A kind of metalhead Mecca, the ProgPower USA festival at Center Stage in Atlanta is back in session for its 13th year today and tomorrow. In the kickoff of their US tour, Nightwish and Kamelot tag-teamed for two nights before the official ProgPower festivities got going. To add to the enormity of the occasion, Jon Oliva of the mighty Savatage gave a songwriting workshop before the show in the smaller venue next to Center Stage. For attendees, this was going to be a night to remember, as well as a completely sold-out show.
Backstage before the show, I caught up with Nightwish bassist Marco Hietala for an interview. We ended up rehashing Nightwish's legendary USA debut at ProgPower 4 back in 2003, along with talking about new plans for his other band, Tarot, and the "Imaginaerum" movie. Tonight, Nightwish was going to be doing a special 2nd show with a few songs that were different from the night before. Many fans had come out for both nights, and it was soon clear to them that whatever sound and jet-lag issues were grating on the performance last night were taken care of for this second night. Kamelot recently announced the recruitment of new vocalist Tommy Karevik. Tommy has now checked in with the following statement about joining the band:
"I am truly happy to finally get to write these words to you...
"It is with great respect I look at the things Kamelot has achieved over the years, both in terms of songwriting and when it comes to reaching out to the heart of the listener. Changing a singer is always a big thing for a band and even more so when you had a singer like Roy.
"But although I am humble before the task ahead, I am also strongly confident in the new material and in the future to come! I am so honored to now be a part of the family and I can't wait to move into the new era of the band together with the guys. You can rest assured I will give it my all!
"From this day, a new journey has begun and I am really eager to meet you all along the way to share with you my passion for this music.
"I believe in this so thank you for believing in me! All the love / yours sincerely,

The American/German symphonic metal band Kamelot is proud to announce another key piece leading to the release of an upcoming new studio album. A question foremost in every Kamelot fan's mind has been: Who is the group's new lead singer?
and mastermind and guitarist Thomas Youngblood has now revealed: "The new man is Scandinavian Tommy Karevik!"
The general public may not be overly familiar with the 30 year old Swede, Karevik, but people in the industry know him as the frontman of the Swedish band, Seventh Wonder. Youngblood states: "We had around 800 candidates for the vacant position, among them a number of really renowned musicians, and having to reject them really wasn't easy. We want to thank all the applicants, thank you for your understanding and we wish you all lots of success in the future!"
In the search for a new singer, Thomas Youngblood found YouTube to be an amazing tool: "I listened to a clip of a studio production featuring Tommy and have to confess that his performance really amazed me. His approach to melodies and themes suits Kamelot perfectly, and during our European shows we had plenty of opportunity to find out what a great guy he is."
Tommy first appeared as one of the guest singers on Kamelot's 2011 Pandemonium World Tour. Tommy states: "The tour was a lot of fun and I met a lot of nice people and got some good experience. The guys were super nice and we had a great time together! By then I was really into the band's music and had fallen in love with the amazingly loyal and dedicated fans at every show." More...

The ProgPower USA festival is approaching its thirteenth year, but if you were to look at the number of international bands who have made the Atlanta-based festival the site of their US debut, you would find that number even more impressive – a solid eighty-two. That number includes bands such as Nightwish, Blind Guardian, Edguy, Gamma Ray, Pagan’s Mind, Circus Maximus, Stratovarius, Riverside, and more. The US is not known for heavy metal festivals – at least not of the level that Europe is known for, with Wacken, Hellfest, and all sorts of other open-airs. In the US, ProgPower is the longest-running and most well-known of the handful of festivals we do have. Moreover, as evidenced by the title, this is a pointedly progressive- and power- metal themed festival, with performances by an average of 14-16 bands over several days.
Last year, I had the privilege of attending the festival and contributed a series of write-ups about each of the days afterwards. The experience was much like a Comic-Con or anime convention, only geared around highly amplified sound aimed at rattling my brain and rocking my soul. It was like another world altogether, given that everyone I interacted with on that three-day stretch could talk for hours on end about the juxtaposition of synthesizer and guitar solos with no reservations. It felt like a family reunion. More...

Kamelot has returned to the Steamhammer/SPV fold for a worldwide deal (excluding Japan). The group, surrounding guitarist and composer Thomas Youngblood, is currently working on the drum recordings with renowned sound engineer Jim Morris at the Morrisound Studios in Tampa, Florida, before work on the album is due to be completed at Wolfsburg's Gate studios under the direction of producer Sascha Paeth (Edguy, Avantasia, Rhapsody).
The title of Kamelot's current release will be announced at the end of June, together with the name of the band's new vocalist. However, according to Youngblood, one thing is certain: "Our fans can really look forward to our new record, because it represents Kamelot in every way!"
Youngblood commented on the style and content of the album: "The new songs sound more symphonic and melodic than our last two studio recordings. The material brings to mind albums such as Karma (2001) and The Black Halo (2005). In addition, this will be the best production that Kamelot have ever delivered. Because while other acts tend to opt for low-budget productions due to the difficult market situation, we have gone the opposite way: the new album will be a real statement, in terms of our compositions as well as in terms of our sound."
The album has been scheduled for release on September 24th, 2012 in Europe, September 21st in Germany, and September 25th in North America. Kamelot is set to play a number of festivals (among them Wacken Open Air and Bang Your Head) as early as July and August before embarking on a U.S. tour alongside Nightwish in September/October and a major headliner tour of Europe in November 2012.
"We are more than proud to welcome back one of the best metal bands around here at SPV. From 2005 to 2009 we had already had the pleasure of working very successfully with Thomas Youngblood & Co, which we will continue and increase with the new masterpiece coming in September 2012," says Olly Hahn (A&R SPV/Steamhammer). Kamelot Germany has posted a new interview online with Thomas Youngblood, in which he discusses the band's turbulent last year and plans to unveil a new vocalist during Summer festival season. Excerpts from the interview follow:
Kamelot Germany: Last year was a turbulent year for Kamelot, but also very exciting with three very successful tours in Europe, South America and North America. What where your personal most memorable tour moments of 2011?
Thomas Youngblood: There were so many, some of my favorites were Santiago Chile, first show of the touring season. SOLD OUT shows like Amsterdam, New York, Montreal and Oslo, with the Kamelot Nation in full force, Salt Lake City, Utah, where we never played before and the crowd was soooo loud. There were so many amazing nights last year, all of them were really special. The touring was really a great kick for us to get back to the studio and come back asap.
KG: Writing the new album is already underway, with a planned release date for September 2012. How is it going so far?
TY: Going great, we have around 6-7 songs ready for preproduction. Oliver and I will do another songwriting session soon, we are still looking at locations. Maybe Thailand or Norway. Cold or Hot, which one to choose? Following that we will be in Germany for a few months with Sascha working on the album, along with Miro, Olaf and the usual crew there that has been with us since Karma. Special guests are being discussed now, it will be a blast, I’m looking forward to it!
KG: The deadline for submissions to become the new singer of Kamelot is by the end of January. How is the audition process going and when do you plan to announce the new singer?
TY: Auditions are going great, I think we have around 800 emails and submissions. We will not announce the new singer until later when the album is nearly finished being recorded. Unless of course it gets leaked, which these days is not too difficult. The new “Official” singer will be debuted at the Summer Festivals.
