Scott Ian Talks Live DVDs

Get ready to mosh in the privacy of your own home, because Anthrax will release the live concert DVD "Chile On Hell" on October 17th (Europe). "Chile On Hell" was filmed at the Teatro Caupolican in Santiago, Chile on May 10th, 2013 and features Anthraxperforming an extended set that featured songs from the band's entire catalog.

Nuclear Blast decided to quiz Scott Ian about the release at this year's Sonisphere Festival, as well as aski him what some of his favoritelive DVDs are. Check out that interview below.

"Santiago was the perfect place to film the show for this," says Anthrax drummer Charlie Benante. "When we'd played there in the past, we'd finish our set, play our encore and go back to the dressing room. But every time, the fans would continue to scream and cheer and clap. I mean, they went on and on, they wouldn't stop. One time Scott [Ian, guitar] and I walked out to the side of the stage just to watch what was going on in the audience, it was intense. Why wouldn't we want to film a DVD in front of an audience like that?"

"Plus," Benante continued, "the time was right to do this DVD… We wanted to finish on a high note. We didn't want to look back and regret that we didn't record the live show." More...

Motorhead Announces Motorboat On-Board Activities

The first annual Motörhead Motörboat - featuring Megadeth, Motörhead, and Anthrax -will sail from Miami, visiting the ports of Key West, Florida and Cozumel just off Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula for the September 22nd - 26th, 2014 cruise on the Carnival Ecstasy.

The fest will also include Testament, Down, High On Fire, plus Kill Devil Hill, Zakk Wylde, Jim Breuer Band, Danko Jones, Fireball Ministry, and Wilson. While onboard, guests will have a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to interact with band members and will see unforgettable performances on various stages throughout the ship.

A limited number of cabins are still available for Motörhead’s Motörboat at this location.

Additional onboard performances and activities have been announced for Motörhead’s Motörboat, including a spoken word performance by heavy metal musician, author, and television personality Scott Ian.

Scott’s spoken word performances in support of his upcoming "Swearing Words In Glasgow" CD (out November 13th via Megaforce Records) are an honest look at the insane life that he has led for the last 31 years, the people he’s met, and the events that coincide. After decades-worth of international touring with Anthrax, bumping elbows with illustrious (and sometimes ridiculous) characters all over the media spectrum, and undergoing general “you won’t believe this” experiences, Scott certainly has some hilarious and surprisingly personal stories to share.

Those onboard Motörhead’s Motörboat will also be treated to a screening of the 2010 documentary film "Lemmy," directed by Greg Olliver and Wes Orshoski. In addition, theme nights for Motörhead’s Motörboat are as follows:

Monday, September 22 -- Löud and Hometown Pröud

Motörhead’s Motörboat will have a very diverse and international crowd. Guests are encouraged to be proud of where they come from. Wear a state jersey, don your Nordic horns, paint your face and show your city/state/country pride. More...

Roundtrip To Hel, Part II

[Continued from Part I]

SATURDAY, 6/28 - 13:30

“That’s a killer e-cig; where’d you pick it up?”

Actually, the stranger on the bus doesn’t say that. At least not in English. And judging from his condescending glare from a row up and across the aisle, I’m thinking he doesn’t approve.

I exhale the last puff of vapor toward the ceiling and shrug uncomfortably.

Rachel exchanges a few words with him, nudges me on the shoulder. “He’s definitely not from here - I can’t recognize his accent - but he says you’re not allowed to do that on the bus.”

“If he’s not from here, why’s he lecturing other people on the rules?” I shoot the man a neutral nod. “This stuff isn’t affecting him.” Still, I put it away. Some people, man. Busybodies.

Through my vest pocket, I finger the boxy outline of the pack of Marlboro Reds I bought last night after I caved. Post-Dimmu, our gearing-down at Nikky’s place a few blocks away became a relaxed, languid, drawn-out gab session, leading us to miss the afterparty band, Amorphis. For shame. Harakiri shame.

Instead, we ended up at PRKL, another rock club, well after midnight. After buying the pack and stepping outside to smoke one, I nearly got myself flattened by a passing street tram. That was probably some kind of sign. More...

Anthrax Drummer Takes Ice Bucket Challenge

On August 18th, when Anthrax headlined the Rock Al Parquet 2014 Festival in Bogota, Colombia, the band's drummer Charlie Benate took the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge - in front of more than 140,000 screaming fans. Footage can be seen below.

Mike Portnoy had challenged Charlie, and he accepted, in large part because Mike Wright, the father of his friend Brandon Wright, has had ALS for 10 years - so this was personal.

Bandmates Joey Belladonna and Frank Bello did the dousing, and afterwards Charlie nominated Philip H. Anselmo, Sepultura's Andreas Kisser and music producer Jay Ruston, who produced Anthrax's "Worship Music." Anthrax's live DVD, "Chile On Hell," will be released on September 16th. More...

Halfway To Insanity: How The Ramones Changed Metal

Last Friday, the only remaining original carrier of the most influential name in rock music sadly left us.

Tommy Ramone, the last original member of the Ramones, was the sole survivor of the legendary quartet for ten years following the passing of guitarist Johnny Ramone in September 2004 and with no original members left alive, the Ramones will now be consigned to folklore.

