Below is our complete Death news coverage, including columns and articles pertaining to the band. Some articles listed may be indirectly related, such as side projects of the band members, etc.

NEVERMORE frontman Warrel Dane has tapped James Murphy (ex-TESTAMENT, DEATH, OBITUARY) and Jeff Loomis (NEVERMORE) to play guest solos on his upcoming solo album, which is tentatively due in early 2008. Dane has written about eight tracks with former SOILWORK guitarist-turned-producer Peter Wichers and has also collaborated with ex-HIMSA guitarist Matt Wicklund on a few songs. Songtitles set to appear on the CD include "August", "Obey" (described by Dane as "one of my favorite songs that Peter has penned — very heavy and Dirk's [SOILWORK's Dirk Verbeuren] drumming is amazing on this track") and "Messenger". Also included will be a "very metalized cover" of an old SISTERS OF MERCY song.
In a September 2006 interview with Metal-Rules.com, Dane stated about the upcoming solo CD, "I've been working on it for like the last year off and on, just writing songs with Peter Wichers, and at some point we'll finish them then go in the studio . . . It doesn't sound like NEVERMORE, and I think, you know, if it did, there wouldn't be much point in doing a side project. If it sounded like NEVERMORE I think it would be a little redundant . . . Of course it's metal! Kind of like metal-infused hard rock, I think. It's different and it's a chance for me to explore myself — explore myself in other ways! [laughs] Well, for me, and for Peter from SOILWORK as well, it was kind of a chance for us both to 'step outside the box,' because people expect a certain thing from both those bands and with this we don't have to fulfill any expectations. We can do whatever we want." More...

OBITUARY guitarist Ralph Santolla (also ex-DEICIDE, DEATH, ICED EARTH) has issued the following update via his MySpace page:
"OK, first off — I don't know or do any picking excercises! I'm not into that stuff at all. To the people that keep asking 'how do you play arpeggios?' the temptation to post a video on YouTube of myself playing a bunch of arpeggios and saying 'thusly" is almost too strong to resist. It's a stupid question, not to insult anybody, but the answer is so obvious that it makes me almost burst into flames every time I read one of those emails. As with the fast picking stuff or anything else that I've ever played on guitar, I do this: I decide what notes I want to play, then I work on them, LISTENING to what it sounds like, until it sounds like I want it to. Sometimes it takes years. The point is, I don't know ANY secrets about playing guitar, and there's no fairy dust that you can sprinkle on your guitar (or yourself, if that's how you roll) to make you good or great. To master an instrument requires suffering. It is also a process, not something that can ever be finished. In other words, everyone working on it in the world is on the same continuum (?), just at different points along the way. So if you REALLY want to play great, there's only one way — work. It's like trying to take down a mountain with a toothbrush — you can never finish, just scrape a little more every day. That's what I do.
"Having said that, here's a small piece of advice that will instantly make you more musical, and bring out more of each person's unique sound immediately: When you play or practice (any instrument), start and end your phrases before and after the bar line, or the 'one.' Starting and ending phrases within the measure all the time sounds very amateurish, and is especially a bad habit of a lot of metal guitarists,. Try it, and don't spill your beer in the process, another rookie move."
Lion Music recently announced the signing of Roger Staffelbach's Angel Of Eden. Acclaimed for his unique style, aggressive rhythm playing and his considerable soloing skills over 7 albums with prog metallers Artension, guitarist Roger Staffelbach has served up a potent offering of first class song writing over the ten tracks on the debut Roger Staffelbach's Angel Of Eden album "The End Of Never".
Fuelled by Roger's virtuoso guitar work, the melodic soaring vocals of Carsten "Lizard" Schulz [Evidence One, ex Domain], keyboard wizardry of Mistheria [solo, Bruce Dickinson], the powerhouse drumming of Rami Ali [Evidence One] and thunderous bottom end of Steve Di Giorgio [ex-Testament,ex-Death] along with guest performances from John West [ex-Royal Hunt], David Shankle [ex Manowar] and Ferdy Doernberg [Axel Rudi Pell], "The End Of Never" is a first class album from some of metal most respected names offering lush vocal melodies, pulsating rhythms and virtuoso lead breaks within captivating songs.
