Wardruna Signs To Indie Recordings

Indie Recordings recently announced the signing of Wardruna for the release of their debut album, "Runaljod - Gap Var Ginnunga," which is due out on January 19, 2009.

The idea of Wardruna began to take shape in 2002 as a project where founder and main man Einar Kvitrafn Selvik (Jotunspor, Gorgoroth, Sahg etc.) could work with a musical expression and instrumentation very different from what his involvements in various metal bands would allow. Naturally, it also became a place where his passion for and practice of Norse paganism and runes could be combined with music.

In the spring of 2007 the project started to attract attention after it was featured on the soundtrack of the much publicized "True Norwegian Black Metal" documentary about Gaahl (Trelldom, Gorgoroth etc.) by Peter Beste and Vice Films. Despite no releases or live appearances, Wardruna has since then gathered a respectable and perhaps surprisingly diverse following.

Now, after nearly six years in the making, the long awaited debut album of Wardruna is finally finished. It is the first album in the planned "Runaljod" trilogy, which will musically interpret the runes of the elder futhark. This highly visual music is hard to place into any specific genre. The style can perhaps be described as a curious blend of folk, world and ambient music, but without being limited by the sometimes restricted scope of these genres.

"Runaljod - gap var Ginnunga" has a very profound and unique sound that consist of a wide array of instruments, some of which are seldom used nowadays. A few examples include deer hide frame drums, mouth harp, goat horns, lur, Hardanger fiddle and tagelharpe ("Viking fiddle"). Sounds of more unorthodox "instruments" like trees, stones and fire are also incorporated into the music, and it's all topped off with powerful vocal performances from no less than three vocalists.

The album was produced and engineered by Kvitrafn himself in his own, aptly named, Fimbulljóð studio. Many of the recording sessions were executed outdoors at carefully selected locations with instruments or natural sounds that are relevant to the different runes.

The band's new label, Indie Recordings, comments: "Working with Wardruna has proven to be extremely rewarding, and their friendly and professional attitude is an example for others to follow. It is an honour for Indie Recording to have this special act on our roster, bringing depth and meaning to our catalogue by putting in context the very origin of Black Metal."

In a press statement the band comments the signing and the upcoming album:

"This is an ideal partnership for Wardruna; not only will the music be distributed and promoted in the manner it deserves, we also get to work with the fine people at Indie Recordings here in ....Norway..... They have proven themselves to be very professional and dedicated to their work and I am very pleased to be able to work with them and totally confident that this is the right label for Wardruna."

You can check out some of Wardruna's material on their MySpace page.

Sahg Reveal New Album Tracklisting

Norwegian metallers SAHG are gearing up for the release of their sophomore effort, appropriately dubbed, Sahg II, which is due out on March 18th via Regain.

The album (artwork pictured) will feature the following tracklisting: 'Ascent To Decadence', 'Echoes Ring Forever', 'From Conscious Sleep', 'Star-Crossed', 'Escape The Crimson Sun', 'Pyromancer', 'Wicked Temptress', 'By The Toll Of The Bell', 'Monomania'.

“This album is definitely a big step forward for us, both musically and technically/sound-wise,” commented guitarist/vocalist Olav Iversen. “The songs are more diverse on Sahg II because we have allowed ourselves to think more freely and be more receptive to a wider range of inspiration. There are so many directions we want to explore with this band, and this is just what we had time for in this round.”

While the band focused on learning from past mistakes, the recording process itself turned out to be a bit of a challenge for Sahg, with the recording studio being torn to the ground by the landlord after recording just three songs. Undeterred, they used a tiny rehearsal room as a temporary studio while seeking out another location. They soon settled at Audiopilot Studio in their native town of Bergen, Norway, a studio by the ocean, full of vintage guitar amps, effects, tape machines, and a Fender Rhodes piano. It was the perfect summer setting for Sahg to record. And then the technical problems started.

“It really felt like being under some vicious spell,” Iversen said. “But, finally, we landed it, with a bunch of pretty intense recordings in our hands that are very much colored by the strife and frustration we were in. All the hardship turned into something good.”

Sahg Ready New Album, "Sahg II"

Norway’s doom metal band Sahg, are set to unveil their latest masterpiece, the simply named “Sahg II,” on March 18 on Regain Records.

