You could spot someone that was going to the Corrosion of Conformity show a mile away in the French Quarter as they walked, sometimes stumbled, around in the hot afternoon sun of St. Patrick’s Day; black, worn band shirt, a few drinks under the belt, and a happy smile. Even in their stupor, they hovered around One Eyed Jacks just waiting for those doors to open so they could finally see their friends. Although many people coming go to numerous concerts a month, a good bit came just to see COC, the band that they used to go see in the small, dank clubs of New Orleans when they were much younger. It was a reunion for them. More...
After Pallbearer marched its audience toward a giant, gaping abyss at ND, I hustled a couple blocks west to Dirty Dog Bar. I learned an important lesson last year: If you don’t have a badge or wrist band, show up early to ensure you get into the venue. Last year, I showed up a band or two into the Metal Alliance show and missed Saint Vitus and Crowbar. Once the doors opened, the bar’s staff allowed a few badge and wrist-band holders in first and then opened the flood gates to everyone else.
The Atlas Moth did not bide its time in leisurely boredom like me. The Chicago-based space sludge masters were busy setting up for their second show in the span of a couple of hours. The group filled in the vacancy left by Rwake, who also bowed out of The Atlas Moth’s earlier show. Without their planetary light show that illuminated ND’s, The Atlas Moth’s performance was not as visually stunning. Their keyboards, effects and coarse tones updated the flowery texture of traditional psychedelia. Although they call Profound Lore home, The Atlas Moth could fit right in on Neurosis’ Neurot label. The planet's most dynamically wicked duo, Black Cobra, has been confirmed as one of the support acts for crossover kings Corrosion Of Conformity's June tour, the diverse lineup also including Torche and Gaza. The rampage will begin June 1st and surge clockwise through North America with 18 dates confirmed through June 23rd as of now.
This stateside trek will follow Black Cobra's scheduled European tour also supporting COC along with Zoroaster, the fun to begin on April 4th and leading up to the band's performance at the annual Roadburn Festival in Tilburg, Holland.
Before that mayhem goes down, Black Cobra is already confirmed for some massive action at SXSW next week. Wednesday will see the 'Cobra coiled on stage at the ToneDeaf Touring showcase, sharing the stage with Saviours, Rwake, A Storm of Light, Zoroaster, and headliners Corrosion Of Conformity. Then on Friday they take the stage at the massive "Death Match" event -- hosted by Thrasher Magazine and Converse, curated by The Power of the Riff, Southern Lord and Brooklyn Vegan -- the monolithic day show featuring OFF!, Trash Talk, Ceremony, Heartless, Code Orange Kids, Deafheaven, Full Of Hell, Balaclava, Dead In The Dirt and headliners High On Fire, of course in addition to Black Cobra's devastating mid-lineup appearance. Weedeater has checked in with the following update about the band's upcoming activity:
"It's been a while since we've chimed in, we know. But regarding Weedeater, silence is sometimes a good thing, this being one of those times. First off, and as many of you might already know, we are very happy to announce that Jason...The Dragon is fully completed and in production now to be released March 15th via Southern Lord on CD, and sometime in April on vinyl. We would like to thank Steve Albini and everyone at Electrical Audio for once again doing a great job of capturing this band on tape, and a big thanks to John Golden and Golden studios for another superb mastering job. And of course a big thanks to Greg and everyone at Southern Lord for helping us make this happen. Who knows, one of those new songs might just pop up here soon on myspace so you can grab a quick listen. We will also have a few special pre-order options for you early birds; stay tuned for updates on that front.
"Lastly, we are heading out to tour in support of Jason... very soon, with the US jaunt (sponsored by the good folks at The Brooklyn Vegan) starting February 18th and a European tour (to be announced soon) following Roadburn. Touring support in the US will be provided by our old friends in ASG (1st leg) and Zoroaster (2nd leg). It's gonna be a great time! Dates are posted below and tickets will go on sale later this week. NOLA slude act EyeHateGod kicks off its new tour tonight in Birmingham, Alabama at the Bottletree. From there the band will make its way through 13 more cities before heading back home in time for holiday hedonism. Supporting the band in the pandemonium will be Phobia, as well as Crowbar, Goatwhore, and Zoroaster on select dates.
Commented vocalist Mike Williams: "EyeHateGod are excited to head out on this next USA trek and ready to do damage. EHG tours are one of a kind; each unique with its own abusive, miserable, broken features. Miss them now and maybe miss them forever..."
Added drummer Joey LaCaze: "The band is probably the tightest its ever been and different, more obscure songs have been added to the traditional set of all-time favorites. Get in the right frame of mind and vent all of your holiday frustrations."