Here is the complete "The End of Never" track listing:
01. The End Of Never
03. Angel Of Eden
04. Return Of The Pharaoh (Pt. I)
05. The Battle Of 1386
06. Into The Black
07. Return Of The Pharaoh (Pt. II)
08. Keys To Avalon
10. Towards The Light
The Autumn Offering has announced the addition of drummer Allen Royal to their line-up. Here's the official word:
"We are saddened to inform you guys about the loss of our good friend and drummer on our last two albums Nick Gelyon. Nick left on good terms due to some personal issues and the situation is unfortunately out of our control. He was our brother and we will sorely miss him!
Due to the timing of this situation, we enlisted the help of our friend Jon Lee (ex-Death drummer) to track the drums on [our] new album. We want to thank Jon very much for helping us out to get this album done!
We have a new drummer now that we will be touring with, his name is Allen Royal."
Drummer Gene Hoglan formerly of DARK ANGEL, DEATH, STRAPPING YOUNG LAD and TESTAMENT has issued the following update:
"Well, hello everyone, GUESS WHAT? MY SHIRTS ARE FINALLY ON SALE! YAY!
"And Jeez, that was like pulling teeth! What was supposed to be a quick, simple little endeavor took over 8 months from concept to completion. Ho-LEE! All for some stupid SHIRTS!
"But, as you can see the designs, they're bad as fuck, and this initial run of T-shirts and work shirts will range all the way from size medium to 4XL (the 5XLs will be on the next order, ya BALLOONS!), and the girlie-T 'boybeaters' will run from medium to large. Plus, we've got the system down pretty good around here, so your order will get shipped out same day, next day at the latest. And, for those females who would be interested, I'm going to be running a 'Hoglan Hottie of the Month' section over on my website, and how that's gonna work is this; when you buy a shirt and it is delivered to you, take (or have taken) a few shots of yourself modeling it in as sexy a way as you see fit, send 'em in, and you will then be well on your way to that 'T-shirt modeling career' you've always wanted. It's gonna be awesome!
"To order one (or TEN!), just go back to my page, and punch up any of the 3 design pics, and it'll take you directly to my shop!
"Now, I gotta admit, we're still working out the bugs on the 'Shop' end (sorry Europe, for not being able to order shirts! I think we have that bug ironed out now), and that's the main reason I've been waiting to pull the trigger on this whole thing. But, since I just got impatient, and against my advisors here at GHI, I decided to damn the torpedoes and make my little announcement anyway.
"To go along with all of this, my website, HoglanIndustries.com is now also up and running, so stop by and check it out! That is DEFINITELY a work-in-progress, so, cut me some slack on that one. I also have a brand new GeneHoglanMusic page up on Myspace. You can find it here: myspace.com/genehoglanmusic. It'll soon be featuring tons of music from me you don't ordinarily hear too much. Except, right now it's got a buncha stuff you might have heard already, but I'll get one of my lab-coats here at GHI to fix that.
"Now, on to my DVD, 'The Atomic Clock'. I realize that I've been keeping relatively quiet about it of late, but I do want to say that we've completed the filming and editing of it, and it has come out great! I'm really excited! Now, for the last couple weeks while I was in Australia, New Zealand and Alaska with UNEARTH, the minions here at GHI have been finalizing the cover art for it, and it will be going on sale the first couple weeks in September, just past my birthday! What better present can ya give to Gene than by giving yourself the prescence of Gene in your DVD player? I'm all for it! Again, closer to it's release date, I'll be writing a much more detailed account.
"Well, that's about it for that subject for now. Oh, and by the way, for the Aussie fans who will be attended the UNEARTH shows, thanks for buying shirts!
"Speaking of which, I had a real good time jammin' with the boys down there. Ken, a big ball of loud, Slo, my bro and best roomie ever, Mr Phipps, the man commands respect when he walks into a room, and Buz, quite possibly the most hilarious dude to ever be on tour. It was a blast, and I wish them all the best in the future. Yehyehyeh!
