Norwegian extreme metal outfit Enslaved picked up the Spellmann Award for Best Metal Album of 2010 yesterday (Macrh 5th) for their most recent studio release, "Axioma Ethica Odini," which was released last year through Indie Recordings. The award is the Norwegian equivilant to the Grammys and Enslaved thought off tough competition to earn it, beating Shining, Solefald and former Emperor frontman, Ihsahn to scoop the prize.
As many people are aware, February is Black History Month in the United States of America. Always one to respect cultures and take part in something, we here at MetalUnderground.com are dedicating this month to the history of Black Metal. We will be looking at some of the biggest names in the genre, those who helped to shape it, and some of the promising younger black metal bands in the underground.
The Emperor is dead, long live the Emperor! Or at least that’s how the rallying cry goes these days, and with good reason. Bands like Immortal and Marduk may still be churning out albums in our current decade, but if there is one name synonymous with black metal, it is Emperor. In honor of black metal history month, we previously looked at two bands that influenced early black metal (Sodom and King Diamond), and now we’ll delve into the heart of the subject with a band that represents the core ideals and sounds of the genre.
Despite having only recorded four main studio albums, the last of which came out a full decade ago, Emperor is still one of the most widely known, widely respected, and widely requested black metal bands in existence. The group of kids from Norway who became Emperor probably had no idea what they were going to eventually birth when they started putting together rasping screams and freezing cold atmosphere. Leprous recently announced upcoming shows in Japan acting as solo artist Ihsahn's backing band. Ihsahn has also now checked in with the following update about Leprous recording a new album in his studio:
"Leprous recording new album in Ivory Shoulder. We are happy to have the guys in Leprous working in our studio these days. So far the recording has been going great, and new material is absolutely fantastic! In lack of a crystal ball, we would still definitely predict this to be one of the best progressive albums coming out in 2011."
Ihsahn also announced in October of last year that writing had begun for his fourth solo album and follow up to 2010's "After."
Vocalist Einar Solberg of Norwegian act Leprous has issued the following announcement about the group acting as solo artist Ihsahn's backing band in Japan:
"Leprous and Ihsahn to play in Japan for the very first time! We're very proud to announce that Leprous will visit Japan in May! We'll perform at the Kabuto Metal Festival first in Osaka, Japan on May 21st 2011 and then the following day in Tokyo, Japan. Also on the same two days, Leprous will be performing at the same festival as the backing band for Ihsahn."
Leprous also recently began recording a follow-up album to the band's 2009 release "Tall Poppy Syndrome."
Former Emperor front man and solo artist Ihsahn has checked in with the following announcement about contributing as a guest vocalist on Devin Townsend's "Deconstruction" album:
"I have been a long time fan of Devin and his work, and when he asked me to do some vocals for his upcoming Deconstruction album, I said yes right away. Devin is one of those few uncompromising artists who goes anywhere with their music, wherever that takes them. Nothing but respect!"
Ihshan was also recently nominated for a Norwegian grammy for his third solo album "After."
Former Emperor guitarist and solo artist Ihsahn has been nominated for a Norwegian grammy (Spellemannsprisen) for his latest album "After." Ihsahn also recently announced he has begun writing new material for an upcoming fourth solo album.

Finnish progressive death metal super group Barren Earth has announced an appearance at the upcoming Brutal Assault Festival in the Czech Republic on August 14th, 2010. Norway's Leprous has issued the following update about performing as solo artist Ihsahn's backing band when Ihsahn headline's this year's edition of the Southern Discomfort festival:
"Ihsahn will be headlining this years Southern Discomfort Festival in Kristiansand, Norway on September 17, 2010. Leprous will, as always, be the backing band for Ihsahn. We're very much looking forward to this show."

Norway's In Vain has checked in with the following update about appearing at the Southern Discomfort Festival:
"Finally we are able to make this happen. We are very happy to announce that we will play this year's Southern Discomfort Festival 17-18 Sept. Other acts include Ihsahn, 1349, The Batallion, Manifest, etc. We will play Friday night. We area also working on booking more gigs for the upcoming autumn/winter. More information about that later!"

Solo artist Ihsahn, formerly of Emperor and Peccatum, has issued the following statement about upcoming live appearances:
"Some of you have perhaps already seen Ihsahn and his backing band Leprous at the Inferno Festivalen (NOR) and Hellfest Festival (FR). For those of you that haven’t, or want to see more, there are several chances throughout the year, with Tuska Open Air (FIN) next. In August they will be performing every weekend, starting with Wacken Open Air (GER), then the trip goes to Brutal Assault (CZ), Camden Electric Ballroom (GB) and last but not least Hole in the Sky (NOR). In September Ihsahn will headline the Norwegian festival Southern Discomfort."

Solo artist Ihsahn has posted footage online of his performance of the song "On The Shores" during the Inferno Festival with Leprous as his backing band. The video clip can be viewed below. "On The Shores" is from Ihsahn's latest album "After."
The organisers of the Czech Republics Brutal Assault festival has announced two more bands for this years edition of the event. New York hardcore legends Agnostic Front will now be performing at the festival, along with other new confirmation, Swedish black metal artists Watain. The festival takes place in the town of Josefov from August 12th-14th.

Solo artist Ihsahn (formerly of Emperor, Peccatum, and Thou Shalt Suffer) has announced he will be appearing at the 2010 edition of the Tuska Festival with Norwegian metallers Leprous as his backing band. The Tuska Open Air festival takes place from July 2nd - 4th in Helsinki, Finland. More info on the festival can be found at this location. Mnemosyne Productions has announced that solo artist Ihsahn (formerly of Emperor and Peccatum) will be playing at several European festivals this summer. Ihsahn will also use Norwegian metal act Leprous as his backing band. “Rehearsals are going great, and it has been very exciting to explore the new material also in this live format. I am really looking forward to these shows,." Ihsahn comments.

Solo artist Ihsahn, who has previously been involved with Emperor and Peccatum, has posted the third and final studio report from his upcoming album "After." The video clip can be viewed below. The mixing for the album took place at Fascination Street Studio with Jens Bogren. "After" will be released in Europe on January 25th and in the U.S. on January 26th.
