Kayo Dot Streaming "The Mortality Of Doves"

A new ambient and atmospheric Kayo Dot track titled "The Mortality of Doves” is now available online, which showcases a drastic change in direction on the bands' upcoming full-length "Coffins On Io."

Listen to the new track below. Kayo Dot’s evolution has been governed by an inscrutable inner logic. The accessible songwriting on “Coffins on Io” and the emphasis on vocal melody and electronic percussion makes the record’s darkness and intensity familiar and relatable.

Kayo Dot Releasing New Album

Led by founding member Toby Driver (also of Secret Chiefs 3), Kayo Dot emerged from Boston, MA in 2002 from the ashes of metal group Maudlin of the Well.

Since then, Driver has led Kayo Dot through several lineup changes and dramatic stylistic shifts: from traditional metal to atmospheric, avant-garde metal; and now with the new album "Coffins on Io," the bats-in-your-belfry hard rock of Sisters of Mercy meets Peter Gabriel-era Genesis, Scritti Politti, and early Roxy Music.

Stream the first track of "Coffins On Io," entitled "Library Subterranean," in the player below. Due out October 16th, pre-orders are now available at this location. More...

Hydra Head Records Closing Its Doors

Aaron Turner of Hydra Head Records has issued the following announcement about deciding to call it a day:

"Hydra Head Records has never been a smooth-running operation. We've spent the majority of our existence excitedly scrambling from one thing to the next, taking on more than we could ever possibly hope to achieve, and never quite finding solid footing in the midst of our self-induced whirlwind of chaos. Though not every second of doing this label has been enjoyable, it has been a very rewarding and meaningful project for me, and I hope for many of the other lives to which it has been directly connected. The fact that it has lasted close to two decades at this point is astonishing, and much has changed during that time - the lives of those directly involved with running the label, the bands and artists we've worked with, and the nature of the music industry itself. Though many of these changes have been positive, or at least illuminating, the impact of our history and current industry circumstances are culminating into a slow and somewhat painful death for the label. It certainly isn't an entirely unforeseen event, but we didn't think it would come quite so abruptly, or (perhaps naively) ever.

"The decision to pull the plug has not been an easy one, and in some ways is a not a choice at all. The simple fact of the matter is we've been running on empty for a while now and cannot afford to keep our doors open for much longer. Years of imbalance between creative ideals and financial realities, personal problems amongst the label operators, an unwillingness to compromise our aesthetic standards, a tendency towards releasing challenging (i.e. unmarketable) artists, and the steady decline of the music industry in general, are amongst the chief reasons for our inability to continue. It is a harsh but undeniable reality, and one which we are attempting to confront with as much integrity and grace as is afforded by the circumstances. More...

New Kayo Dot Song For Free Download

Kayo Dot has broken the mold for their new album, "Coyote," in which they nearly leave out the guitar. "Coyote" is due April 6 on Hydra Head.

The Village Voice describes the band's latest effort:
"Coyote is a 40-minute narrative composition that swirls with cooing violins, whining trumpets, jangling xylophones, and haunting blasts of cosmic debris--easily their most cohesive, heavy-hitting and best album yet. Influenced by early '80s goth and Herbie Hancock's more psychedelic excursions, Coyote is a mini-suite that's at once punishing, sad and gloriously free."

You can download "Whisper Ineffable" and read The Village Voice's interview with frontman Toby Driver here.

Here's the tracklist for "Coyote":

I. Calonyction Girl
II. Whisper Ineffable
III. Abyss Hinge 1: Sleeping Birds Sighing In Roscolux
IV. Abyss Hinge 2: The Shrinking Armature
V. Cartogram Out Of Phase

Kayo Dot Seeking Drummer and Keyboardist

KAYO DOT have posted the following update on their Myspace page:

“We’re looking for drummer and part-time keyboardist (for local shows) to play material from our upcoming record on Hydra Head! We probably won’t be performing any material from the first two albums."

"Drummers: Ideally, you should be very versatile/be able to play a variety of styles. A jazz background is strongly, strongly recommended. (This new album has a more jazzy feel and no metal this time!)"

"Keyboard players: we’re looking for analog synth players that also play a woodwind instrument! You must own and be able to play both these instruments, please! We actually already have a keyboardist in mind but he lives out of state. We’re looking for someone who might want to fill in for him for local/east coast shows once in a while, etc."

"You must live in the NYC area!"

"If this sounds like you and you’d like to play with us, please get in contact asap!”
