In the Fall of 2000, five powerhouse musicians, tired of mediocre music and mundane melodies, formed to bring passion back to their Genre. In their nearly six years of brotherhood, EKOTREN has definitely seen their share of ups and downs: From the closing of nearly ALL of the venues in their town, to the loss of beloved band mates. Determined to succeed, Guitarist Keith Finnell, Bassist Sean Fiene, and DJ/Keyboardist Steve Chin pulled tighter with Vocalist, John Sheldon to push forward in their musical journey. In late 2005, after the coming and going of two drummers, EKOTREN finally solidified with the presence of Eric Pottle. With this edition, the group has really embraced their ever increasing songwriting ability and raw energy. Today, EKOTREN can be found in some of Florida's Greatest Rock Venues, promoting their new EP "The Tables Have Turned" in their 2006 tour.
Ekotren Interviews and Features
Below are our features and interviews with Ekotren.
Cape Coral, Florida's EKOTREN has had one of the most successful year's in recent memory for a metal act made up of all twenty-one year olds. They have been touring the lights out of their Florida area scene in support of their debut EP 'The Tables Have Turned' and are getting ready to enter the studio for the recording of their first full length effort. I had a lot of fun conducting this interview with their band manager, Eddie of The Edge Factory and the entire Ekotren band. They are guitarist Keith Finnell, bassist Sean Fiene, Eric Pottle on drums, DJ/keyboardist Steve Chin and vocalist John Sheldon.
There really aren't any underground metal bands on the scene today made up mostly of twenty-one year olds that are making any kind of serious impression today. Cape Coral, Florida's EKOTREN is an exception. Scratch that, a major exception. With a recent successful performance on Van's Warped Tour 2006 and an increasing following picking up steam in the local clubs of Florida, Ekotren seems to really be holding their own against the crowds of band competition. They have also recently self-released their debut EP 'The Tables Have Turned', which this rock journalist gave an overwhelming 'thumbs up' in review. It's really turned into quite a year for this bunch. With as crazy as things have been going for them, I am pleased to have gotten some questions in with their talented man on the keys, Steve Chin. Cape Coral, Florida's unsigned dynamo, Ekotren, unleashed a firebrand performance on June 25, 2006 at the latest installment of the venerable Vans Warped Tour in Orlando Florida, clearly provideing the harshest of musical critics with all the proof they need to assess that this is a group of young musicians who are now clearly on their way to making a breakthrough in a metal genre that has seen it all before. Well, almost everything. They haven’t seen Ekotren.
“I dont know if fame and fortune is where we are going. If it comes, it comes. Both of those are not things that drive us. We are shooting for success, and if those come, then they come. But I don’t see them affecting us or our music. We live music and there is truly nothing I see getting in the way of us doing what we do,” offers Ekotren’s lead guitarist, Keith Finnell.
Now, that’s some true Rock N Roll spirit.
Initially founded in the Fall of 2000, Ekotren are passionate young artists that strive to put out a positive life message through their freshly offered hook-laden, melody driven songs. After having the usual band member shuffle occur, the band consists now of its most potent lineup to date with guitarist Keith Finnell, bassist Sean Fiene, Eric Pottle on drums, DJ/keyboardist Steve Chin and vocalist John Sheldon.
And while they certainly shoot more into the realm of Linkin Park's all out pop metal approach at times, this is a heavy music band that certainly offers its fair share of deep, brutal themes and a maturity level well beyond its years.
From the recent metalunderground.com review of their debut EP “The Tables Have Turned”:
"The Tables Have Turned," an independently released debut album from Cape Coral, Florida’s Ekotren is flat out one of metal music’s most original and fresh sounding recording’s for 2006. In a year that has seen the once darker themed Korn lose all its edge and every old thrash or speed metal group from the 80-90’s dusted off and put back on the road and into the studio for more of nothing new, Ekotren has thrown its hat into the ring with a simply smashing collection of seven radio-friendly but extremely, provocative-themed songs.”
No one can deny that the stage is set for Ekotren to take it to the next level.
I got some Q&A in recently with their drummer, Eric Pottle.
In the Fall of 2000, five young and hungry musicians out of Cape Coral, Florida formed as Ekotren, in an all-out pursuit to bring passion back to the game of metal. They have hung in tough and really started to make a name for themselves on their local club scene and now are scheduled in a short time to unleash their self-released debut album, entitled The Tables Have Turned. I have thoroughly enjoyed all the work I have done with this band up to this time, for it's rare to find such a talented bunch that are as well mannered and respectful as I have found Ekotren to be. I had some questions answered recently by their bassist, Sean Fiene. More...

And while they certainly shoot more into the realm of Linkin Park's all out pop metal approach at times, this is a heavy music band that has loads of talent and so many years ahead to fully define itself , and it's really only the members themselves who know what is in store for the rest of us. I recently was able to shoot some questions at their guitarist, Keith Finnell. More...
