Biohazard & Life Of Agony Bring Brooklyn To London
It's quite amazing how far a reputation can travel. Through music, movies, sportsmen and more, the borough of Brooklyn, New York is known all across the world. From the Beastie Boys to Mike Tyson, so many people have helped give the area the fame, and to an extent notoriety that it maintains today. Of course, there's no shortage of heavy music in Brooklyn, and at long last, two of Brooklyn's most revered names teamed up to bring their punishing sounds to Europe, beginning in the British Isles. On March 4th, Biohazard and Life Of Agony arrived in London, enticing everyone in the British capital with Knicks and Jets merchandise out to the show to hear the concrete audio both groups are known for.
The Kentish Town Forum, a personal favourite when it comes to venues in The Smoke, opened at six in the evening but it would be nearly an hour before attendees would get to witness the opening band of the night, LYLVC (pronounced, "lilac") from North Carolina. I must admit to some hesitation because I can't stand it when bands spell their name in capitals or use Vs and Ys when it's not needed, but it's not fair to judge a band on this kind of thing. The venue was still a long way from being full and when greeted with TV screens, complete with sci-fi intro video, the crowd clearly didn't know what to make of it.
To be honest, this attitude barely changed throughout the set, which was a shame because LYLVC has a ton of energy and was clearly excited to be performing in London. Their mix of rock, rap and electronic music comes together to create an uplifting sound and vocalist Alyse Zavala was a particular highlight, though I did enjoy watching keyboardist Cam Gillette, because I was convinced that at any moment his gear was about to fall over. Ultimately, LYLVC far exceeded my expectations, but the lack of reaction from the audience led me to believe that this was the wrong tour for them. They'd fit in better with modern nu metal bands like Blind Channel or Project Renegade, or even supporting veterans of that sub-genre. An intriguing, if miscast opener. More...

Life Of Agony Cancels Remaining Tour Dates
New York alternative metal/hardcore veterans Life Of Agony has announced that they have decided to cancel the remainder of their tour dates across the North East United States, after vocalist Mina Caputo and drummer Veronica Bellino tested positive for the COVID-19 virus. A statement from the band reads as follows:
"We have unfortunate news to share: Both Mina and Veronica have tested positive for COVID and sadly we must cancel the rest of the Northeast run. We are terribly sorry. These are crazy times and we're all doing our best to navigate through it together. To all our fans, we plan to make up the shows as soon as we can.
"We'd especially like to thank Dog Eat Dog, Kings Never Die, the opening bands, the venues, promoters, and all of the crew for everything."
Life Of Agony To Release Documentary Film
While the worldwide pandemic pretty much wiped out the music industry over the past year with its large gathering restrictions, Brooklyn, NY’s Life of Agony have been using their downtime to put the finishing touches on their upcoming full-length documentary "The Sound of Scars." You can watch the trailer below.
The project began two years ago by UK-based director Leigh Brooks and was filmed across several countries while Life of Agony were on and off the road. "This isn't a typical music documentary. It’s as personal as it gets." explains Brooks. "I first saw the band live at the London Astoria in 1996. Since then, LOA has become an absolute go-to when I felt alone and insecure about myself. This film is an intimate portrait that sheds light on the real life stories that makes their music so vital and relevant."
The Sound of Scars utilises personal archive footage, rare photographs and lost interviews, along with new, never-before-seen conversations with the band and their family members that tells the story of how three friends overcame domestic violence, substance abuse and depression to form one of the most influential bands in its genre. Through the success of their groundbreaking 1993 debut River Runs Red, hailed by Rolling Stone as "One of the Greatest Metal Albums of All Time," they channelled their cumulative life stories into a soundtrack for a broken generation. At the time, that newfound fame allowed them to escape the tragedies of their pasts, but in the wake of their accomplishments, unforeseen obstacles arose. "We've completely ripped our deepest selves open for this film," says guitarist Joey Zampella "The audience and our fan base will completely understand the mold we were broken from, and what this journey means to us." Diamond Oz: My Top Five Albums Of 2019
Another year, another welcome barrage of metal albums. After some absolute belters last year from the likes of Judas Priest, Mantar and Primordial, 2019 had a lot to live up to. Fortunately, there were plenty of legends, established artists and fresh faces with new material on offer this year. OK. Obligatory intro out of the way, let's get on with why you'll tell me how wrong I am on Twitter this year...
