Latest Kataklysm News
Below is our complete Kataklysm news coverage, including columns and articles pertaining to the band. Some articles listed may be indirectly related, such as side projects of the band members, etc.
Note: We began associating news directly with bands in late 2003. Therefore, earlier band news may not be listed on this page.
KATAKLYSM are entering the studio this week with producer and guitarist J-F Dagenais. Drummer Max Duhamel will be first laying down the drum work for the band's forthcoming new album, entitled Prevail. The recording process will last five weeks, with vocalist Maurizio Iacono scheduled to record his vocals in September.
Comments Maurizio: "The album is done and ready to go, although it was a breeze to write this album as things came so naturally, on the lyrics end, I worked the hardest I have in years making sure everything is where it should be, at times it was real difficult but the end result will speak for itself. I'm truely convinced this album will take no prisoners, as you know we don't repeat the same record twice, this album stands in a league of its own... and I'm not saying it's our best album, because only the fans have the right to say wether it is or not, all I'm saying is I listen to the songs and I wanna punch the fucking wall, that means we are on to something good."
Kataklysm has also hired the services of producer Jason Suecof (CHIMAIRA, TRIVIUM, THE BLACK DAHLIA MURDER) to mix the album in early January, 2008,
Prevail will also feature some guest appearances, to be announced at a later date.
The album is scheduled for a worldwide release date on May 23rd, 2008 via Nuclear Blast records
Stay tuned as the band will release a few touring annoucements very soon.
This brief announcement has been posted on KATAKLYSM's official website:
"After much thought, KATAKLYSM have decided to cancel the few dates they had lined up with DEVILDRIVER next month, in favor to enter the studio."
Comments guitarist J-F Dagenais: "I think we - all in the band - looking forward to hitting the road again and raise mayhem, but there's a lot of magic that just created with the writing process and all of us are too much into it to break the mood and progress. My studio is ready and we decided to start recording the new album 'Prevail' on August 15 and work on it til we leave for our European tour at the end of September. We also decided that we will mix the album in January in Florida with producer Jason Suecof (TRIVIUM, CHIMAIRA, THE BLACK DHALIA MURDER), which we are looking forward to. Myself and Jason will make sure the album is as flawless as possible with a crushing production!! So for the many fans that were hitting up our MySpace and website, looking forward to seeing us live this summer... we sincerely apologize but it's for a good cause, trust me. On the other side of things, we have some very serious offers for November and December so we are planning on hitting the road in the States then. There's some big things in the horizon. We will keep you posted!"
DEVILDRIVER have announced headlining tour dates with GOD FORBID, KATAKLYSM and SUICIDE SILENCE in August. KATAKLYSM singer Maurizio Iacono has the following studio update:
"I have to take back a few things I said on my previous report, the way the album first started to get put together it seemed to be a lot more dark but in melodic way, but what makes writing so fun is you never know how the end result will be. Yesterday we finished a song called 'Breathe To Dominate' and I could already see the pit going crazy and being a live smash.
Smoothest album we have written in years. I thought In The Arms Of Devastation was a very good experience but this one is more like everyone looking at each other after completing a song… and saying… 'Perfect'.
We worked on another new song this morning, a song called 'The Vultures Are Watching'
The band is really focused. It's the first time in a very long time all four of us are writing an album together in the same room. Feeling good!"
Kataklysm has managed to sell around 900 copies of their 2006 CD "In the Arms of Devastation" in the United States during the seven days ending June 3, 2007. The album's total U.S. sales now stand at just under 19,000, according to Nielsen SoundScan, landing them on Billboard's Heatseeker charts.
The band had this to say in response, "Dear fans, your boys in KATAKLYSM keep making impressive impacts... The latest being the band's latest opus and newly rereleased 'In the Arms of Devastation' album, which just hit the Heatseekers chart in Billboard on position #9 in the USA!! According to the band's label Nuclear Blast, this is phenomenal and unheard of for an album that is over one year old to chart! So a BIG thank you to all of you for your endless support. Get ready for our next album 'Prevail' because it will slaughter!!!!"
