Sunday Old School: Whiplash

Back in the mid-eighties, I first stumbled upon New Jersey trio Whiplash when I worked at Roadrunner Records. The Passaic thrash band had just unleashed its 1985 debut "Power and Pain" and was doing the interview circuit. I called the band, asking if they could do a 15 second radio ID for my station. A week later, I received a tape from the band to convert to audio cart, which went like this: "This is Tony from Whiplash....and this is Tony from Whiplash...and this is Tony from Whiplash...and you're tuned to 88.7 FM."

That's right, all three of them were named Tony. This tale of three Tonys began in the early eighties in the tri-state area. Tony Bono, Tony Portaro and Tony J. Scaglione got together and released a series of four demos, channeling that New York sound into thrash. While the three were fans of Bay area thrash from the left-coast, they were also a product of their roots and went for that immediate, pulverizing sound that was so prevalent in their surroundings. The scene was in its zenith, and these guys put that metropolitan sound front and center - along with such bands as Ludichri$t, Crumbsuckers, Rest In Pieces and others. More...

Brooklyn Militia Recruits Glenn Hansen

Brooklyn Militia has recruited former Whiplash vocalist Glenn Hansen as the band's new singer. The new song 'Pumpkin Head' showcases the band with Hansen and gives just a small taste of the group's new sound. You can check out the song "Pumpkin Head" at the band's MySpace page here.

A full length CD and tour is to follow later this year. Glenn Hansen had this to say: "I guess it all comes down to honesty. Joe Cangelsoi Discusses New Band Brooklyn Militia

Original Trouble drummer and Retro Grave mainman Jeff "Oly" Olson recently conducted an interview with Brooklyn Militia drummer Joe Cangelsoi (Ex-Whiplash, Kreator) for the "Heady Metal With Jeff Olson" radio show. The two part podcast is now available in its entirety at this location. A couple of excerpts from the chat follow below.

Cangelosi on recent departure of Whiplash:

"I'm happy I've got a band (Brooklyn Militia) together now. You know I've put so much work into Whiplash and I want to thank all the fans out there. I've met a lot of contacts and so many cool people everywhere. I'll never forget it.

"I'm just going to continue on with my own thing, but it (Whiplash) was a strange situation. From out of the blue I got a call from Tony (Portaro) saying that he's getting Scaglione back in the band. There was no falling out or anything... I figure it's not my choice. Whatever. I'm shocked, but whatever. I see now that Scaglione is out of the band..."

Cangelosi on new band Brooklyn Militia:

"Brooklyn Mitilia was formed about maybe eight months ago and this was at the time that me and Rich Day were still in Whiplash. There were some personal things going on in the band where we couldn't play and we had to wait. Basically, me and Richie were left waiting around and we're like, let's keep playing and do something...

"We hooked up with Paul Bento. Paul is from Carnivore. He's a killer musician. He plays sitar fluently and he did some sitar and guitar work on some of the Type O Negative records... The last Whiplash record was called 'Unborn Again' and we did a Montrose cover called 'Ive Got The Fire' and Paul use to come up on stage and play that with us. We then started writing songs together... so that's how we met and how Brooklyn Militia happened. Now we're in it to win it."

Whiplash Parts With Drummer, Announces Replacement

New Jersey based thrash metal veterans Whiplash have announced that they have parted ways with original drummer Tony Scaglione. Replacing him behind the drum stool will be Dan Foord, best known as the drummer from British extreme metal outfit Sikth.

Frontman Tony Portaro commented: "Tony and I were really looking forward to working together once again, but unfortunately there are personal issues in his life that arose which take priority. Fortunately, I was able to contact Dan Foord with the help of Ben Ward of Orange Goblin and Nathan Perrier of Alabaster Suns, Labrat and Capricorns. Dan is well-schooled and plays with exceptional technique. Dank and I are working together feverishly and are very much looking forward to performing live with him in the near future. We are expecting the crowds to share the adrenaline rush as we eagerly anticipate this year's live shows."