"On a quick aside, the tour got off to quite an auspicious start upon touch-down in New Zealand. I'm cruising through customs, when they throw up an X-ray machine upon exiting. Who DOES that? Anyway, they X-ray my stuff, see my contraband, and freak. Alarms, sirens, dogs, screaming guards, high-powered rifles all pointed at my head, the whole shebang. All for the BURRITO I was 'smuggling' from LAX. I'd bought it, taken a bite, and shoved it down to the bottom of my bag, and promptly forgot about it. Oh yeah, I'm kiddin' about the dogs and guards and the whole freak-out part, but it woulda made a way better story if it did happen. Anyway, they take me into the corner and start hittin' me with, 'This is food, you filled out the card that says you're not bringing in food, yet this is food.' And the customs goof has apparently never seen a burrito before, 'cause he's lookin' at it like it's a Martian relic or something. Then he writes it up as a 'meat sandwich,' and I'm like, 'Hey! That's not a 'meat sandwich', it's a burrito!' And he's like, 'A baa…what? How do you spell that?' And I tell him, 'Hey, it ain't my job to teach you how to spell 'burrito', Customs Goof.' Anyway, I do not get off lightly. They charge me TWO HUNDRED DOLLARS right then and there. Jeez! I told 'em, 'I can get rid o' this evidence right here and now, Customs Goof,' but they wanted my dough, not my satisfied belly. Bogus…so, that was the Most Expensive. Burrito. Ever. Damn, I shoulda keistered it…
"Burrito-smuggling. Sounds pervy."
DENIAL FIEND, the new project that unites vocalist Kam Lee (Massacre, Death) with bassist Terry Butler (Massacre, Death, Six Feet Under), drummer Curtis Beeson (Nasty Savage), and Sam Williams (Down By Law, Pseudo Heroes) expressed their excitement for the current recording including Mike Browning's (Morbid Angel, Nocternus, After Death) guest vocal spot on the track "Return To The Tombs Of The Cursed Blind Dead" for their latest release "They Rise".
"Mike did a fucking great job, and his signature evil demonic voice just makes the song that much more dark and sinister!" A huge macabre thanks to Mike for his contribution to the album! DENIAL FIEND have been at MANA studios mixing the new album and everything is going mayhem! Brian Elliot is a fucking evil genius behind the board, and is really making our sound complete! Drums are mixed as well as Bass tracks, and we'll be starting with guitars next... then onto the vocals. Everything is fucking blazing and solid and truely captures that raw feel and style that is DENIAL FIEND!"
Additionally DENIAL FIEND are excited to finally get on the road. Recently Kam Lee had some passport problems which hindered their traveling, but now everything has been cleared up and DENIAL FIEND are 100% doing an upcoming tour.

According to MTV.com, the greatest metal-parody album since "This Is Spinal Tap" is coming our way. No, CROTCHDUSTER hasn't signed to Roadrunner Records — DETHKLOK are getting ready to infect the world with their debut. The stars of the animated Cartoon Network "Adult Swim" program "Metalocalypse" will release two editions of "Dethalbum" on September 25. The regular format will feature 16 tracks, including "Murmaider", "Briefcase Full of Guts", "Birthday Dethday", "Bloodrocuted" and "Deththeme". The double-disc deluxe edition will feature a second CD of six additional tracks, such as "Duncan Hills Coffee Jingle", "Blood Ocean" and "Pickles' Intro - Kill You". The package will also feature the video for "Bloodrocuted" and the first episode from the show's second season, which debuts the last week of September. A DVD of the entire first season will be released October 2.
"Dethalbum" features a guest appearance by legendary drummer Gene Hoglan (STRAPPING YOUNG LAD, DEATH, DARK ANGEL, TESTAMENT). He previously stated about the CD, "What a killer metal record! I can't wait for everyone else to hear it, and since it has now been slated for a September 25th release, that is now gonna be sooner than later, especially with leakage. And yes, it appears that we are going on tour with it as well! The logistics are being worked on as we speak, but it looks like it's gonna be a real killer, multi-media show. I'm looking real forward to that, I've even suspended the booking of a ton of clinics to clear my schedule to be available."
Drummer Gene Hoglan (STRAPPING YOUNG LAD, ex-DARK ANGEL, ex-DEATH, ex-TESTAMENT) has posted this message on his MySpace page:
"What's happening, folks? Well, last Sunday, we visited our friends at The Armoury Studios here in Vancouver, to lay down the drum tracks for Jed's mighty TENET album. Now, I don't know why, but I was really nervous about tracking this one, mainly because I wanted to make sure I gave Jedly's baby the love it deserved, which was well-precluded by the 'up-to-my-eyeballs-ness' of my schedule up here in Van. Y'see, when my manager (and chief poobah here at Gene Hoglan Industries) Byron Stroud called me a month-and-a-half ago about this project, his last words were, "It probably won't even have a release 'til early next year, so we'll have plenty of time to get it done", so I thought, 'Okee dokee, piece o' cake!' Well, schedule-goblins being what they are, upon my return from the UNEARTH stint, I was informed that I was to be tracking in about two weeks. The bricks then appeared in my pants.