In followup to previous reports, Metal Reigns has posted a 20-minute audio interview with guitarist Jean-Francois Dagenais, conducted during the band's recent Invaluable Darkness Tour with DIMMU BORGIR. Download and listen to the interview at their website.
Maurizio Iacono, vocalist for Kataklysm, has issued the following message:
First off, I want to sincerely thank everyone involved with The Invaluable Darkness Tour we just completed with our friends Dimmu Borgir. We would like to thank them for treating us like brothers and to all their crew for helping us out when we needed it. This new friendship is forged in blood! Thanks also to Devildriver whom we shared a bus with and developed a new friendship. Last but not least, the dudes in Unearth, all cool people. This tour was a triumph for us in all senses, especially to be able to play for our fans on a bigger package, who proved to us everyday that all the blood and sweat wasn't for nothing. The words of encouragement from our fans mean EVERYTHING.
"We're gonna finish writing a new album, titled 'Prevail', this summer, because we know how important this one will be for our fans, and 'prevail' is exactly what we want to do with this album. It has to be as perfect as we can make it. If it doesn't bring the goosebumps, it ain't coming out right. Guitarist J-F Dagenais will produce and engineer the album as always. In the meantime, we have two more tours planned this year: late summer or early fall in North America and in Europe in October with Behemoth and Aborted. A big thank you to all our supporters worldwide. We won't disappoint — you know how we roll!"
Continuing my quest to explore the Baltimore metal scene, as I've previously gravitated toward DC and Northern Virginia exclusively, I made my first trip to Sonar to catch the Dimmu Borgir, Unearth, Devildriver and Kataklysm on the "Invaluable Darkness Tour" Sunday, April 29, 2007 - making this report long overdue. I'm not sure I would have ventured out to see Dimmu Borgir and Kataklysm alone even though I like them, but I enjoy Unearth's live show immensely and had yet to see Devildriver, whose last album I enjoyed a lot. I was still very interested in see Dimmu Borgir live, both because I have enjoyed their recent efforts and I had yet to catch a black metal band live in an intimate environment (Ozzfest appearances not withstanding). Vocalist Maurizio Iacono of the Canadian death metallers KATAKLYSM has issued the following update:
"Here we are, almost half way through the 'Invaluable Darkness' tour and the fans' reception to KATAKLYSM has been nothing short of astonishing. Opening a tour like this is a big task for any band and on top of it, being the band on the bill with the least recognition and the only band that hasn't been on Ozzfest and tours of the like makes our job ten times harder... BUT my friends, let me tell you something — it's been the fucking opposite! Every show we came ready and determined with no expectations, so we went on and the place was full and the people were loud. They are ready for us, singing our lyrics, pounding their fists in the air and creating some of the biggest mosh pits we have ever seen in North America for KATAKLYSM. We've had several promoters coming to thank us after the show, impressed with the reactions, etc. 'Havent seen anything like it for an opening act in a very long, long time' type comments. It's really overwhelming for us and our answer to them is this: thank the fans for coming early and supporting us, thank them for making this show so great for all of us. The fans have all the power, they are the voice, not the industry. We serve the fans.
"Thank you for supporting the underdog, we love it!!!
"OK, now let's talk about the band responsible that gave KATAKLYSM the chance in the first place: DIMMU BORGIR.
"They have been phenomenal. They set a real dark ambiance and the expectation is met. I enjoy watching them every night, DEVILDRIVER and UNEARTH have also been giving 100% kicking ass and doing very good. We are getting along with everyone on the tour... and YES, for all those who are wondering, we are also sharing a bus with DEVILDRIVER, It was either gonna be the end of the world or we would respect each other and make it work. They extended their hand to us, and if I may say so myself, it's been all good. The boys have had nothing but respect for KATAKLYSM and we're having fun with them.
"Well that's it for now. Memorable, memorable... words that come to my mind. Everyone come early, don't miss out on KATAKLYSM's devastation... Be there and say hello if you see us in the crowd, we wanna meet with you."
