Guitarist/vocalist Mike Scheidt of YOB will be releasing a solo album on June 12th via Thrill Jockey records. He's been busy with two YOB tours this year, but still found the energy to create a personal release. Titled "Stay Awake," the album was produced by Sub Pop grunge legend (and Mike's personal friend) Tad Doyle over at his Witch Ape Studios in Seattle. The cover art, featured below, was done by Stevie Floyd - who also did the most recent YOB album "Atma." Mike says that this acoustic album will be dramatically different from YOB in a spacious and intense way.

American doom metal act YOB has posted the following update online, detailing its forthcoming new album as well as a new tour.
"This album is very aggressive. Certainly it has all of the elements of our other albums, but it propels and pummels in ways that are unique in our catalogue. We are very excited to share this new music with our friends worldwide.
"Yob has received many request over the years to tour again. This year, we will do exactly that. After we are done recording, we will begin rehearsing for a full U.S. tour beginning the first week of July, followed by a full European tour in September.
"We are thrilled to announce that our labelmates Dark Castle will be accompanying Yob on all of the dates both in the U.S. and in Europe, with Rob Shaffer of Dark Castle laying down drums for Yob on both tours.
"It is going to be a great year for us, and we can't wait to see you on the road! DOOM!!!"
On the second day of SXSW Music, there were more options for metal shows at night. I enjoyed bouncing around between shows on the first day and hoped to catch a few bands at different shows this evening, such as Christian Mistress, Agalloch, and the Alex Skolnick Trio. It didn’t pan out exactly as planned, but was a good night nonetheless.
As I wandered a few alleyways, looking for a few of the more obscure venues where these bands were playing, I stumbled upon the Barbarella Patio first, which is where Agalloch would be playing later that night. Upon entry, Amber Asylum was playing and I literally went back to the gate to double check the lineup posted there. They were so mellow that I thought I was in the wrong place. The band did have a couple of slightly heavier moments toward the end of their set, but overall they were far too mellow for my tastes. More...
After my struggles to stay awake the previous night, I slept in late so I wouldn’t be exhausted for the rest of SXSW.
I made it out to an afternoon session “Website? Get Real. You Need A Web Empire.” It was a decent talk about not only the band’s website as a central hub, but all of the social media and mobile presence that bands should work on to build their audience. There were some tips given on marketing and SEO and various related topics as well, but overall, I felt the title was a little misleading. They discussed some services such as cashmusic, bandcamp, and Topspin as well. It was an ok discussion overall, but I only learned a few tidbits here and there that I didn’t know already.
From there, I was headed over to Emo’s once again. On the way, I ran into San Francisco violin, cello and drums trio Judgement Day playing acoustically at a street corner. I stopped to shoot a few photos and hear a song, bought a CD and then was on my way. I hoped to catch them amped the following night at a proper show. More...

Doom metallers YOB have posted the following update online, in which it announces its decision to cancel the forthcoming European tour and Roadburn festival appearance:
"We regretfully must announce that YOB cannot appear at the Roadburn festival in April 2011. We are heartbroken to not be in attendance. Roadburn 2010 was and is one of the highlight experiences of our lives, as a band and individually as people. We do intend to come to Europe sometime in 2011 and hope to be invited to Roadburn 2012. Until then we want to thank Walter, Jurgen, and everyone who makes this incredible event possible. We also wish to apologize to anyone who wanted to see YOB there this year. We promise you we will be back."
Enslaved has been announced as artists in residence for Roadburn Festival 2010, which will take place April 15-18 in Tilburg, Holland. Enslaved will be playing the Thursday.
Roadburn states: "We are thrilled to announce that Norway’s Enslaved will be our artists in residence for next years Roadburn Festival, set to be held from April 15 – 18, 2010 at both the 013 venue and Midi Theatre in Tilburg – Holland. Enslaved have been groundbreaking metal pioneers for almost 20 years. Since their Viking-metal inception, the band has been forging a connection between black metal and prog, arriving at an incredible melange of heavy psych and modern metal. Enslaved embodies the experimental, dark and psychedelic aspect of Roadburn, and we have invited them as our artists in residence – a premiere for Roadburn - for our 2010 festival. Enslaved, and various band members, will be doing several special shows during the festival.
Guitarist Ivar Bjørnson comments: “This show will pan towards the latter day Enslaved and will consist of a set list specially put together for Roadburn; emphasizing the heavy, the psychedelic and not but least – the visual aspect of what Enslaved is today. Be prepared for a surprise or two!”
Enslaved / Shining (NO) will be the main headliner of Roadburn Festival 2010, playing their 90-minute Armageddon Concerto on Saturday, April 17th. Composed by Enslaved’s Ivar Bjørnson and Shining’s Jørgen Munkeby and arranged together with the band members, Bjørnson describes the Armageddon Concerto as “an experience of a life time. Prog, doom, jazz, extreme metal, northern mythology, science fiction –this is going to be massive.”
The festival also features Dream of an Opium Eater, Trinacria, Mouth of the Architect, YOB, Triptykon, Altar of Plagues and many others. For more information, visit www.roadburn.com.
Reunited doom metal giants YOB will be making their European live debut with two different shows at next year's Roadburn Festival, set to be held from April 15 - 18 at both the 013 venue & Midi Theatre, Tilburg - Holland.
Roadburn will celebrate YOB's return to the fold by offering the band the opportunity to play different shows at both the 013 venue, and the Midi Theatre during the festival.
Mike Scheidt comments: "YOB is quite thrilled to announce our first European trip to play the most excellent Roadburn festival in 2010. We have wanted to come over to Europe to play for many years and to have our first show be at Roadburn is beyond incredible for us. We are looking forward to sharing in the atmosphere of the fest with all of the excellent bands and fans that will be in attendance. April will not get here soon enough! DOOM!!!"
