Machine Head burst onto the 90's metal scene serving up 80's style thrash with a contemporary sound that some would even venture to call nu-metal. With former Vio-lence bandmember Rob Flynn handling guitars and vocals, Logan Mader on lead guitars, Adam Duce on bass and Chris Kontos on drums, the band released 'Burn My Eyes' to much critical acclaim. The album became a landmark release for the band and that decade in metal.
Machine Head's lineup would see a few members come and go, and eventually Vio-lence's Phil Demmel would end up back with bandmate Rob Flynn after filling in on guitar on tour for a while.
The band followed up 'Burn My Eyes' with solid sophomore release of 'The More Things Change'. 'The Burning Red', the band's third release, took on a decidely more nu-metal feel. Their fourth release, 'Supercharger', took it a step further, seemingly trying to make that sound more accessible to the masses with Rob singing on certain songs and the overall tempo slower and less heavy than previous releases.
In 2002, the band split with US label Roadrunner Records. Eventually, Machine Head and Roadrunner US worked out their differences and 'Through The Ashes of Empires' was released in the US in 2004, almost 6 months after the European release. The album still charted at #88 on Billboard's albums chart, moving more than 11,000 copies in its first week. While not neccessarily a return to form per se, TTAOE had a much heavier and aggessive sound, while still incorporating many elements of the band's sound as it had evolved over the years.

Guitarist and vocalist Robb Flynn checked in from the road via Machine Head's Tour Diary:
The world loves that “Bay Area Crunch”...GOD DAMN!!!!
I mean, fuckin’ WOW!!!
HOW 'BOUT IT?!?! The Head are the 1st Bay Area "metal" band in the top ANYTHING in probably the last 10 friggin' years, let alone the top 12, 20, 30, 50 of the music charts across the world?!?! Howa-bout-it... The Bay is back on the map!
#54 on the U.S. Billboard charts...?! That’s the highest U.S. charting we've ever had by a long shot, and about 30% more sales than almost every other MH record released in the US including BME, TMTC, SC and TTAOE. Everywhere else in the world, "The Blackening" was hands-down our biggest 1st-week seller EVER... in the HISTORY of the band!!
And to have the biggest 1st-week sales / highest chartings in the history of the friggin' band... in every country throughout the world... with no video being aired... no "single" at radio... on our 6th friggin' album... which opens with a friggin' 10 1/2 minute song?!?! Well, dear Head-Cases, life is pretty fuckin' sweet! And supposedly the record industry is in a slump?! Shiiiiit, all things considered, things in Machine Head-land are goin' pretty fuckin’ good man. Head-Cases, you motherfuckers went out there and made a HUUUUUUUUUUUUUGE statement to the world... seriously... I’m not gonna get too brainiac on it, whatever it is...WHAT - EVER it is...YOU - KICK - FUCKING - ASS!!!
And don’t stop now!! Keep spreading the word!!
On a different note, for the "collectors" out there, I was recently made aware of a couple of misprints on the 1st pressing of "The Blackening". On the U.S., International, and 'bonus' versions there is a small glitch on the cover, where somehow the 2 "squiggles" on either side of the album title "gained" a white patch under the bottom 'lip' of each squiggle... apparently a fuck-up by the film separator. All other art (stickers, shirts, posters, ads) have the correct art (if you wanna compare) and all future editions will have the correct cover art. In addition, but limited to just the U.S. version, a mastering credit didn't appear because of timing issues / art deadlines before that final mastering happened (done by the king Eddy Schreyer). All other international formats were able to include the correct mastering credit, however, so this will only need to be corrected for future pressings of the U.S. disc. All little shit no doubt, but cool stuff in case any of you are interested in that kinda stuff. As a collector dork myself, I can relate.
Aesthetics video shoot turned out sweet, very "community" heavy in theme, just a real raw, rugged, street video, very stoked to see the final edit.
LOG tour is over... fuckin' crazy... tour went by SO fast, I can't believe it's been 8 weeks!!! It was amazing, we couldn't have asked to have been on a better tour to set up what will no doubt be an incredible run for us. A loud ass "Cheers Fuckers!" to the Lamb Of God camp and crew, the Trivium's and Gojira's for making this one of the best tours we've EVER been a part of.
Altitude TV's "Metalology 101" has posted an exclusive interview with GOJIRA frontman Joe Duplantier from the band's recent appearance on tour in Los Angeles with Lamb of God, Trivium and Machine Head. Host Possum asks Joe about the French metal scene, how GOJIRA has enjoyed touring North America and some of Joe's favorite aspects and people from America. Check out the entire interview online here.
GOJIRA is playing the final date of the current tour tonight in Cincinatti before heading to the UK for a brief tour of the country with Trivium. The band is continuing to support the band's first proper North American release, From Mars To Sirius, which saw an August 2006 release through Prosthetic Records.
Trivium guitarist Corey Beaulieu has checked in after returning from touring with Lamb of God. Here's what he had to say:
"We’ve been home for a couple days getting our shit together before heading off to Ireland to start our European and UK headlining The Crusade World Tour 2007 along with very special guests and thrash kings Annihilator with our friends Gojira and Sanctity.
"Would like to thank everyone who came out to see the Lamb of God tour, we had a blast! The guys in LOG treated us great and were super cool guys to tour with , they killed it every night! It was a great pleasure to be back on the road with our good friends in Machine Head we had many nights of drinking with those guys and can’t wait to tour with them again, hopefully very soon! Our last day of the tour was in Ft. Lauderdale and besides an amazing show it was also Phil’s birthday so we went out with a bash!! (happy bday phil). The dudes in Gojira were awesome and looking forward to seeing them again in a few days overseas for another few weeks of metal mayhem.
"We are really stoked to be coming back over and playing for all over fans overseas. Everyone in Ireland and the Uk will be getting our biggest stage show we have done to date so you are in for a treat. If you haven’t picked up a ticket yet def do before they are all gone ‘cause it will def be a killer show.
"We will be playing a lot of songs from all the records so it will be a good mix for everyone to enjoy!
"I would also like give a big shout out to our message board and Myspace regulars admins’s, mod’s we do read as much of your mail as we can and appreciate all the comments, pictures, videos of some of you have created covering our music as a band or just jamming on a Dean, fan art – its all fucking great and keep it coming we love it and thanks to everyone who has came out to the shows and has picked up The Crusade; we appreciate your support and love you for everything! ‘cant wait to bring the metal to your town and have a great night of thrashing out.
"See you soon and Thanks again!! Corey"
Last week on Monday, March 26, I had the chance to get out to DC's 9:30 Club to see Lamb of God's Sacrament Tour with Trivium, Machine Head and Gojira as support. This year has been chock full of amazing tours and doesn't look to be letting up. This concert was the third sold out show in a row I've seen at the 9:30 Club, which has a capacity of over 1300 people. I was amazed upon my arrival just after 7:15 that the place was already filled to about three quarters capacity and the smell of hot, sweaty bodies already filled the air. More...