While the band’s 2006 debut, “Sahg I,” established the band as a force to be reckoned with in doom metal, “Sahg II” proves the band’s staying power. Taking inspiration from the forefathers of all things heavy – Black Sabbath – Sahg creates its own interpretation of retro, trippy, heavy music, based around memorable, ear-catching riffs.

“This album is definitely a big step forward for us, both musically and technically/sound-wise,” said guitarist/vocalist Olav Iversen. “The songs are more diverse on ‘Sahg II’ because we have allowed ourselves to think more freely and be more receptive to a wider range of inspiration. There are so many directions we want to explore with this band, and this is just what we had time for in this round.”

Dead To This World Choose Producer

Norwegian producer Bjørnar E Nielsen is to produce the new album from Black Metallers DEAD TO THIS WORLD. The album will be recorded at Nielsen’s Conclave Media Studios in Bergen.

Nielsen, who has produced albums by bands such as HELHEIM, SULPHUR, DEATHCON, AMPERA and VULTURE INDUSTRIES (of whom he is also a member), is currently building a new studio together with ENSLAVED members Herbrand Larsen and Arve Isdal. He is also working on material for a new album for his own band, BLACK HOLE GENERATOR.

DEAD TO THIS WORLD was originally founded by Iscariah (NECROPHAGIA, ex-IMMORTAL) as a solo project, but was expanded to a full line-up, releasing a three-track demo in 2005. Following the departure of their drummer, Iscariah recently announced that former GORGOROTH member Kvitrafn (SIGFADER, WARDRUNA, JOTUNSPOR, ex SAHG) would be joining the band to record the new album. Tracks from the original demo can be heard on the band’s MySpace page.

Manngard Enter The Studio

Norwegian extreme metallers MANNGARD entered Lydriket studios on March 15 to begin recording their as-yet-untitled sophomore album.

Commented the band: In the years that have passed since we originally released 'Circling Buzzards', we've all been busy in the metal field, it not necessarily keeping MANNGARD in the public eye at all times."

Vocalist Olav Iversen has seen major exposure and massive gigging activity with his doom outfit SAHG, also featuring members of AUDREY HORNE and GORGOROTH. Guitarist Olav Kristiseter has made his Norwegian debut as a novelist with "Blodlenka" (The Bloodchain), a morbid tale of Norwegian backwood monstrosity, largely based on the lyrical themes from "Circling Buzzards", as well as appearing on the JAZKAMER album "Metal Music Machine", alongside Ivar Bj?rnson and Iver Sandoy. Drummer Iver Sandoy has seen his services being utilized by ENSLAVED (the "Terje Vigen" movie project), more JAZKAMER recordings and gigs around Europe, and he is now also drumming for TRINACRIA, the new band featuring (among others) Ivar Bjornson, Grutle Kjellson and Arve "Ice Dale" Isdal of ENSLAVED.

While staying busy with other projects, MANNGARD has kept writing new material and fine-tuning it in rehearsals. Their considerable collective energy is now focused on the recording of the new MANNGARD album, which promises to be even more massive, twisted and evil than the debut.

King ov Hell Working On Project w/ Spitz, Jordison

He is working on a project with Joey Jordison, Dan Spitz and a few other famous musicians for a new project. Mr. King had to quit his role in Gorgoroth due to pressure from the school where he works as a teacher.

As previously reported, Peter Beste is making a short movie about lead singer Gaahl focusing on his extremly violent personality and his life as a father and artist. The movie will be broadcasted by MTV and will also appear on a Vice DVD with several other related segments. The first pressing of this DVD is 100,000 units, and will be distributed in all major music retailers in the US, and most in Europe.

Sahg In Writing Mode

Norwegian heavy rockers SAHG, featuring members of GORGOROTH, MANNGARD, and AUDREY HORNE, have issued the following update:

"SAHG is currently writing and rehearsing songs for the second album, which for the time being is due for release autumn 2007. The new material is quickly taking shape, and we plan to start recording already in January.

"We are most happy with the way the new material is turning out, and at the moment it looks like the album will contain an even wider variation than 'Sahg I', spanning from fast and propulsive, via slow and gloomy, to some experimental acoustic pieces. No songtitles or working title for the album yet, but this will be posted shortly."