Best Live Band
Just like last year, I've been a very lucky boy this year in terms of how many bands I've seen. A great live band, in my opinion, is one which can cut it in a large venue as well as a smaller place. Some notable performances this year came from the Graspop Metal Meeting festival in Belgium, where Candlemass, Slayer, Orange Goblin and Discharge, to name but a few, treated fans to unforgettable shows. In fact, I very nearly gave this year's award to Discharge, since they attracted a big number to see them at Graspop, but I've also seen them perform just as sharply in venues the size of bedrooms. However, this year the award goes to...
King Diamond
Anyone who's familiar with the man won't be surprised by this, but finally seeing King Diamond live was a dream come true. Anyone who can get a crowd to go crazy, without playing a note, without saying a word, without even moving, is a born performer. Currently blowing audiences minds in North America, the Danish metal icon opened his set simply by sitting in a chair, before the lights go up and the audiences can be hold the two floor set promoting his new album, "The Institute." The man is sixty three years old and still in phenomenal voice, treating fans to classics and album cuts, King Diamond puts the likes of Alice Cooper and Kiss to shame with his theatrics too. He's still a bucket list artist for many people and I strongly urge everyone to see the King as soon as they can. More...

Life Of Agony Airs The Sound Of Scars In London
Alternative metal is a tag that's been given to some of the best bands to arise from the nineties. From Living Colour to Faith No More and everything in between, this loose tag has been placed on groups which may not sound like the archetypal metal band, but bring it just as hard. One such band to be classed as such is Brooklyn's own Life Of Agony, who released three stellar albums in their initial run, before returning with a new album, "Broken Valley" in 2005. Now in their third stage, the new album, "The Sound Of Scars" proves that the band are as good as, if not better than they ever were. Of course, any album release means shows and I was fortunate enough to be in London for the opening night of the trek.
Opening the night was Doyle, the eponymous band of Misfits guitarist Doyle von Frankenstein. If truth be told, I've never been a Misfits fan, but I'm always willing to check out a band in a live setting. I'm glad I did, because Doyle and his crew have put together some really cool songs, bridging the horror punk background with metal to create something interesting. The first thing that catches one's eye when they take to the stage is Doyle himself, who is still in immaculate shape and has his stage get up perfect. The man himself is joined by some top quality musicians too, particularly drummer Wade Murff who was an absolute beast behind the kit, while bassist Brandon Strate kept the ship steady throughout. Life Of Agony Posts New Music Video Online
On October 12th 1993, Life of Agony’s iconic debut "River Runs Red" was released. Hailed by Rolling Stone as “one of the greatest metal records of all time”, "River Runs Red" was an emotional concept album that focused on a troubled teenager’s inability to cope with what seemed to be the worst week of his life. The album connected to a broken generation in a visceral way through its cathartic message and hard-hitting approach, and the band developed a cult-following in the process.
Twenty-six years later, practically to the day, Life of Agony will continue the story of "River Runs Red" with "The Sound Of Scars," acting as a “chapter two” to their groundbreaking album. On October 11th 2019, the band comes full-circle and picks up exactly where their debut left off, revealing just what happened to the troubled boy through intense audio scenes.
"The Sound Of Scars" is available in the following formats:
CD Jewel Case
* Digital Album
* 1LP Gatefold Black
* 1LP Gatefold Gold
* 1LP Gatefold BloodRed
* CD + Shirt Bundle
* 1LP + Shirt Bundle
* Deluxe Box
"By far, this is the best Life of Agony record you’ve heard in years,” explains guitarist Joey Z. "We really went back to our roots on this one and tapped into the mindset we had when we first started the band."
The group recently toured Europe where they filmed a chaotic, high-energy video for lead-off track "Scars" with director Leigh Brooks of Firebelly Films. "We decided to perform right in the middle of the pit to capture what it’s really like to be at a Life Of Agony show,” said bassist Alan Robert. “It was a sweaty whirlwind of raw emotion and non-stop energy... something I’ll never forget. And to drive home the message of the song even further, we decided to include a handful of fan-submitted LOA tattoo images in there, too. Literally hundreds of them have been pouring in from fans all over the world and they looked so incredible, we had to use them. It just goes to show how deeply connected we all are through this music, both on an emotional and on a personal level."
Life of Agony will embark on the S.O.S. World Tour beginning in England this October with Doyle (of the Misfits fame) and Evolution Empire supporting. More...
