Ihsahn Posts Art Inspired By Upcoming Album

Solo artist Ihsahn, formerly of Emperor, has posted artwork online for a new t-shirt design illustrated by Maria Picassó. The design is inspired by themes from the musician's upcoming fourth album, which Ihsahn has stated is currently "in progress." The fourth album will follow-up "After" (reviewed here), and additional details on the title, track listing, and release date will be announced as they are made available.

Three of Ihsahn's former side projects were also covered in a recent edition of the "Unearthing the Metal Underground" column, which can be found at this location.

Ihsahn Comments On Playing ProgPower USA

Former Emperor vocalist/guitarist Ihsahn will make his first American solo appearance at ProgPower USA, scheduled for September 14th - 17th at Center Stage in Atlanta. Confirmed by festival organizer Glenn Harveston, Ihsahn replaces Arcturus on the Friday evening lineup of the popular music festival.

Ihsahn comments, "I am very excited to get the opportunity to play at ProgPower. My backing band, Leprous, played the festival last year and had a fantastic time. Given the nature of my solo-material, I believe this festival will be a great place to present it live. I have already performed at several festivals/shows in Europe in 2009/2010 and will do a few more this year.”

IHSAHN’s performance is expected to include selections from all three solo albums – "The Adversary" (2006), "Angl" (2008) and his most recent, "After" (2010). You can also check out Metalunderground.com's look into three of Ihsahn's side projects in a recent entry of our Unearthing the Metal Underground column at this location.

Unearthing The Underground Ihsahn Side Projects

Each week with Unearthing the Metal Underground we take a look at three bands that haven’t had a chance to make as big an impact in the music scene as they should. Whether due to lack of label support, remote location, or just simple obscurity, there are many bands in the underground well worth the time of any serious metal fan.

Rather than looking at three bands in the same region or connected by a similar style, this week we’re delving into three groups that are all relatively unknown side projects of Norwegian prodigy Ihsahn. Probably best known for his work in black metal legion Emperor (which was covered as part of our “Black Metal History Month” at this location), Ihsahn has since headed out on his own to release three solo albums. But before the stage handle Ihsahn was a name known by itself, Vegard Sverre Tveitan was involved in many different projects ranging from freezing cold black metal to the entirely symphonic and even into more bizarre territory with sounds rarely, if ever, heard elsewhere.

After releasing his first solo album “The Adversary,” Ihsahn took a year off to work with other acts and continue to write new music. As black metal fans took in his new solo direction and decided if it stood up to the Emperor material, the musician looked to an entirely unexpected source for his latest collaboration. Teaming up with Norwegian hardingfiddle player Knut Buen, the Hardingrock project was born.

Heading in a vastly different direction than would be expected, Hardingrock’s only album “Grimen” (reviewed here) mixes fiddle heavy folk music, keyboards courtesy of Ihsahn’s wife, spoken word segments provided solely in the Nynorsk dialect, and yes, even some blistering black metal screams. If you are willing to try something vastly different than the standard fare, head over to the band’s MySpace page or checkout the songs “Fanitullen,” “Faens Marsj,” or “Daudingen” in the clips below.

Arcturus Pulls Out Of ProgPower USA Festival

European progressive metal act Arcturus has announced that it has pulled out of the forthcoming ProgPower USA XII festival. The band posted the following statement online;

"Arcturus still suffer from hibernation sickness, and due to outdated parts we deeply regret to inform you: We are canceling ProgPower USA. This lack of maintenance is entirely our own fault, and sincere apologies go out to the promoter and all ticket holders, especially those of you who had planned to travel far."

Festival promoter Glenn Harveston has since announced that Arcturus is being replaced with former Emperor frontman Ihsahn. A statement from Harveston is available below.

"I have no idea what the hell that [Arcturus] statement means. I'm not going to try and figure it out either, as I have wasted enough time and effort on that 'band' already. In the meantime, I would like to personally thank Ihsahn for taking the slot. His professionalism in this situation is greatly appreciated."

Sunday Old School: BMHM Part 3. Emperor

As many people are aware, February is Black History Month in the United States of America. Always one to respect cultures and take part in something, we here at MetalUnderground.com are dedicating this month to the history of Black Metal. We will be looking at some of the biggest names in the genre, those who helped to shape it, and some of the promising younger black metal bands in the underground.

The Emperor is dead, long live the Emperor! Or at least that’s how the rallying cry goes these days, and with good reason. Bands like Immortal and Marduk may still be churning out albums in our current decade, but if there is one name synonymous with black metal, it is Emperor. In honor of black metal history month, we previously looked at two bands that influenced early black metal (Sodom and King Diamond), and now we’ll delve into the heart of the subject with a band that represents the core ideals and sounds of the genre.

Despite having only recorded four main studio albums, the last of which came out a full decade ago, Emperor is still one of the most widely known, widely respected, and widely requested black metal bands in existence. The group of kids from Norway who became Emperor probably had no idea what they were going to eventually birth when they started putting together rasping screams and freezing cold atmosphere. Emperor has left a lasting mark on the world of extreme metal, and not just for fans of Norwegian black metal. More...
