70,000 Tons Of Metal Lineup Closer To Complete

The 2016 installment of 70,000 Tons of Metal is about to set sail next Thursday, and promoters UMC are inching closer to completing the lineup - the latest addition is Dave Lombardo (ex-Slayer)'s new act Dead Cross.

Other additions include: Abinchova, Painful, Twilight Force, Skálmöld, Raven, Koyi K Utho, Dia De Los Muertos, Distillator and Susperia.

70,000 Tons of Metal 2016 will set sail from February 4th-8th from Ft. Lauderdale, Florida and return to Jamaica with a stop at Falmouth. You can still book your tickets using the link a few paragraphs down.

The festival will board a new vessel, the second in as many years: The Independence of the Seas (via Royal Caribbean). The ship will accommodate four stages: The Alhambra Theater is a five-story concert hall in which they spare no expense to remove part of the (very comfortable) seating so you have a real Mosh Pit on the High Seas; The more intimate Egyptian themed Pyramid Lounge offers the local club atmosphere; The third indoor stage is in Studio B, the ice skating rink featuring a maritime version of the Arena experience and last but not least their jewel: The Pool Deck stage - The World’s Biggest Open Air Stage Structure to ever sail the Open Seas, surrounded by multiple bars and pools, plenty of room to sunbathe on several decks and even hot tubs incorporated into the Pool Deck stage to soak in while you watch the shows!

The All-Star Jam band, which returned this past January will also be back, led by Annihilator's Jeff Waters and members from the various acts aboard performing cover tunes live. Also, the ship will broadcast the upcoming Super Bowl between the Carolina Panthers v. Denver Broncos live on Sunday, February 7, 2016.

Ticket prices include all on board entertainment, most non-alcoholic and non-carbonated beverages, all meals in the dining rooms, most on board restaurants and even 24 hour room service. For more information or to book your high seas metal adventure, head on over to 70000tons.com.

Metal Underground.com will be on board for the cruise and will provide coverage in the form of daily show reports, photo galleries and a four part video series featuring performance clips and other antics from each day.

Belphegor Comments On Upcoming Album

Belphegor began new rehearsal sessions for an upcoming album yesterday in Abtenau, Salzburg (Austria). Front man Helmuth Lehner commented:

"Magnificent nature covered in snow that has arrived in the mountains with -11 degrees [12 ºF] here and we're freezing our asses off. Just perfect for creating brutal sound collages. With this currently untitled album we will try to develop and bring everything to a new level, since I have the feeling this is the strongest recording line-up we've ever had. Regards to blood brother Barth Resch for the photo shoot."

The upcoming album is currently scheduled for a late 2016 / early 2017 release. Belphegor's new project will commence two-and-a-half years after the "Conjuring The Dead" album, which was released via Nuclear Blast records in August 2014. More...

Bloodstock Confirms New 2015 Bands

While everyone’s talking about Christmas approaching, the Bloodstock festival organizer's sights are firmly fixed on next August. What better way to roll into the festive season than to announce three more crackin’ bands for 2015’s premier heavy metal event?

First up is thrash outfit Overkill. Front man Bobby ‘Blitz’ Ellsworth says: “We are loading the BIG guns and setting sail for the UK this summer! Be warned! The island is in danger, it's a White Devil Army....Lets make Bloodstock 2015 a bloodbath!”

Belphegor Cancels North American Tour

Due to a family emergency, Austria’s diabolical death / black metal band Belphegor has been forced to cancel the planned headlining North American “Voices From The Dark” tour with Rotting Christ, Beheaded, and Svart Crown.

The tour was scheduled to launch September 24th in New York City. Belphegor front man & guitarist Helmuth Lehner issued the following statement:

"After fighting many months now (the last 4 months have been terrible), my mother is at the end. Her body is decaying more and more and will not survive the next weeks (maybe days) or will fall in coma soon. I will not risk being away at this time."

None of the other bands have issued a statement yet, so it's unclear if they will continue the tour or if the entire trek is off with the headlining band cancelling.

Update: Rotting Christ has now confirmed the tour is fully cancelled, stating: "As Rotting Christ we have no other choice than supporting Helmuth's family situation and to express simultaneously our deep disappointment with the fact that we will not meet our Northern American Metal brothers as we promised them with this tour. We promise though that we will work our asses off to be back in your land ASAP so stay tuned for updates." More...

Sunday Old School: Belphegor

As we’ve mentioned a few times over the past months, this year Sunday Old School is aiming to cover a lot more countries in our articles. Some of the nations we’ve taken a first look at have given the world of metal some highly controversial names, both literately (such as Rotting Christ from Greece) and in terms of theatrics (such as Poland’s, Behemoth.) This week sees the latter trend continue, as Sunday Old School examines a band from Austria for the first time. A blood drenched, blasphemous, outrageous group that goes by the name of, Belphegor.

The group was formed under the moniker Betrayer in Salzburg in 1991 by guitarist, Helmuth and Sigurd, vocalist Maxx and a drummer named Chris. Whilst using this name, they recorded two demos, "Kruzifixion" and "Unborn Blood," before changing their alias to Belphegor, named after a demon who was supposedly responsible for discoveries and, according to the Dictionnaire Infernal, Hell’s ambassador to France (because if anywhere is going to have an embassy for Hell, it’s France.) They would release only one demo with Maxx after changing their name in the guise of 1993’s, "Bloodbath in Paradise." After Maxx’s departure, Helmuth assumed vocal duties and the group recorded another demo, "Obscure and Deep" through Perverted Taste Records in 1994, before their first official album, "The Last Supper" was released in January 1995 via Lethal Records.
