The Big Hair Bash for Cats, organized by Mary Bielich (Mythic, Derketa, November's Doom) will use the power of heavy metal to save kitties through charity. A number of local bands in the Pittsburgh area (and one L.A. band) have agreed to donate their time, and any profits, to local charities that benefit homeless cats. They're going to be performing songs from their favorite 1980's hair metal bands. The Big Hair Bash will take place on Saturday, May 12th, at the 31st Street Pub in Pittsburgh, PA. Mary will post updates and any other bands confirming for the event on Facebook.

Microwaves are currently writing material for a new full length to follow up 2006's blistering no-wave thrash attack Contagion Heuristic. So far, the band has about 9 new songs completed. In the meantime, Microwaves are playing a handful of shows in the Pittsburgh region in September and October, the dates for which you can check out on our TOURS page. Microwaves are also looking for a show somewhere east of Pittsburgh for Saturday, October 20th...if yer interesting in having them play your town, hit up John Roman from Microwaves at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Crucial Blast Records has announced the addition of two bands to their roster, Microwaves and Black Elk.
Pittsburgh's Microwaves features drummer John Roman (ex-1985), guitarist/vocalist David Kuzy, and bassist Adam MacGregor (ex-Creation Is Crucifixion). Here's a description from the label: "In the anti-tradition of whitebread Bay Area thrash metal, the violent morass of New York no wave, and a familiarity with Ralph Records insanity, Microwaves draws from a palette that is somehow as wide as it seems limited. " The band's new album, "Contagion Heuristic," will hit streets in November through Crucial Blast. You can check out some of their material online here.
Meanwhile, Portland, OR outfit Black Elk plays a "creeped out conglom of carnivorous charred hardcore punk, the sludgy power of primo Pacific Northwest tarpit rawk (think Karp, Melvins, and early Soundgarden as reference points), twitchy Midwestern noise rage somewhere between Am Rep Records (circa-1991) and a more rabid Die Kreuzen, and a goatheaded psychedelic backwoods black mass/dance party risen to a freakin' fever pitch." Black Elk's new ten-song album was produced at Smegma Studios by Mike Lastra and will hit stores on November 7th. You can check them out here.
