I've never been to an open air music festival. Mostly since most music fests have only one or two artists who I like and try to jam as many different styles of music into one festival as possible to the point where they have no target audience anymore. Lollapalooza is perhaps the biggest offender in that regard to he point where it appeals to both everyone and nobody simultaneously. But thankfully Chicago finally got a metal festival of its own to compensate for a lot of the directionless festivals that the city is known for that have kept me at bay for so long.
Milwaukee Metalfest closed up around a decade ago so Chicago getting a heavy metal festival was (literally) music to my ears. The Rust Belt had nothing in the way of metal festivals and the only other big metal fests have been Rocklahoma, Maryland Deathfest, New England Metal and Hardcore Fest and 70,000 Tons of Metal. As somebody who doesn't live within driving distance from Oklahoma, Maryland, Massachusetts or Florida, I was incredibly excited for something to hit the Midwest as it was long overdue.
But the part that got me most excited was the potential for the future. Specifically a future where artists who only do festivals and mini-tours can finally hit a big outdoor stage and do so in my hometown. Think Anaal Nathrakh, Samael, Ihsahn, Pig Destroyer and Zardonic being able to not only play a real festival show in the Midwest but also be introduced to a whole new audience who would be coming for the far more mainstream headliner. At the very least, the fest could use some less obscure second stage openers and some more foreign bands who haven't come to America for years like Primordial, Vreid or Orphaned Land. But for a brand new festival, the lineup wasn't bad by any means, particularly when it came to headliners. It's a possible future outlet for all the cool stuff that I would never otherwise get to see in coming years which is what got me psyched more than anything else.
I waited in the mother of all lines upon arriving on Friday for a full 90 minutes. Everyone wanted to be in early to catch the opening band on the opening day of the inaugural festival. And the person in front of me was the evil doppelganger of a friend of mine from college. Same body. Same haircut. Same facial features. Same teeth. It was just completely uncanny, especially since one of them lives in west Iowa and the other in east Nebraska. More...

After an on-stage melt down that had many thinking the band had broken up, Five Finger Death Punch has revealed new tour dates with Papa Roach, In This Moment, and From Ashes To New. Says Zoltan Bathory of Five Finger Death Punch:
“This tour is shaping up to be the perfect storm. We are really good friends with Papa Roach so for years we've been talking about touring together and it’s finally coming together in a big way. Both 5fdp and Papa Roach are bands of the people - our fans are who propelled us to success. So what better way than to give the fans ownership in the tour? In the world of Wikipedia and Kickstarter where crowd funding and crowd sourcing has become the standard of community effort and the new way of making things happen this might quite possibly be the future of touring - you simply ask the fans where they want you to go."
"We are super excited to be sharing the stage on this co-headliner with FFDP,” says Papa Roach vocalist, Jacoby Shaddix. “This will give Papa Roach the chance to put on the best, most epic live show to date. Our fans are going to be so stoked for these shows coming up. We seriously can't wait to get out on the road for this tour." More...

In This Moment has had an almost fairytale ascent to fame - on the surface. The years of hard work, setbacks, heartache and blood aren't immediately obvious to the casual observer, but then the "Blood Legion" are not your typical fans. They understand and relate to this ethos of a strong work ethic and family above all because they are the band's family.
Maria Brink had this to say: "'Rise of the Blood Legion - Greatest Hits (Chapter 1)' is a tribute dedicated to everyone who has risen with us through the blood, the sweat, the thick and the thin. We are honored to have such a beautiful connection with our Blood Legion family, it's amazing that Century Media Records is releasing this compilation so everyone can hear our personal favorites over the last ten years. We love you all and the journey has just begun, Stay the course with us. We are immortal, We rise from the wraith, We are eternal, You are my blood legion My faith. This is for you"
Chris Howorth from the band had this to say: "This compilation is for the 'Blood Legion' our die hard fans, We wouldn't be doing any of this without our fans, this album is for them. The songs were hand picked by Maria and myself and we feel they show the growth of our band over the last 10 years, I hope everyone enjoys this. Thanks again for joining us on this incredible journey!"
"Rise of the Blood Legion - Greatest Hits (Chapter 1)" will be in stores May 5th, 2015. The track listing is as follows: More...
In This Moment just issued the following statement online apologizing to fans in Munich over a botched live show:
"We would like to sincerely apologize for what happened yesterday, it was for us the worst show (tech wise) in the last few years, there were many issues, from the wrong equipment being sent out to us, power issues in the club, and other numerous issues we couldn't foresee.
"We traveled for many hours and spent lots of money to bring a special show to you and unfortunately things didn't work out as planned. We will be back and hope to make it up to you asap.
"That being said, the fans that we did meet were incredible and we love you and appreciate you more than words can say." More...

Black Friday and Cyber Monday are a point of much contention among the metal community (with its overall disdain for consumerism, commercial whoring, and conformity) - so much so that every year Daniel Vrangsinn's (Carpathian Forest) label Misantrof even releases the "Holy Fucking ANTIChristmas" compilation in December.
Despite that, many of the underground labels do offer sales and discounts the week of Thanksgiving, so if you're looking to get some quality metal, hardcore, or rock releases on a budget, this is the time to do it - and most of it is online or digital in nature, so as a bonus, you don't have to get stomped to death by a horde of deal hunters at 5 AM!
More links will be added throughout the week as labels and distros announce their various sales, so check back in often.
If actually buying music in physical format (and especially on vinyl) is more your thing than ordering online, then RECORD STORE DAY has compiled a handy list just for you of limited run, exclusive, or Black Friday-first releases only available in stores. Peruse the full list over here.
For the digital music junkies, AMAZON.COM has dozens of $5 digital hard rock and metal albums from bands like Arch Enemy, In This Moment, White Zombie, Lamb Of God, Chimaira, and many more. The deals run through the full month of November. More...
