2015 marked the ten-year anniversary of Austin’s favorite variety festival, Fun Fun Fun Fest. As with past years the festival hosted multiple color-coded stages of genres including rap, indie rock, electronic and comedy. Also, skate ramps and a wrestling ring were on hand. Games were placed throughout Auditorium Shores park to maximize the element of fun. This being Metalunderground.com, though, these following reports will focus on the Black Stage where punk and metal took place.
The forecast called for rain on the first day so many of the attendees were dressed for the weather. Fortunately, it only drizzled. Nothing was the first band I took in on the Black Stage. The Philly-based act released “Guilty of Everything” in 2014 via Relapse Records. They had a nineties alternative sound that fit well with many of the artists at FFF this year. Their guitar sound was noisy, too, which they’ve been branded as a noise rock outfit (another 90s-ism). They sounded good but didn’t do much to keep my interest. More...
CreativeLive Music & Audio has announced its next live streaming audio production workshop, "Fix it in the Mix," to be hosted by Converge guitarist and Godcity Studios founder Kurt Ballou on November 24 from 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. PST / 12:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. EST.
"Fix it in the Mix" will explore organic approaches to recovering and enhancing the natural tones from original performances without replacing drums with samples and re-amping guitars. Ballou will demonstrate how to think outside of the box to come up with creative solutions to audio restoration problems every engineer has faced. For more information and to enroll for "Fix it in the Mix" for free today, head over to this location.
"Obviously sample replacement of drums and re-amping of guitars can be effective ways to revive sub-par recordings, but they can also homogenize the uniqueness of the original tracks," commented Ballou. "In this class, I'll explore organic approaches to turn your tracks from trashy to classy."
Upcoming instructor, Kurt Ballou, is the brains behind Boston's Godcity Studios. One of the most prolific producers in metal/hardcore/punk, he's worked with a laundry list of bands including everyone from Champion and Have Heart to Kvelertak, Cave In, and Nails. More...

The fourth installment of the Decibel Magazine Tour will feature Swedish melodeath legends At The Gates joining forces with U.S. hardcore heroes Converge and U.K. death/doom supergroup Vallenfyre, with yet one more very special opener to be announced this December.
"Super-stoked at finally getting to be part of the Decibel tour!" enthuses At The Gates front man Tomas Lindberg. "A great mag, with great people behind it! And finally being able to rip out new stuff in front of a U.S. club audience? Sweet! The bill looks amazing, too! The most relevant hardcore band on the planet and the fiercest old-school death metal band on the same night as us? Excited!"
"We are excited to be part of this fantastic and diverse tour," says Converge front man Jacob Bannon, who designed the tour logo and art. "For me, At The Gates are one of the most important bands in contemporary heavy music. It will be an honor to tour the country with them."
"This will be Vallevnfyre's first U.S. tour, and what a tour," beams frontman Gregor Mackintosh. "I think this is the most diverse and exciting bill of any metal tour I have seen this year. Great to be a part of it. We will be injecting some British filth into your unsuspecting American ears. Cheers." More...
Converge is proud to release the video for "Precipice / All We Love We Leave Behind." directed by Craig Murray (Converge, Oxbow, Narrows).
Check it out below, courtesy of Pitchfork.com. Both tracks appear on Converge's 2012 full-length, "All We Love We Leave Behind."
The video was conceptualized by Murray, using the narrative put forth of the death of a canine companion as told in J. Bannon’s lyrical writings. Murray uses powerful visual metaphor and imagery to communicate the crushing weight of loss and the strength of unconditional love the song explores.
To coincide with this release, Converge is offering an apparel design featuring visuals from the video. The design is available through the Converge online store. 100% of the proceeds from this design will go to the Northeast Animal Shelter in Salem, Massachusetts. More...

In “Rungs in a Ladder,” which premiered last week on Vice's music site Noisey, Bannon reflects on life, art, and purpose. The documentary is shot as a continuous thought that sprawls in multiple directions but focuses ultimately on purpose.
Directed by Ian McFarland, "Rungs in the Ladder" is the latest in an ongoing series of documentaries by McFarland and Pecci profiling people carving a meaningful existence for themselves on the fringes of society. Check out the video below. More...
Even though Fun Fun Fun Fest 2012 happened just a couple of miles from my apartment, it felt like an epic, festival journey. It was akin to driving from Texas to Maryland for the Maryland Death Fest. The road trip I took to a festival was in 2001 to the defunct Milwaukee Metal Fest. That trip was a mere 7-8 hours in the car from Michigan. Making it to Fun Fun Fun Fest meant 24 hours in the car, from Michigan to Texas. Unlike any other festival trip, though, I could sleep in my own bed after a long day of music and festivities.
4:30 AM November 2nd—I hit the highway outside Sikeston, Missouri, made it to Georgetown, Texas round 3:30 PM and immediately left for Austin. The highway reminded me of those nature programs depicting army ants traveling head to butt in a single file line through the forest. The festival surely added to Friday’s gridlock. I anxiously pushed on, trying to make it home in time to catch the best day of the fest for metal. Napalm Death, Municipal Waste, Burning Love, Converge and Tomahawk comprised this lineup. Despite my diligence, I would miss all of these acts.
Having arrived at the festival around 7 PM, I figured I missed the day’s metal acts, and would look towards Run DMC’s performance. My coverage was even further delayed by mistakes in issuing press credentials. While waiting for my photo pass, droning notes emanated from the Yellow Stage. Normally this stage features comedians, but after 5 PM, bands took the stage. I asked a staff member who was playing and he said Super Chunk. More...

