70,000Tons Of Metal Announces Destination Change

70000TONS OF METAL, The Original, The World’s Biggest Heavy Metal Cruise, has announced a change in the destination for its 2026 voyage. The upcoming edition of the festival at sea, taking place from January 29 to February 2, 2026, will now sail from Miami, Florida to Nassau, the Bahamas aboard Royal Caribbean’s Freedom of the Seas.

Originally planned to return to Labadee, Haiti, the decision to reroute the journey was made out of an abundance of caution and with the well-being of all Sailors, artists, and crew as the top priority.

"While Labadee has been a great port of call on past sailings, we are closely monitoring the evolving situation in Haiti and its surrounding regions," said Andy Piller, Skipper of 70000TONS OF METAL. "Ensuring the safety and comfort of our Survivors is non-negotiable. With that in mind, we’ve made the proactive decision to change course for 2026. Nassau provides a welcoming alternative that allows us to maintain the world-class experience our Sailors expect — both on board and ashore." More...

Tyr Shares "Dragons Never Die" Music Video

Faroe Islands-based Viking metallers Tyr has unveiled their latest single, "Dragons Never Die." The track comes by way of the band‘s stunning ninth full-length studio album, "Battle Ballads," set for release on April 12th via Metal Blade Records!

Once crowned, "powerful, heroic and memorable," by New Noise and lauded by Exclaim for, "expertly balancing power and death metal" and perfecting, "the Viking metal formula,” with Battle Ballads, Tyr has crafted an album that resounds with their trademark Viking metal sound -- a crushing, soaring, batch of classical embellished songs that conjure images of galloping steeds, clashing swords, and hard-fought victories. At the same time, the band has experimented with new writing styles and musical techniques and created songs that are structurally simpler, yet musically more variegated. For founding frontman Heri Joensen, it‘s a clear illustration of how he plans to continue exploring different approaches in the future while staying true to the spirit of thunderous Viking metal.

"We consciously decided to make this a more direct album with songs that are easier for listeners to get right away than some of the stuff on our last album, or maybe even on our 2006 album Ragnarok, which was very progressive,” says Joensen. “With Battle Ballads, there are progressive elements here and there, but we tried to keep the songs based on one or two musical ideas each, and work on everything from there. So, in a way, it‘s more concise than our last album, but it‘s more epic because of the symphonic elements."

There‘s no escaping the masterfully meticulous blend of melody and savagery on "Battle Ballads." Notes Joensen of the band‘s "Dragons Never Die" single, "The song starts with a long harmonic crescendo on drums and guitar reminiscent of classical Deep Purple, then shifts an eastern inspired melodic journey back in time with wordless singalong parts, going into a rhythmically simple and stomping verse about a gold-grabbing dragon and a protagonist set on defeating it. It‘s a fast and riveting chorus. The metal story progresses and culminates into a face melting solo. With the last chorus, the protagonist finds that becoming rich beyond measure just makes him the next dragon." More...

Tyr Shares New Live Video

Ahead of their upcoming live album, Nordic metal troop Tyr have debuted the stunning new video "Hold The Heathen Hammer High." The video comes from the bands famed performance with the Symphony Orchestra of the Faroe Islands, filmed on February 8th, 2020, at the Nordic House in Tórshavn, Faroes Islands, and compliments Tyr's shimmering, infectious sound in a crystal-clear live setting.

"The lyrics of ‘Hold the Heathen Hammer High’ are about upholding the old Northern ways, but in a modern fashion, not religiously but culturally," explains Tyr founder, guitarist and vocalist Heri Joensen. "The original video was very anti-Christian, although that was never the main message of the song. This new symphonic live version, with the symphony orchestra Holding the Heathen Hammer High with us, will bring out the modern heathen in us all!"

The live album, "A Night At The Nordic House (With the Symphony Orchestra of the Faroe Islands)," will be available in multiple limited-edition vinyl variants, including 2 LP (gatefold, with insert, poster, digital download), a 2 CD/DVD digi-book with 12-page booklet, and everywhere digital music is sold on March 18th, 2022. Týr To Release New Live DVD

Týr delivers a stunning show performed live with the Symphony Orchestra of the Faroe Islands. This special event was recorded at The Nordic House in Tórshavn, the Faroes on February 8, 2020. This seismic live album will be available on Metal Blade Records on 2LP (gatefold, with insert, poster, digital download), a 2 CD/DVD digi-book set with 12-page booklet, and everywhere digital music is sold on March 18, 2022.