Gene: 'B-but Byron, I don't know if I'll have enough time to prepare for this, what with the DVD editing, the MECHANISM mixing/jamming, the MR. PLOW tracking, plus, don't forget about the carousing...'
Byron: 'Shut up and do it, ya fat fuck, or I'll SMASH ya.'
Ahh, the soothing nature of By's subtle persuasion.
So, I broke out the Kraft Extra Creamy peanut butter (Jed's fave), the cheese slices, the Stoli Razz (again, Jed's fave), fired up a buncha Jed's famous 'Thrash Metal Sandwiches' and hunkered down for a good ol' preppin' party.
And, it was just like ridin' a bike. All the songs came back to me, no problem. And I ended up tracking everything in the typical day-and-a-half. Figgers. Don't know why I was worried. I was just happy to hook my brother up. I love Jed, I'd do anything for him.
So, with that done, and hopefully Jed'll be psyched when he hears it (cuz remember, he was in Philly gettin' to know his little one during this entire process, tracking included), I've just been informed that, finally, my 'Gene Shirts' are ready! The girlie-T's were ready last week, but it took a little extra time to get the main T-shirt design right. So, the minions here at Gene Hoglan Industries (God, that cracks me up every time I say it), are finalizing 'the Store', and by Tuesday, we're gonna pull the trigger on the whole shebang. I'm also gonna figure out how to get the designs loaded up around here (little help?), so at least people can get a gander at the beauty that will be, 'My Face Across Your Manboobs'. And, oh, yes, the big brothers are gonna be taken care of as well, as the shirts will be available up to XXXXL.
Oh, by the way, Jedly, I've got an untouched bottle of Stoli Razz here for ya. And an extremely-touched jar o' Kraft Extra Creamy...
See ya all early next week!
Acclaimed heavy metal drummer Richard Christy (ex-Iced Earth, Death, Leash Law, Control Denied), who currently works for "The Howard Stern Show", has teamed up with Metalkill to create a number of PC shooter and Medieval games. There first release will be a game called Skullfuck from one of the characters in Christy's directorial film debut, "Evil Ned 3 -The Return of Evil Ned 2 - Electric Boogaloo".

IBEX MOON RECORDS recording artists, DENIAL FIEND, recently entered the studio to record their much anticipated debut album, "They Rise." Guitarist Sam Williams offered the following update:
"Today we entered GL Studios in Brandon, FL to start recording 'They Rise!' We started with tracking drums. Curt 'the shark' Beeson blazed through three tunes before busting one of the studio's Shure SM57's. Indestructible, my ass! We thought it was pretty funny but the studio staff did not. That cut the session short. But not before we got 'Frankenstein Conquers The World,' 'Son of the Creature,' and the title track down to tape. We would have had 'Flesheaters' down (probably the fastest song on the album), except for the fact that you hear the snare mic getting hit and exploding somewhere during the take! Oh well. We'll be working on drums for the rest of the week, and then starting on guitar overdubs next week."
DENIAL FIEND is the Tampa FL based band featuring in it's ranks Terry Butler (SIX FEET UNDER, ex-MASSACRE, ex-DEATH), Kam Lee (ex-MASSACRE, ex-MANTAS), Curt Beeson (NASTY SAVAGE, LOWBROW) and Sam Williams (DOWN BY LAW, PSEUDO HEROES).
DENIAL FIEND's Dead Awakening 7" EP was released on May 21st, 2007 through IBEX MOON RECORDS. The EP consists of two alternate versions of the tracks "They Rise" and "Cover Me in Blood," which will appear on the band's upcoming full-length to be released this Fall. The pressing will be limited to a mere 500 copies and may be ordered now from the IBEX MOON RECORDS website.