"Converge brought us out for our first-ever European tour two years ago, so it's a great honor for us that they now are taking us out on our first proper U.S. tour! Not to mention the other bands, that line-up is ridiculous. Needless to say, we're beyond excited!"
The band also announced via Twitter that recording has begun for a new album, stating "First day at Godcity with Kurt Ballou. All I can say is, this album is going to fuck the first album in the ass. Hard."

Converge will release new studio album, "All We Love We Leave Behind," on October 9th, along with a deluxe package that includes a 48 page full-color hardcover, clothbound book with original art created by front-man Jacob Bannon via Epitaph (vinyl on Deathwish).
Accompanying the track "Aimless Arrow” is a new video directed by filmmaker Max Moore (Whips/Chains, Code Orange Kids, etc) that visually expands on the heavy emotional lyrical content that the song carries. The new single can be heard in the player below or over at Pitchfork.com by going here. The following press release was also issued about the album:
"For the first time in years, All We Love We Leave Behind is an album that contains no special guests or outside collaborators and every aspect of the music, production and aesthetics of the album was handled by Converge in order to give listeners an unfiltered glimpse into the creative vision of these Boston-based innovators.
"Recorded and mixed by guitarist Kurt Ballou at his renowned Godcity Studios in Salem, Massachusetts, All We Love We Leave Behind is a no-frills Converge album that sees the band—which also features vocalist Jacob Bannon, bassist Nate Newton and drummer Ben Koller—eschewing fancy production techniques in order to create seventeen songs that work as a cohesive whole yet can also stand on their own."
"There's no artificial distortion, triggers, or Auto-Tune on this album," Ballou explains, "it's all organic, it’s real sounds that capture the way the band performs live."
"I think we really stepped up our game on this record. The most important thing to this band is that with every album we want to create something that excites us and moves us in some way," explains Bannon. "There are a lot of subtle nuances on this record are really special to us and we definitely hit those individually on this record."
"It's always been important for us to have a lot of dynamics in our music because no one wants to listen to a million miles an hour all the time," Bannon responds when asked about the melodic mid-tempo groove of a song like "Coral Blue." More...

Converge and Napalm Death have come together for a split release, bridging the worlds of personal and politically driven extreme music. A teaser for the split can be heard below, and the following press release was also issued:
"Recorded as part of the band's new album sessions, Converge offer up the blazing new song 'No Light Escapes.' Already a staple of their live set, this whirlwind of an emotional charged song is a soon to be a discordant hardcore/metal anthem for the band. Also on the release, Converge offer a 'We Are The World' styled rendition of the influential Entombed classic 'Wolverine Blues.' Joining them in tribute is a number of friends including Tomas Lindberg (Disfear, At The Gates, Lock Up), Aaron Turner (Isis, Old Man Gloom, Split Cranium), Kevin Baker (APMD, The Hope Conspiracy), Brian Izzi (Trap Them), and more. A new Converge album will surface later in 2012 on Epitaph/Deathwish.
"On the flip side, metal pioneers Napalm Death offer up two new aural monsters. First, 'Will By Mouth' erupts in classic grind fashion. A buzz of brutal guitars and a crushing blast beat lay a foundation for Barney Greenway's vicious vocal attack. All of it uniquely bleeding together to paint a vivid picture of social unrest. Also on the release, Napalm Death offer the slower and textural new song 'No Impediment To Triumph (Bhopal).' A deeply resonant number that lyrically sheds light on the horrific Bhopal Gas Tragedy of 1984. Without question, 'No Impediment…' is truly a powerful and poignant moment for this legendary band."
Pre-orders are now available through Deathwish, and the track listing is as follows:
1. No Light Escapes - Converge
2. Wolverine Blues - Converge
3. Will By Mouth - Napalm Death
4. No Impediment To Triumph (Bophal) - Napalm Death More...