In other news, Machine Head frontman Robert Flynn has issued the following update about the first video and single off "The Blackening" as well as a reissue of "Burn My Eyes":
"Gotta couple of new developments going on in the camp. We have decided that we will not be releasing the video for 'Now I Lay Thee Down' as the first video off of 'The Blackening', the main reasoning being that we want to come out with a harder track for the first video. We came out with 'Davidian' off 'Burn My Eyes', we came with 'Ten Ton Hammer' off 'The More Things Change', we came with 'Imperium' off 'Through the Ashes of Empires'... and we feel we need to come out swinging with 'The Blackening'. It felt weird coming with a more melodic track as the first video, so us and Roadrunner spoke and thankfully they agreed, so we will be shooting another video. We would LOVE to shoot a proper video for the opening track 'Clenching the Fists of Dissent, but we are completely conundrummed about how to shorten our 10-minute-and-34-second megalithic opener down to 5 minutes without having to remove entire sections at a time, or worse, edit them down to 20 second pieces (but hey, any suggestions are welcome). So, our most likely candidate is 'Aesthetics of Hate', and we may shoot it as early as this week. It's unfortunate that we won't have a video to coincide with the release, especially since in Europe the video market is much stronger than in America, but if that's the only hiccup we encounter for this album's release, then we're WAY ahead of the 'hiccups' we had with the last one.
"Super stoked to be going out on the HEAVEN AND HELL tour in America; for those of you living under a rock, that's BLACK SABBATH with the mighty Ronnie James Dio on vocals, who recorded some of the best songs in all of metal. MEGADETH is also on the bill which is fuckin' killer, those two bands are the reason there's a MACHINE HEAD, and we are honored to be a part of it. This is gonna be all about paying homage to The Masters.
"To the best of our knowledge, the 'Burn My Eyes' re-release that was supposed to have coincided with the 25th anniversary of Roadrunner Records back in 2005 and was then re-scheduled to be released in October 2006, has been back-burnered. And as far as we're concerned, that's a good thing. This is the year of 'The Blackening', and the time frame to re-release it has passed, not to mention that the idea of re-releasing a 13-year old album that we already celebrated with two anniversary shows (three years ago) makes zero sense to us. We were never excited about reissuing it to begin with, as it was just gonna have a bunch of b-sides, and wouldn't have been nearly as cool some of the other re-issues that had DVDs and all sorts of cool shit... so, as much as some of you may be bummed, know that it's better this way.
Gutworm have issued the following update via the AntiCulture Records website:
We're happy to announce that our long awaited second album, Disfigured Narcissus will be recorded at Priory Recording Studios during March / April and will be released this September. I know what you're thinking... "about bloody time!" We're not lazy, we just didn't want to rush it! This will be new bassist Glen Pywell's debut recording with us after several months hard work, both in the practice room and on the road. Greg Chandler (Esoteric) will be producing once again so expect a killer result!! Oh yeah, dont forget about us at this year's Hellfest along with our label-mates Slit & Interlock. Bands confirmed so far include Korn, Machine Head, Lamb Of God, Cannibal Corpse, Megadeth, Napalm Death plus MANY more!! Check out the official Hellfest website at www.hellfest.fr or the Myspace page. We'll be playing 2 other shows while in France, but we'll talk about those another time. Thats it for now but keep your eyes peeled, there's loadsa GW news coming up in the next couple of months.
See ya - Mr Minney
Dream Theater confirmed today that they'll be playing UK's Download 2007. Dream Theater drummer Mike Portnoy can't wait: "Fuck yeah! It's about time!!! I am absolutely stoked for Dream Theater to finally play Download... In a career already filled with so many personal achievements and dreams having been realized, somehow an invitation to play Download or Donington has always eluded us thus far... After all our hard work for the past 21 years and having made so many fans and friends in the U.K., it's nice to finally get the invitation! This gig will come within the first month of a world tour that will last well into 2008 for us, but I can already predict this will be one of the highlights of the year for us..."