Fromer Strapping Young Lad/Death drummer Gene Hoglan is time taking part as a permanent member in the band Pitch Black Forcast which also features former Mushroomhead singer ‘J-Mann‘ who is going under the name, "J.Popson", Robert Reinard on guitar, and Craig Martini on bass. To check out some demo material and learn more check out the Pitch Black Forcast myspace, http://www.myspace.com/pitchblackforecast. Luxi Lahtinen of Metal-Rules.com recently conducted an interview with Chris Reifert (DEATH, AUTOPSY, ABSCESS). An excerpt from the chat follows:
Metal-Rules.com: First off, it needs to be asked how did you actually meet "Evil" Chuck Schuldiner back in the '80s? When Chuck moved from Canada (he moved to Canada for a brief stint as he was supposed to play on the Canadian SLAUGHTER's debut album which eventually never happened, however) to Florida - and shortly after that to San Francisco, he met you sometime around in 1986, and both Chuck and you recorded DEATH's "Mutilation" demo. Anyway, you were just 17 when you met him - and Chuck was 19. But back to the original question, how and where did you meet him first?
Chris: I was still in high school at the time and had a friend who was a DJ for the school radio station. She told me she was gonna play an ad from Chuck who was looking for band members. I got his phone number from her, called him up and went over to his house. The deal was pretty much sealed right away as I jumped on the chance before anyone else could get a try... ha-ha! Also, I knew about bands like SODOM, BATHORY, POSSESSED, and ARTILLERY which impressed Chuck. This was incredible for me because I had been buying DEATH demos for the past two years and was thrilled that not only would I be playing the songs I knew and loved already, but also some new crushers that went perfectly with the old ones.
Metal-Rules.com: With "Mutilation" demo you landed a deal with Combat Records and you recorded the legendary "Scream Bloody Gore" album that was released in 1987. That album was one of those few albums that were released back in those days (along with POSSESSED's "Seven Churches") that really set the standards for the whole death metal genre, how death metal supposed to sound in the first place - and building up the firm cornerstones around the whole genre musically.
Chris: Thanks for the kind words, man! I still love the sound on "Mutilation"... It came out so dismal and dirty! As for "Scream Bloody Gore", we actually recorded an earlier version in Florida during the summer of '86 that came out so shitty sound-wise, that Combat wrote it off as a mistake and sent us to Los Angeles to do it right. I almost wish I had kept my cassette of the old version to look back on, but I taped over it ages ago.
Metal-Rules.com: DEATH also had this second guitar player named John Hand - and even if he didn't appear on "Scream Bloody Gore", he got his picture on the album. Can you remember why it happened, and how John overall was as a band mate?
Chris: Ah yes, the classic question... We had already recorded "Scream Bloody Gore" and been hanging around with our friend John a lot. He played guitar, so we figured that not only would he work out just fine, but we'd put his photo on the album which was in the process of being put together layout-wise. Combat was supposed to state on the album that Chuck and I played all the music on the album, but they ignored our request, leading to confusion for years. Also, they printed on the inner sleeve: "This album is Don Kaye's folly", meaning that Combat saw us as sort of a joke even though they were putting out the album. Death metal had yet to prove itself at the time and Combat were skeptical about the whole thing, I guess. I have only one copy of the vinyl left and on the inner sleeve where the Don Kaye comment is, I scratched it out and wrote 'fuck you!' over it with a pen. Anyways, back to the John Hand thing, it turned out he didn't work out in the band, but by then the album was already at the printers and it was too late.
Metal-Rules.com: After a short while, Chuck decided to move back to Florida once again, teaming up with the former band mate Rick Rozz, and two members from his band MASSACRE, Terry Butler and Bill Andrews. You decided to stay in San Francisco and form your own band, AUTOPSY. However, I need to ask from you next, didn't you ever even consider moving to Florida along with Chuck, and continue playing in DEATH from there? Can you tell what were the most primary reasons for him to make that big decision and move to Florida eventually? How much actually both you and Chuck discussed about this back then, and do you believe that nobody could have turned Chuck's head about staying in Frisco and about continuing DEATH from there with you?
Chris: Chuck really wanted to go back to Florida to stay. His family, friends and everything else was there, so that's where he wanted to be. He said I could move there and remain in the band, but after living there for the summer I knew that I really didn't want to do that. The heat and humidity was enough reason for me. That shit was brutal for a California guy like me, so I stayed home and started all over again with a new band, AUTOPSY. As fantastic as the DEATH experience was, the decision to stay here was easy for me.
Metal-Rules.com: Why didn't you follow Chuck to Florida back in the day and that way getting a chance to stay in DEATH and make music with him?
