Formed in 1997 by long time friends guitarist Jason Mendonca and drummer/song writer David Gray, Akercocke was a continuation of their former project, Salem Orchid. After some searching, they found Paul Scanlan and Peter Theobalds to round out the line up, and Akercocke was officially born.

The band worked on "creating" their sound and writing material for 1997, and spent most of 1998 touring and developing a fan base. In early 1999 they decided to release their first record, Rape of the Bastard Nazarene on their Goat of Mendes record label.

Critical acclaim followed, and Peaceville Records signed the band in 2000, with Goat of Mendes coming out in 2001. Known for taking the stage in suits, Akercocke has created a niche in the scene, and looks to bring satanic metal to new heights.
