Devildriver Came, Cancer Bats Conquered

On a rainy Tuesday night in Vancouver, hundreds of metalheads lined the city's famed Granville street to catch the first Canadian stop in Devildriver's headline tour. If one thing is ever apparent about Vancouver and its metal fanatics, it is that they are one faithful bunch and are willing to put themselves through any amount of trouble to make it out to a metal show. Devildriver fans are especially rabid in this city and they had made the event a total sell out by the time doors were officially opened, as they have done for every other time Devildriver has rolled through our neck of the woods.

The tour, which features an all-Canadian supporting cast in Cancer Bats and Baptized in Blood, made its Vancouver stop at one of the city's more trendy dance clubs. The venue, which also happens to be named "Venue" of all things, mostly caters to a bar-hoping dance crowd and plays home to techno raves on most other nights. While the venue itself is nice and features an equal balance of floor space and upscale seating, it needs to be pointed out that the employees at Venue are some of the most insufferable people in the city and they really make it a point to take the douchebag factor to whole new levels. The employees were treating the metal fans in attendance that night like they were diseased third world prostitutes and made entry into the venue extremely difficult and lengthy, with many people being kept outside well into the start of the show; an hour after doors. To anyone thinking of attending a metal show at "Venue" in the future or to promoters looking to book a show in the city: only look to "Venue" as absolute last resort.

Despite the terrible start to the evening, Baptized in Blood took to the stage on time and looked to lighten the mood with its positive vibe and high energy performance. The crowd seemed to really enjoy the Ontario, Canada thrash act and did not hesitate to open the pit up early. Performing a rather short set, Baptized in Blood managed to cram all of the fan favorite tracks from its self-titled Roadrunner Records debut into the set with "Dirty's Back" being the lone highlight for me. Its hard to put a finger on what exactly it was, but the band just did not take an interest with me. The sound was great and each band member were very into its performance, but the music itself seemed to lack any punch as its set went on. Although for a young band that already has Megadeth's Dave Mustaine singing its praises the future is surely a bright one for this young thrash act. More...

Stray From The Path Comments On New Tour

Stray From The Path is embarking on an east coast U.S. tour today alongside Cancer Bats and The Chariot. Following the run, Stray From The Path will also head out on a stint of headlining shows. Tom (guitars) comments on the upcoming shows:

"We are very excited to be on tour with The Chariot and The Cancer Bats. We admire both bands very much as far as creativity, energy and both of their outstanding careers. Both bands have such an intense live show its going to be a huge privilege to see them every single night. As far as our show goes, you can expect a longer set, all from Make Your Own History. We will be playing almost the entire record on that tour. Also on this tour, we will be participating in the Toys For Tots program. It's is a program that is run by the United States Marine Corp that collects new, unwrapped toys during the holiday season and distributes them to needy families. Every December, we try to go to a Toys for Tots drive in New York City and donate toys for the kids. Since this year we will be on tour, we figured instead of missing that drive, we will do our own.

"The whole tour with The Chariot we will be accepting unwrapped, unopened toys for this drive and at the end of the tour, we will bring them to the Toys For Tots office in Garden City, New York. Every person that brings in an unwrapped and un-open toy will receive a raffle ticket for a free Stray From The Path shirt (that will be given away during our set) and a 1" Stray From The Path pin as a token of our appreciation for helping out. A lot of families are less fortunate during the holiday season, so it is up to us and to all of you to help make it special. More...

Metalcore Invades Baltimore on The Cool Tour

I recently got out to see the Cool Tour in Baltimore for a much-needed break. Featuring eight bands from every corner of the metalcore genre, one might be surprised to hear that this is the new tour by some of the Sounds of the Underground organizers, in it first year of the planned annual outing.

Let’s get one thing out of the way right away: With a name like “The Cool Tour” and a lineup full of metalcore bands, one might expect a bunch of straight/floppy haired teens in girl jeans as the audience. Luckily this was not the case, but it was clear that this tour is marketed to the younger and more trendy crowd. This was not your typical metal crowd, as short hair was the order of the day, but it was not what I expected either. While the name and first impressions might actually be a turn off to older and “true” metalheads, a closer look at the lineup reveals a few good reasons to check it out. I realized that if nothing else, headliners As I Lay Dying would put on a great show, and I also wanted to check out the much-hyped Between The Buried and Me as well as highly underrated Cancer Bats. If you are one who hates all things ‘core, don’t bother, however.

This was my second show at Sonar, and my impression of the venue since the first time was much improved. It seemed more organized and the security and staff were extremely helpful, the latter putting up with bands’ verbal jabs at them looking bored while encouraging the crowd to crowd surf to give them something to do.

While the entire venue was in use, the bands played only the main stage. Fortunately they had the process of switching bands down to a science and there was only a 10 to 15 minute gap between bands’ 30 minute sets for the most part.

Note: with a only passing familiarity with many of the bands, I am not able to name many songs or give set lists for this tour, even for the bands whose CDs I own. But read on for my account of the concert. More...