Chris: As I said, I couldn't deal with the heat there, plus my family and friends were here, so this is where I wanted to stay. I've never been afraid to start over and this was no exception.
Metal-Rules.com: Chuck continued doing music with a new line-up, and DEATH's second album "Leprosy", was the first fruit of the new DEATH line-up. When the album came out, I assume you also were curious to check it out how it sounded like, correct? Did you like the album, by the way?
Chris: Yeah of course I was curious. I bought it and thought the songs were quite good. The only thing I thought lacking was some excitement on the drums. They were very good, but not a drum roll to be found anywhere. Still, a good heavy album to be sure.
Metal-Rules.com: After Chuck was located to Florida, did you still keep in touch with him from time to time? Or vice versa?
Chris: Yeah, we kept in touch here and there. We bumped into each other at shows a few times and I stayed at his house for a visit in '88 (I think it was). Also, I talked to him right before he died and told him how great the latest VOIVOD album was!
Metal-Rules.com: Chuck recorded 5 other albums after "Leprosy", and I guess it's not any overstatement to say, but each of his albums was hugely praised by both the media and the fans of DEATH. How did you like his later era albums, like "Symbolic" and "The Sound Of Perseverance" that were Chuck's two last studio album with DEATH?
Chris: To be honest, they got a bit technical for my taste. I much prefer the more primitive and savage stuff.
Metal-Rules.com: What was for you the best thing for being a part of one of the most legendary death metal bands? I'm sure you have some good memories about those days, so would you mind sharing some of those experiences with the readers of Metal-Rules.com?
Chris: There are too many great stories to single any out. But we had lots of fun and partied a lot and had a killer time making brutal music. Plus learning about new death metal bands, recording the demo and album... The whole thing was a fuckin' blast.

DENIAL FIEND's previously announced European dates with VITAL REMAINS and BLOODY SIGN are in jeopardy after "vokillist" Kam Lee's (ex-MASSACRE, DEATH) passport application was apparently denied, making it impossible for him to tour outside the U.S.
In addition to Lee, DENIAL FIEND features in its ranks Terry Butler (SIX FEET UNDER, MASSACRE, DEATH), Curt Beeson (NASTY SAVAGE, LOWBROW) and Sam Williams (DOWN BY LAW, PSEUDO HEROES).

Acclaimed heavy metal drummer Richard Christy (ex-ICED EARTH, DEATH, LEASH LAW, CONTROL DENIED), who currently works for "The Howard Stern Show", was recently cast in the upcoming comedy "Harold & Kumar 2" (IMDb). "I filmed my parts in February and had a blast!" says Richard. "The movie is going to be hilarious so please check it out when it comes to a theater near you!"
According to the film's official plot outline, "Harold & Kumar 2" "follows the cross-country adventures of the pot-smoking duo as they try to outrun authorities who suspect them of being terrorists when they try to sneak a bong on board their flight to Amsterdam."
Christy has played in many bands, including ICED EARTH, BURNING INSIDE, DEATH and CONTROL DENIED. Christy joined DEATH after meeting their leader Chuck Schuldiner in a bookstore while the band was looking for a new drummer after the departure of Gene Hoglan. Christy recorded three albums with DEATH (the critically-acclaimed "The Sound of Perseverance", released in 1998; "Live in L.A. (Death & Raw)", 2001; and "Live in Eindhoven", also 2001) and one album with CONTROL DENIED, "The Fragile Art of Existence", which came out in 1999.

The April 2007 issue of Guitar World will feature a lengthy article about the life and music of Chuck Schuldiner, as well as transcriptions and videos of Death songs. The feature story is written by GW executive editor Christopher Scapelliti, who interviewed some of those who were closest to Chuck and knew him best, including his mother, Jane Schuldiner, and Death/Control Denied drummer Richard Christy, who was Chuck’s closest friend.
The feature covers Chuck’s life and music from its happy beginning to its untimely end. Jane talks about Chuck’s childhood and gives a revealing look at his difficulty overcoming the death of his brother Frank. (“He never really came to terms with it. He always missed Frank.”) Metal writer and former Combat Records publicist Don Kaye tells the previously untold story about the label signing Death to their first record contract. (“Steve Sinclair said to me, ‘Somewhere in the credits, I’m gonna put, “This record is Don Kaye’s folly.” ’ ”) And both Jane and Richard reveal Chuck’s struggles to complete the second Control Denied album during the last months of his life. (“He drove himself unmercifully that last year,” says Jane. “We worried so much about him and begged him to rest.”) The article is generously illustrated with previously unpublishe d private photos of Chuck that were kindly provided by Jane.