"Working with the Symphony Orchestra was without a doubt one of the highlights of our careers," admits vocalist Heri Joensen. "The feeling of sheer sophisticated power behind us was extraordinarily uplifting. We were awed by how well the songs worked in a symphonic setting. 'By The Sword In My Hand', for example, seems to take on a new life. It is based on a Nordic traditional melody, and the lyrics are about Sigmundur Brestisson, Faroese Viking chieftain who, on behalf of the king Olaf of Norway, forcibly Christianized the Faroes. We are very excited to finally release a live DVD, CD and LP, and even with the incredible new artwork by Gyula Havancsák, that excellently captures the epic atmosphere of the event. In other news, our team is working on tours, festivals and shows, so please stay tuned and patient. We hope to see you all soon!" More...

Surma Reveals Debut Album Details

On November 6th, Surma will release their full-length debut, "The Light Within," via Metal Blade Records. For a first preview of the album, a lyric video for the new single, "Reveal The Light Within", can be viewed below.

Soaring, dramatic and moving, "The Light Within" introduces Surma as one of the most riveting symphonic metal bands on the contemporary scene. Spread out across 13 tracks in 47 minutes, there is not a moment wasted as they weave their epic stories of optimism around music that is suitably gigantic but compressed into relatively short songs. "I think the real message of the album is to give hope to everyone, no matter what they are struggling with," states vocalist Viktorie Surmøvá, best known for her work with Bohemian Metal Rhapsody.

Teaming up with guitarist/vocalist Heri Joensen of Týr, the band began in 2018 and spent most of 2019 writing, arranging and recording the music that would comprise their debut. Starting from vocal melodies and building the songs up around them, all are very dense, rich with orchestrations and searing guitar and propelled by driving rhythms. Alongside the core duo, the record features performances by Rens Bourgondiën on bass, drummer Andrey Ischenko (ex-Arkona), and Lars Vinther arranged most of the orchestrations with Joensen contributing a little to this side of recording too. Maintaining overall control over proceedings, Surmøvá and Joensen produced the record themselves in the guitarist's home studio with the drums tracked in Moscow. With touring commitments with Týr and other interruptions, the recording process was broken up, but Joensen asserts it was a "walk in the park", again confirming the chemistry that comes when the two work together. Looking ahead, the general positivity that exists around them is once more pushed to the fore. States Surmøvá: "I believe we can make something good in this world, and we can help people through hard times and inspire them to have hope in the future, and generally inspire a better mood and a better feeling in those who listen to our music." Tyr Posts New Music Video Online

On March 8th, the Faroe Islands' Tyr will release their eighth full-length, Hel, via Metal Blade Records. Hel is a collection of ruthlessly melodic and irresistibly compelling progressive folk metal that will immediately resonate with any who have followed the band at any point over the two decades of their storied career. For a preview of the album, a video for the new single, "Sunset Shore" can be viewed below.

Týr vocalist / guitarist Heri Joensen comments: "In early January, immediately after spending our holidays in the Faroes, Gunnar and I traveled to Hungary to our bandmates, Tadeusz and Attila, in Budapest. Finally, it was time to shoot another video, our first since 2014, and we’re very happy to present this one to you!

"The Hungarian film production crew, Mihaszna Film, arranged the trips, starting from Budapest and going first to the Julian alps in Slovenia. In the fields and rivers of the snowy mountains we had some amazing scenery for 'overworld' part of the video. A few days later we traveled on to the caves of Szent-István in northern Hungary, and deep underground we found some dark and gloomy caves to be the perfect backdrop for the underworld part of this video.

"Terji wrote 'Sunset Shore', for our upcoming album, 'Hel' - to be relased on March 8th, and he plays the solo on the album version, but not in this video. We decided it was the perfect opportunity to introduce you all to the amazing talent of Attila Vörös, who recorded his own version of the solo a few days before the video shooting. The lyrics, written by me, are about how the mind can sometimes be a windswept and weatherworn landscape, and how the only thing to do, in spite of hopelessness and despair, is to aim for a better place and to work towards better times.

"We hope you enjoy the result!" More...

Tyr Guitarist Leaves The Band

Terji Skibenæs, guitarist of Faroese folk metal veterans Tyr, has announced that he has decided to leave the band. A post on social media reads as follows:

"This is it. I am now officially leaving the band TÝR after 17 years. After months of thinking this through carefully, I’ve finally come to the decision that it’s time for me to quit.

"The reason is very simple: I have no desire whatsoever to play in TÝR anymore.
There’s no drama or anything going on between me and the others. It’s just me not having any joy to play the music in the style of TÝR anymore.
I want to thank Heri Joensen and Gunnar Thomsen for the all the time we had and I wish TÝR all the best in the future.

"And thanks to all the fans for the support through the years. My last show with Týr will be at Sabaton open air in August.

"More news to follow soon about my future projects.

-Terji."