KATAKLYSM recently decided to "immortalize" the character that was featured on the cover of their most recent album, "In the Arms of Devastation," and have him re-appear as the main character — dubbed "The Heartbeast" — on their next offering.
Commented KATAKLYSM vocalist Maurizio Iacono: "We had so [much] killer feedback on the artwork but especially on the character that we decided to keep him as the band's fifth band member... kinda like IRON MAIDEN did with 'Eddie.' We have the perfect concept for the next album art... it will be bad-ass!"
Dimmu Borgir made a Chicago stop on Wednesday at the House of Blues in support of their first studio album in four years, In Sorte Diaboli... Photos can be viewed here.
UNEARTH were the main attraction at last week's Adult Swim's Aqua Teen Hunger Force Colon Movie Film For Theatres launch party in Austin TX.
UNEARTH have recorded the song "THE CHOSEN" for the forthcoming Aqua Teen Hunger Force feature film, Aqua Teen Hunger Force Colon Movie Film for Theaters ( in theaters on 4/13/2007) and the accompanying soundtrack Aqua Teen Hunger Force Colon Movie Film for Theaters Colon The Soundtrack (in stores on 4/10/2007).
Straight after their stint in Austin, TX, the band headed to Europe to join forces with DAATH, DESPISED ICON, and Metal Blade Record's newest member to the family, JOB FOR A COWBOY on a tour that will lead into late April.
"We are all eager as fuck to headline the UK and Europe for the first time. We have done some amazing European tours before, but it will feel damn good to play a full set and put on our show for our friends overseas" says vocalist, Trevor Phipps "We are hitting up some smaller venues, most without barricades, so we can bring a real Unearth show to the people. We hand picked Job For a Cowboy, Despised Icon and Daath to make sure the entire bill was one that will keep the crowds looking over their shoulders at all times!"
UNEARTH will then make their way back to the US for the highly anticipated tour with DIMMU BORGIR, DEVILDRIVER and KATAKLYSM.
"After the headlining run we come right back home for a North American tour with Dimmu Borgir, Devildriver and Kataklysm. We haven't hit the road with Dimmu since the 2004 Ozzfest, so it will be good to get out there and do it again in a club setting. Devil Driver is always a great band to share the stage with and Kataklysm is one of the best death metal bands around today" enthuses Phipps "This tour is going to be an un-fucking-real diverse clash of heavy music... good times ahead!"

Kataklysm has posted the following message on their official band web site:
"Hello everyone! Well another year, another x-mas... good times for some and for others, just a pain in the ass... But whatever it represents for each one of you, we wish you the best for this holiday season with your loved ones. In 2006, we in Kataklysm have had a great year and it is because of you - the fans. It's not about how much money or how popular you get, it's about each one of you that comes to our shows and understands what's going on and give us that energy. You make this worth every minute. You belong with us and together we will conquer all because as you are our remedy, we are yours, we help each other. Music is the key for survival. Without it, emotions are lost, thoughts are distorted and feelings gone. We create music but you are our inspiration... Cheers to all of you!
"2007 brings forth new challenges for kataklysm and we start with our beloved Europe. We invite all of our fans to come to the kataklysmic devastation in January. We are prepared, join us..."

KATAKLYSM frontman Maurizio Iacono has checked in with the following tour update:
"So we are over a week into this Metal Crusaders tour in the States. The kick-off show in Montreal was phenomenal as always, Toronto was off the hook, New York was a sell-out and Chicago was loud as fuck. Seems like lots people have our new album and know all the new songs very well. KATAKLYSM is definitely growing rapidly in America. Loving the vibe on the tour. DESTRUCTION is a pleasure to watch every night, Italy's GRAVEWORM deliver a power punch performance and VADER kill!! All the bands get along and it's been a party, the soccer world cup will start on the 9th. Germany is playing Poland so there will be some competition on the tour buses between the VADER boys and DESTRUCTION. It's heating up!! I'll be cheering with GRAVEWORM for Italy… so far so good !"
KATAKLYSM plan to head back to Europe in the fall for a headlining tour in support of their critically acclaimed album "In the Arms of Devastation". More details will be made available soon.