The April 2007 issue will also feature a complete guitar and bass transcription of the Death song “Pull the Plug.” In addition, the included CD-ROM (newsstand only) will include the guitar and bass transcription for the Death track “The Philosopher” as well as live videos for both songs taken from the 2001 Death DVD Live in L.A. (Death & Raw).
The April 2007 Guitar World will also feature tributes to other fallen guitar heroes, including Dimebag Darrell, Randy Rhoades, Stevie Ray Vaughan and former Allman Brothers guitarist Duane Allman. The issue goes on sale at newsstands everywhere February 13, 2007.
Former DEATH/MASSACRE frontman Kam Lee has issued the following update:
"The rumors are true...
"Some of you have written me asking about the rumors of 'other' bands that I may be involved in this upcoming year. Other then DENIAL FIEND...
"Yes, the rumors are true! Not only will DENIAL FIEND record and release our debut album, 'They Rise', for Ibex Moon Records, but hopefully later will see the release of the SHADOWS WITH KNIVES EP, as well on Ibex Moon. SHADOWS WITH KNIVES is old-school style heavy metal mixed with death metal-style vokills. Like listening to those old metal bands like TROUBLE, TANK, WITCHFINDER GENERAL, MERCYFUL FATE, IRON MAIDEN, and BLACK SABBATH, only with the death grunt of me as well as the grindcore growls of Mark Odechuck of PAINEATER!
"Also... Yes, I am working with Matt Olivo of REPULSION on a new project now tentatively called: MONSTERSHOCK! This is currently in the now, and the band will be old-school death metal/grindcore in the same vein as early DEATH and REPULSION!
"And yes, too... I've been asked to lend my vokill talents for the new HATEPLOW album! I've been speaking with Phil [Fasciana] of MALEVOLENT CREATION, and he is gearing up to do the most hate-filled HATEPLOW album ever, and he has asked me to join in on the foul dark hatred!!
"So yes, I am planning on the year of 2007 to be a busy-ass year! But I'm willing to give 100% into bringing you the 'fans' the most insane, cult, sick-ass vokills you'll ever hear!!!"

The latest issue of the Greek edition of Rock Hard magazine features a tribute to Chuck Schuldiner, including statements and stories from many of the people that played with Chuck — such as Kam Lee, Chris Reifert, Terry Butler, Steve DiGiorgio, Richard Christy and Paul Masvidal — plus music industry notables who dealt with Schuldiner, and other musicians, among them Michael Amott (ARCH ENEMY), Niklas Sundin (DARK TRANQUILLITY), Donald Tardy (OBITUARY), Alex Webster (CANNIBAL CORPSE), Trym (EMPEROR), Dan Lilker (NUCLEAR ASSAULT), Kelly Shaefer (ATHEIST), and Tony Choy (ATHEIST, CYNIC).
Schuldiner passed away on December 13, 2001 after a battle with pontine glioma, a rare type of brain tumor. He was 34 years old.
Ibex Moon Records has inked a deal with the Tampa, Fla., band Denial Fiend, the new project that unites vocalist Kam Lee (Massacre, Death) with bassist Terry Butler (Massacre, Death, Six Feet Under), drummer Curtis Beeson (Nasty Savage), and Sam Williams (Down By Law, Pseudo Heroes).
“I'm proud to work with these metal and death metal pioneers and I look forward to Denial Fiend putting out a great release,” said Ibex Moon owner John McEntee. “I feel that they will appeal to old school and newer metal fans alike.”
The band’s debut album, which will also mark Lee’s first full-length recording in over a decade, is planned for a June 2007 release. The album is tentatively titled “They Rise.”
“I think Denial Fiend will surprise a lot of people,” said Butler. “This is not a ‘flash-in-the-pan’ side project. It’s a band that is dedicated and ready to bring metal to the masses!”
Denial Fiend draws on elements of its members’ individual pasts to create an edgy yet classic sound of its own. A demo recording of the track “Cover Me in Blood” is available on Denial Fiend’s MySpace page.