They didn’t sell as many records as the Rolling Stones, open the listeners minds to new concepts like the Beatles, or even reach the big arenas in their home country, but the Ramones changed the face of rock and roll forever, somewhat literally in fact, as their uniform of denim of leather would become adopted by metal fans not even five years after they released their self-titled debut. This was just one of the ways that these four young Stooges fans would influence the music they were accused of trying to replicate.

The most important thing about any band should always be the music, and this where the Ramones helped to change things the most. Spectators of their earliest concerts in CBGB’s recall a constant barrage of noise, an assault on the eardrums without the musicians on stage giving an ounce of a fuck what the audience thought. A description fit for heavy metal if ever there was one. Of course, the first people to use the Ramones as a template for their bands were many of the young punks in Britain, a place where the band would sell out every time, in larger venues than the ones back home too. The Clash, The Damned and Stiff Little Fingers are just a few of the time who adored the Queens quartet and the DIY ethics they espoused helped bring metal back to street level when the New Wave of British Heavy Metal came along, an early fusion of punk rock and the earlier heavy metal such as Budgie, Judas Priest and Van Halen.

A number of the NWOBHM artists cite the Ramones as an influence, including former Iron Maiden frontman, Paul Di’anno, who in an interview for the bonus disc of his album, "The Living Dead," referred to Joey Ramone as the most recognisable voice in rock. Early recordings of the bands live shows, and indeed the ferocious speed they brought to the recording studio, certainly showcase what could be regarded as an early form of thrash metal. The break neck speed, chainsaw guitar and confrontational vocals fit into any playlist alongside the likes of Exodus or Vio-Lence and before long, several recognised names in the thrash genre such as Metallica, Rigor Mortis, Ratos de Porao and Anthrax would cover their songs, not to mention the band being honoured by another forbearer of thrash, Motorhead in their song, "R.A.M.O.N.E.S." Anthrax To Release "Chile On Hell" DVD

Get ready to mosh in the privacy of your own home, because Anthrax has announced the release of "Chile On Hell," a live-in-concert DVD that is set for a September 16th release.

"Chile On Hell" was filmed at the Teatro Caupolican in Santiago, Chile on May 10th, 2013. The band performed an extended set that featured songs from Anthrax's entire catalogue, including fan-favorites "I Am The Law," "Indians," "Madhouse," "Caught In A Mosh," "The Devil You Know," and "I'm Alive."

"Chile On Hell" will be available on DVD and Blu-Ray, was recorded in 5.1 Surround Sound, and will retail for $16.98.

"Santiago was the perfect place to film the show for this," said Anthrax's Charlie Benante. "When we'd played there in the past, we'd finish our set, play our encore and go back to the dressing room. But every time, the fans would continue to scream and cheer and clap. I mean, they went on and on, they wouldn't stop. One time Scott and I walked out to the side of the stage just to watch what was going on in the audience, it was intense. Why wouldn't we want to film a DVD in front of an audience like that?

"Plus," Benante continued, the time was right to do this DVD." The band was in the home stretch of a three year campaign to record and support "Worship Music" and the "Anthems" EP, a period of time that was loaded with high points: the return of "classic era" vocalist Joey Belladonna, "Worship Music" making the band's highest chart debut in two decades, the series of Big Four shows, two Grammy nominations, and sold out shows in every corner of the globe. "We wanted to finish on a high note," Benante continued, "we didn't want to look back and regret that we didn't record the live show."

"Chile On Hell" was produced by Jay Ruston and filmed by City Drive Entertainment Group and DC3 Global. The DVD's cover art was designed by Stephen Thompson who partnered with Benante to redesign the artwork from last year's "Anthems" EP. More...

"Speaking Words isn’t just a hilariously raucous story-telling experience, but an honest look at the insane life that Scott Ian has led for the last 31 years, the people he’s met, and the events that coincide. During each show, Scott Ian will take part in a special Q&A session with the audience. Fans also have the opportunity to take part in a unique VIP Pack experience. S

Black Sabbath Wins Grammy Award

Back in December the Grammy nominees for "best metal performance" were announced, and if you've forgotten the lineup was as follows:

"T.N.T." - Anthrax
"God Is Dead?" - Black Sabbath
"The Enemy Inside" - Dream Theater
"In Due Time" - Killswitch Engage
"Room 24" - Volbeat Featuring King Diamond

While many put their money down on Volbeat, it turns out Black Sabbath actually took home the win for "God Is Dead?"

The track was also nominated for "best rock song" and the new album "13" (reviewed here) was up for "best rock album," although Sabbath didn't actually snag a win in either of those categories. Here were the nominations for best rock song and best rock album: More...

2013 Metal Grammy Nominees Revealed

The 2013 Grammy nominees in the "Best Metal Performance" category have now been revealed, and are as follows:

"T.N.T." - Anthrax
"God Is Dead?" - Black Sabbath
"The Enemy Inside" - Dream Theater
"In Due Time" - Killswitch Engage
"Room 24" - Volbeat Featuring King Diamond

As usual, there's nothing on the extreme side to be found, but at least actual metal bands have made the list. Anyone want to bet which performance wins?

Keep in mind, last year Halestorm somehow won best metal performance in a lineup that featured Lamb of God, Megadeth, and Iron Maiden, so it seems likely voting for the most rock-focused and least metallic band may be the way to go.

And when you're done with that, let us know what the REAL best metal performance of 2013 should have been - Grammy's be damned!
