I’m grateful for our accomplishments and friendship over the past 3 years.

"With 21 years that I have dedicated to this band, it does not sit well with me to leave or abandon what I’ve considered to be my “life’s work.” I don’t feel that I, or others, should be forced out like so many have in the past.

"After all that’s been put into this, I believe that with the right adjustments and restructuring, our music can continue to thrive and explore new possibilities in a healthier environment. Over time, As I Lay Dying has been held back by dysfunction, and I feel that it’s no longer my responsibility to bear that burden.

"Thank you to everyone who has shown support for me and the music of As I Lay Dying. I’m looking forward to putting my energy and creativity into new, more positive ventures in the near future."

Three Members Of As I Lay Dying Quit

Last Friday, As I Lay Dying bassist Ryan Neff made the news by announcing his departure from the band, just weeks before the release of their new album, "Through Storms Ahead." Following the announcement, it was confirmed that tour manager Alex Kendrick "no longer works for" the band. Today, As I Lay Dying has been rocked by further departures, with guitarist Ken Susi first announcing his resignation with the following social media message.

""My time playing with As I Lay Dying has come to an end today. I leave with so much gratitude for everyone who followed and supported me from my days in Unearth to this era of my career. I jumped into the AILD camp with full knowledge of the heightened dramatic history but had a drive to just play great music with great friends.

"Unfortunately, my personal morals have recently been tested to a breaking point, and it's now the saddest ending to what could have been the greatest second chance for this band.

"Ryan Neff is receiving a lot of backlash for stepping down first, and I regret not sharing this decision sooner and standing confidently with my friend -- he's a flawless musician and an even better person.

"I'll miss you all on this stage, and I look forward to seeing you on the next one. Anyone looking for a guitar player? My resume is ready."

Also today, drummer Nick Pierce announced that he was also quitting, stating: More...

As I Lay Dying Releases "Whitewashed Tomb" Video

Grammy-nominated metalcore pioneers As I Lay Dying recently sparked a career-defining return to the scene, driven by the release of their upcoming eighth full-length studio album, "Through Storms Ahead," out November 15, 2024 via Napalm Records. Poised to be one of the most highly-anticipated metal comebacks in years, the audacious new album features the critically-acclaimed new tracks "Burden," "The Cave We Fear To Enter" and the recently revealed "We Are The Dead" featuring guest vocalists Alex Terrible (Slaughter to Prevail) and Tom Barber (Chelsea Grin, Darko),

Today, a fourth new single arrives - the ominous metalcore anthem "Whitewashed Tomb" - alongside a brand new music video. The track bleeds in with a cinematic underscore before its potent vocal lines, hair-raising, rhythmic guitar leads and reverberating electronic atmosphere takes over.

Frontman Tim Lambesis says about the track and video:
"'Whitewashed Tomb' represents a balance between the melody and aggression that AILD is known for with an interesting modern twist from the way that Phil and Hiram produced it. When Phil wrote the original demo, I could instantly appreciate the classic melodic-metal influences in the guitar melodies contrasted with an underlying darker theme. So, lyrically it seemed fitting for me to focus on the metaphor of a whitewashed tomb. It is something clean and beautiful at a first glance until the darker hidden side is revealed. I also love what Ryan Neff added to solidify that sense of contrast vocally, as well." More...

As I Lay Dying To Release New Album In November

With 25 years of reign and seven acclaimed albums under their belts, Grammy-nominated metalcore pioneers As I Lay Dying are back with an unmissable new album that will define their legacy for years to come. Poised to be one of the most highly-anticipated metal comebacks in years, the band’s eighth full-length studio album, "Through Storms Ahead," will drop on November 15, 2024 via Napalm Records. The album is available for pre-order now.

Featuring explosive new tracks "Burden" and "The Cave We Fear To Enter" - which arrived earlier this summer as the band's first new musical offerings in five years - "Through Storms Ahead" is an evolution of newly explored elements that further bolster the proven line-up of vocalist Tim Lambesis and guitarist Phil Sgrosso alongside recent newcomers Ryan Neff (bass, clean vocals), Nick Pierce (drums) and Ken Susi (guitar).

In celebration, As I Lay Dying just dropped the eviscerating new metalcore anthem of the year, "We Are The Dead." Featuring the gut-punching vocal talents of famed guest vocalists Alex Terrible (Slaughter To Prevail) and Tom Barber (Chelsea Grin, Darko), the latest album single arrives with an equally gripping new music video - proving equal parts mesmerizing, eerie and brutal. The video features appearances from both special guest vocalists.

Guitarist Phil Sgrosso offers about the track and video:
"'We Are The Dead' represents the more brutal territory from our new album, spotlighting our thrashier tendencies that we still enjoy mixing in amongst our more melodic sound. I think this is the meanest we've ever gone in terms of aggression, and who better to join us than two of deathcore's finest, Alex Terrible of Slaughter To Prevail and Tom Barber from Chelsea Grin. Shout out to our third-time video collaborator Tom Flynn for jumping in with us and pulling off another visually creative undertaking for the track." More...
