Assassin Streams "Back From The Dead"
It's a phenomenon that we occasionally come across in life: sometimes you have to take one step back to be able to take two steps forward. "Combat Cathedral," the latest album release by Düsseldorf speed thrash metal act Assassin, takes two steps forward. It presents a band that is not only highly motivated, bringing to bear all the tried and tested fortes and pushing the pedal to the metal as ever, but that also has the courage to evolve.
Today the first song from the album has come online. Check out "Back From The Dead" in the player below. On the song, guitarist Jürgen "Scholli" Scholz commented: "'Back From The Dead' is the opener of the new Assassin studio album 'Combat Cathedral' and it hits you right in the face. It shows that Assassin is really back, stronger than ever with our new singer.
The twelve songs were recorded at the Nemesis Studios in Essen with the support of experienced sound engineer Marc Görtz, guitarist and main songwriter with German metal core legend Caliban.
Scholz comments: "Marc made sure that the typically earthy and consciously slightly old-school Assassin sound is ever-present on 'Combat Cathedral,' enhancing it with a contemporary phat production. A perfect symbiosis!" More...
Ex-Assassin Front Man Forms Raging Rob

Assassin Gearing Up To Release DVD
Assassin will release the band's first DVD "Chaos and Live Shots" this coming January 29th via Steamhammer/SPV. The band also issued the following press release:
"Blood and gore all over the place, smelly feet in a car with closed windows, and as if that wasn't enough, there are roadies crawling through grotty attics, interspersed with wild parties, plenty of drugs and tons of alcoholic beverages - somehow you can't make up your mind which of these countless choleric excesses of a wonderfully and thoroughly uncivilised cohabitation you'd most like to have been a part of.
"Thrash metal act Assassin were there all the way, which is why they will probably be the last survivors of the human race when Planet Earth plunges - as predicted - into the abyss this coming winter. Mind you: should Armageddon really materialise, they at least had a good time. Where? In Frankfurt and Hagen, in Lichtenfels and Bochum, in Hamburg, Berlin, Munich, but also ... wait for it! ... in Osaka (!). March 2010 saw eight cameras witness Assassin conquer that Japanese city, pulling out all the stops at the True Thrash Fest.
"Not only were Assassin's two shows caught on camera, but also the every-day madness this chaos squad lives with. So should the world not come to an end after all, you will be able to watch all this and much more on double DVD, out January 29th in North America on Steamhammer/SPV. Chaos and Live Shots is the title of that footage (which is anything but confidential), presenting a thoroughly anarchistic band.
"Well how about this one: why is guitarist Michael Hoffmann pulled across the poker table like that? Or: why does drummer Björn Sondermann smash up his ... hmm ... well-kept Honda van? Why do the phones of the other band members ring all the time so they can't ever seem to get down to some serious meditation? And why does this damn mobile have to ring when they'd much rather cheer on their favourite football team, Fortuna Düsseldorf, at the stadium? More...

Sunday Old School: Assassin
German thrash metal is widely hailed as the only international thrash scene that could rival their American counterparts. However, when discussing German thrash, the names Kreator, Destruction and Sodom are the three that are always brought up first. There’s a good reason for this, all three bands were and are outstanding, but if one were to dig deeper then a treasure chest of thrash can easily be uncovered. One of the best examples of hidden German gems, would be the Dusseldorf based, Assassin. The group was formed in 1984 and released a demo shortly afterwards which quickly sold out all five hundred copies. After releasing a second demo entitled, "Nemesis," the band was able to secure a record deal with German label, SPV. The signing allowed them to release their first full length album, "Upcoming Terror," which sold around 15,000 copies.
After recruiting some new members, the band released their second album, "Interstellar Experience" in 1988. The album was widely praised by thrash metal fans and earned the band a supporting slot on Death Angel’s first European tour, which was also a success. The group began working on their third studio album after the tour finished but disaster struck when all of their equipment was stolen by burglars. Not having the money to replace the gear, the group decided to call it a day, leaving work on the album unfinished.
Like many thrash bands however, a reunion was inevitable, an in 2002, Assassin decided to regroup and were quickly offered a spot on the 2003 edition of the famous, Wacken Open Air festival. The performance was critically acclaimed and the band experienced a small but noticeable resurgence in popularity. To celebrate this, a third Assassin album named, "The Club" was finally released in 2005, much to the delight of longtime fans. Although the group have been keeping fairly quiet since then, they recently announced that they have re-signed with SPV, and will be releasing a brand new album in 2011, aptly entitled, "Breaking The Silence."
