Children of Bodom was bred in spring 1993 when guitarist Alexi Laiho (Sinergy, Kylähullut, ex-Impaled Nazarene, Thy Serpent) and drummer Jaska Raatikainen (Virtuocity) decided to form a death metal band under the moniker "Inearthed." They recruited bassist Samuli Miettinen and recorded their first demo "Implosion of Heaven" in 1994. Soon after, the band added guitarist Alexander Kuoppala and keyboardist Jani Pera Pirisjoki. Later on, Miettinen and Pirisjoki left the band and Henkka Seppäla (bass) and Janne Warman (keyboards; Warmen) joined in.

With their own money, the band recorded their debut album "Something Wild" in 1997, blending elements of speed, death and power metal. The album impressed Spinefarm Records so much that they decided to sign the band. Inearthed changed its name to Children of Bodom (named after a notorious mass murdering that occured at Lake Bodom just outside of Helsinki in 1960) in order to get out of their previous contract with a Belgian label. Children of Bodom got a licensing deal with Nuclear Blast to handle releases to the rest of Europe.

Alexander left the band in July 2003, leaving fans in shock as the band had said that they would quit if one of its members left. But Alexi said "Children of Bodom ain't ready to fucking die yet!" as they recruited Alexi's fellow Sinergy guitarist, Roope Latvala (Walhalla, ex-Stone, To/Die/For, Waltari). After ruling Europe, Children of Bodom began to take over North America with their first ever North American tour with Dimmu Borgir in late 2003.

Bodom After Midnight To Release New EP In April

In 2020, the news was flooded: Led by the extremely talented Alexi Laiho, newly formed supergroup Bodom After Midnight was about to become the striking successor to legendary metal band Children Of Bodom. Their sonic plans were massive – including an EP release in the spring followed by a full-length album later in the year.

The EP, "Paint The Sky With Blood" (out April 23 via Napalm Records), was recorded in Finland back in 2020 and was meant to be the beginning of an exciting new chapter. Sadly, that chapter ended far too soon, and now, the three-track piece embodies a whole new meaning. "Paint The Sky With Blood" is an overwhelming tribute to an outstanding artist and an exceptional sonic heritage – matchless late guitarist/vocalist Alexi Laiho – and at the same time, a modern homage to the genre itself.

"Like ourselves, Alexi was beyond stoked about these songs and anxious to get these out so we are happy that we can fulfill his wish. Needless to say that we are honored and proud to be a part of his very last creative work and unleash it the way he wanted it to. It’s time to let the beast out of the cage one more time as a celebration of Alexi’s music,
legacy and the man himself."

Children Of Bodom To Change Their Name?

Finnish metal outfit Children Of Bodom, who recently announced the departure of Henkka (T. Blacksmith - bass), Janne (Wirman - keyboards) and Jaska (Raatikainen - drums,) may have to alter their moniker, frontman Alexi Laiho revealed in a new interview. Since this announcement, it has come to light that the Children Of Bodom name belongs to AA & Sewira Consulting Oy, the company owned by Raatikainen, Seppälä and Wirman. On June 28th, the trio filed an application with the National Board of Patents and Registration of Finland, and their application was subsequently granted for a five-year period starting on October 1st. This means that although Laiho intends to continue to move forward, the new outfit can't use the Children Of Bodom moniker without the permission of Wirman, Raatikainen and Seppälä.

Speaking with Finland's Soundi and Helsingin Sanomat, Laiho revealed things within the band have been tense for quite some time, and that Wirman, Raatikainen and Seppälä made the decision to leave last year. Things were pushed towards the final decision to call it quits in December during the band's recent Russian tour.

Laiho: "We fought a lot within the band, and I can honestly admit that those fights were mainly my fault. They always started with some misunderstanding. I have no bad feelings towards any of them."

On moving forward, Laiho says the band name may need to be altered slightly: "Maybe it could be just Bodom or the name of one of our songs, but it must be a name that suggests that it's the same band."

Laiho and Freyberg have, according to Helsingin Sanomat, already found a new bassist and a new drummer. If all goes as planned they will start performing live next spring.

Laiho: "Of course, there's a bit of sadness since we've been a band for a really long time. We've had more good times than bad times. On the other hand, I also feel relieved. I'm pretty fucking excited that I get to play with the new guys. The thrill of playing with a new line-up seems to quell the sadness."

Three Children Of Bodom Members To Leave The Band

Finland’s perhaps best-known metal act, Children Of Bodom, will be playing their final show with their current line-up this coming December. "A Chapter Called Children Of Bodom" will take place at the Black Box in Helsinki Ice Hall on December 15th. Below is a statement from the band:

"It is with heavy hearts that we announce that 2019 will be the last for Children Of Bodom with this line-up.

"After almost 25 years with Bodom, thousands of shows and 10 albums, it is time for Henkka, Janne and Jaska to step back and change direction within their lives. All three will miss the fans and supporters in every city in every country the band ever played.

"The last show of this line-up will be on the 15th of December at Helsinki Ice Hall. Tickets still remain for some of the Finnish shows in December.

"Alexi and Daniel will have further announcements about their plans to keep creating new music in the future.

"Thanks again for everything - Children Of Bodom"

Children Of Bodom Posts New Music Video Online

Finland's melodic death superstars CHILDREN OF BODOM have released an official animated video for the title track of their latest album, Hexed. The RMIT University in Australia spent the last 15 weeks working on the video, with producers Aaron McLoughlin and Simon Norton spending around 3000 working hours with their team to create the video. Check it out below.

Aaron states: "As always, we like to come up with something that suits what the band is all about, so we drew inspiration from the song lyrics as well as the monochromatic imagery found in Children of Bodom’s videos and album art. We decided a black and white horror film would be cool - set on a lake, of course! And we had to include a Roy cameo appearance, obviously! Although Hexed is a fast track, it’s also particularly measured in the way it plays out over the 5-minute duration, so part of the fun was crafting a cinematic narrative that flows with the amazing technical precision of the music. The animation students at RMIT University in Melbourne, Australia are some of the most talented rising stars in the world, and I think they’ve done a terrific job on this project. Animating metal videos is such a fun thing to do at university, and the team felt very honoured creating this film for Children of Bodom."

Bassist Henkka adds: "It’s such a cool thing to have a video of one my favourite tracks of the album. And the fact it’s made by Aaron and his 25 students in Australia is even cooler. The black and white calm mood suits perfectly to this not-so-calm song. The lake and it’s reflection makes a perfect ending for it." More...