LiveDaily.com reports: Heaven and Hell--featuring two founding members of Black Sabbath along with interim Sabbath vocalist Ronnie James Dio and former Sabbath drummer Vinnie Appice--have announced dates for an inaugural US tour this spring.
Original Sabbath drummer Bill Ward, who was originally announced as being part of the reunion, has been replaced by Appice, who joined the group for a brief stretch in the early '80s and appeared on two of the group's albums.
The US dates follow the band's earlier announcement of a March trek through Canada, ending with a March 30 one-off at New York's Radio City Music Hall, a date which sold out in a "matter of minutes," according to the group's publicist.
The new dates kick off April 22 in Phoenix and will see the group canvas 20 cities across the country, starting off on the West Coast and slowly moving eastward. Tickets go on sale to the public March 9, except for the May 2 Houston date, which will go on sale March 17. A special fan presale for all dates will take place Wednesday (3/7) beginning at noon EST. More information on the presale can be obtained at a special website set up by the group.
Opening support for the trek will include fellow metal icons Megadeth, who will preview material from their forthcoming new album, "United Abominations," due in stores May 8. Additional support will come from Machine Head, backing its new album, "The Blackening," which is set for a March 27 release.

Robert Flynn, Machine Head frontman is set to finish his vocals for an as-yet-untitled new song, which is to be used as a bonus track/b-side in correlation with the band’s forthcoming sixth studio album ‘The Blackening’
‘Aesthetics of Hate’ is a new song available for download from this location. The track which is taken from ‘The Blackening’ was inspired by an article written by William Grim, labelled "Aesthetics of Hate: R.I.P. Dimebag Abbott, & Good Riddance", Robert Flynn said of the article:
"It basically said that Dime was untalented and that he reaped what he sowed," Flynn told MTV.com about the article. (Grim called Abbott "an ignorant, barbaric, untalented possessor of a guitar" who looks "more simian than human" and "part of a generation that has confused sputum with art and involuntary reflex actions with emotion"). "It's one thing to have an opinion about an artist, but the thing that was the most offensive to me was how it then went on to cast this huge generalization over the metal community, calling us pathetic for mourning his death. He called us all ugly and fat. I wanted to punch the fucking computer screen when I read that article."
Robert Flynn will be appearing on Bruce Dickinson’s BBC Radio 6 show, ‘Rock Show’ on 24th Feburary, you can listen online to the program live between 9:00 p.m. and 12:00 a.m. (midnight) U.K. at BBC.co.uk.
"The Blackening" final track listing follows:
01. Clenching the Fists of Dissent
02. Beautiful Mourning
03. Aesthetics of Hate
04. Now I Lay Thee Down
08. A Farewell to Arms

Dave McClain checked in from the band's website.
Happy New Year to everybody!! Looking forward to getting back on the road and unleashing the new album on everyone! Everything is finally coming together. Artwork and CD booklet getting finalized, mastering is complete and preparations for the Lamb Of God tour are underway!!
I started practicing today by myself and getting in "show shape". I practice a lot on my own but today I started playing like I would if we were doing a show, just basically hitting a lot harder and running through a lot of songs back to back. A good day of practicing, I already feel like I'm in "mid tour" form. So, about three songs into playing, I feel some blisters start to form. I was going to put some tape around them just to keep them from popping and ripping open but I kept playing on and two songs later I actually got to see two chunks fly off my hand!!! Yes!! I hardly ever get to see them fly off. My lucky day I guess!
Anyway, back to the tour.
I've never seen Gojira before but heard some of the their stuff and heard that they're a killer live band.
Of course we already know the Trivium guys really well and have crossed paths a few times. Hmmmm, I see booze in our future!!
I can safely say that Lamb Of God are one of my favorite metal bands. Killer riffs, great musicians and after doing some shows with them and coming out to a few on our own and hanging out with them, I can also say that they're cool people as well. Really looking forward to watching Chris play every night. I see more booze in our future!
That's about it. See ya on the road!!
