On Monday, January 17th, Swedish black metal act Watain took home the "Best Hard Rock" award for the "Lawless Darkness" album at Sweden's annual Grammis ceremony (the Swedish equivalent to the U.S. Grammy Awards).
Comments front man Erik Danielsson: "I always pictured the criteria for entering the Grammy awards to be those of mainstream music in general; conformity, insipidity and commercial potential. In other words, I was quite surprised when we even got nominated. But considering all the blood, sweat and tears we have put into this, our life's mission, during the past 13 years, it is by all means an award well deserved. And no matter what the parameters were by which the jury made their decision, the Devil won again!
"Even if this music genre will always be one with adversity and wild hearted insanity as it's very roots," he continues, "the artistic value must be acknowledged not only on an underground level but in any cultural circumstance, high or low. Acknowledged I say, not necessarily appreciated. And in a country like Sweden it is about fucking time, for here it has been neglected and stupefied by the mass media for years, while legends such as Dissection and Bathory have been writing and releasing some of the most monumental albums in music history. The Grammy that we have won with Watain is a step towards rectification in that matter, and a sign that the artistry and infernal creativity that permeates Watain and this genre is being taken seriously. For that we are proud and delighted in accepting the award. As for it's market-value or importance in a "music industry context," we sincerely could not care less."
The "Lawless Darkness" album was released via Season Of Mist on June 7th and was recorded at Necromorbus Studio (Deathspell Omega, Funeral Mist, Ondskapt et al) in Alvik, Sweden.

Swedish black metal legion Watain has issued the following tour recap and end-of-year update:
"North and South America have now been left in ashes, and with that the Lawless Darkness Tour 2010 is over. Hail to those who made it possible, and those who made it even more triumphant. North: Watain Disciples USA, Goatwhore, Black Anvil, Decibel Magazine, Liz and Dave at Earsplit, Jimmy and the Duff's crew, Josh at Dean Guitars, Engl Amps, Black Witchery, Negative Plane, Averse Sefira, Hod. South: Arma Productions, Hells Angels Antofagasta, Careloco and The Chilean Watain Militia, Kythrone, the mighty Mortuary Drape, the Tumba crew, and all those whose presence strengthened us along the long and winding road through hell and back. You know who you are. A special mention to S.L of The Devil's Blood who took on the lead guitar duties in North America; hail brother! Finally, a thunderous salute to our iron crew, without whom none of this would have been possible.

Although it was cold out, not everyone wanted to go in. Rumors of the worst smell imaginable emanating from wherever Watain plays kept many people at bay. But The Bar was still full to the brim with fans of black metal and those wanting to see if this tour was really as creepy as people said. Let me say this, the next time Watain comes, I don’t think everyone from this show will come back. The scary show filled with meat, blood, fire, and extreme music might just be too much for them. This will mark WATAIN's first time touring North America as a five-piece. Commented vocalist E, "Getting the whole band into the U.S. has always been a somewhat problematic issue, due to criminal records and related nonsense. This time we've at least managed to get five people in, although we had to find a temporary replacement for our brother Set, who is still denied entrance into the 'Land of the Free.' Instead we've invited SL from The Devil's Blood to handle the second guitar on this tour. The past month in Europe has nourished the fires of our Temple indeed, and it is with increased power and victory in our hearts that we leave the European shores in flames and set our sails towards the west. Beware..."
Added Set on being denied Stateside entry, "It is with great disappointment -- but with little surprise -- that I am once again denied entry into the States. That's one of the small prices to pay being a sworn enemy of their world. It feels wrong to not be able to join this tour, even more so after just returning from the most intense five weeks of our Reaping Death tour with Destroyer 666. On the other hand, I honestly couldn't ask for a better replacement in this (or any other) situation than SL, whose talent and vision within the sinister musical Craft is undeniable. America, I'll see you soon enough...FTW!" More...
Otargos has checked in with the following recap of the band's recent "Reaping Death" tour with Watain and Destroyer 666:
"The Reaping Death tour with Watain and Destroyer 666 is now over. Let me tell you my friends that it was a fucking huge experience! The bands, the crew and of course the crowd were fucking incredible. It was a month full of blood, whiskey and decibel through 16 countries...
"We couldn't have expected something better for us. Otargos music has never been so massive on stage since this tour and we are really excited about hitting the European roads again in the future! Thanks to all our fans and new ones who supported us along this tour. Be sure that it's only our first attack and prepare yourself for a fucking WAR next time!"
