Ihsahn To Unleash New Album “Ámr” In May

Emperor mainman Ihsahn reveals a May 04th release date via Candlelight/Spinefarm for his new effort “Ámr“. Opeth guitarist Fredrik Åkesson lends a guest solo to the track “Arcana Imperii“. Tells Ihsahn of that and the performance of his longtime drummer, Tobias Ørnes Andersen on the new release:
“It’s just lovely to work with Tobias. I know that he can technically handle anything I throw at him. But more importantly, when I say like; ‘I want this to feel like the vacuum between words in a conversation with Hannibal Lecter,’ he will say, ‘Yeah, I get that!’ [Laughs] So for him, it’s not about showing off, it’s always about relating to the vibe. With Fredrik, we met first time in Oslo, when I did my debut solo show as support to Opeth and later we’ve hung out on different festivals when we happen to play the same day. Last time in Japan when we played there with Emperor and Opeth. We were talking about guitars and I said, ‘Not to kiss up to you or anything, but you’re absolutely one of my favourite players, so some day I might call you for a guest solo…’ and he says, ‘I’m in!’ He did a fabulous job.”

Emperor Reuniting For "Anthems 2017" Shows
Following the previous 20th anniversary shows for "In The Nightside Eclipse" a few years back, Emperor is again reunited for a slew of dates in remembrance of follow-up album "Anthems To The Welkin At Dusk."
Front man Ihsahn just issued this update:
"Finished a very successful pre-prod with Emperor this week for the upcoming #anthemstothewelkinatdusk2017 shows! Original hand painted backdrop from 1997 in the background to set the mood. Thanks to Konsert-Service as and @tonedeafproductionsdk for making this sound right both on stage and for everyone attending this summer!"
Stay tuned for full details on the dates and venues to be announced shortly.

Ty Arthur Releasing New Grimdark Novel
Following his debut sci-fi novella “Empty” from 2016, heavy metal scribe Ty Arthur (Metalunderground.com's very own xFiruath) returns with new full-length horror novel “Light Dawning.” Pivoting away from the emptiness of space, the book dives headlong into the waters of fantasy, but with a seriously grimdark twist.
This next foray into the bleaker corners of human existence is officially slated for release on Friday, May 26th, 2017. Kindle digital pre-orders are now online here, with physical editions to follow shortly.
Like its predecessor, the creation of “Light Dawning” was driven forward by the power of music, with special thanks in particular due to U.K. avant-garde black metal group Code, Norwegian musical enigma Ihsahn, and Chilean prog rock group Bauda. To get an advance preview of the themes and tone of the novel, a music playlist matching several scenes can be heard via Spotify here or in the player below.
Once known as the City on the Hill and revered far and wide for its independence and boundless opportunity, Cestia has become home only to the damned. Surviving under the brutal occupation of a southern empire for three long years, the oppressed populace has lost hope of liberation, turning instead towards an increasingly desperate rebellion willing to commit any atrocity for a chance at freedom.
As total war approaches, four lost souls trapped behind Cestia's walls are on a collision course with fate, destined to either save the city or see it utterly destroyed while calling on forces beyond mankind's comprehension. For good or ill, the light of a new day is about to dawn. More...

Reader Poll: Vote Your Best Metal Album
Update: the staff awards are now here! Check 'em out and see who won at this location.
Our year-end awards for 2016 are nearly here as the staff just wrapped up our internal voting on the best album, performance, DVD, and metal newcomer of the year, along with a vote on our most anticipated album coming in 2017.
While awaiting our official awards ceremony later this week, we want to know: what was YOUR favorite metal album that came out this year? Cast your vote below!
In the poll we've listed out every single album that was nominated by our staff this year, but if you thought some other album should be #1 instead that's perfectly fine - just hit "Other" and type in your nominee.
Wondering why we have so many nominees? Each of our staff members nominates five albums, and we reach our winner by consensus of the album that gets the most votes, resulting in a well-rounded winner who was appreciated by a larger group of metal heads rather than just by people who prefer one sub-genre.
Since you can see who we nominated, we'd also like to know: who do you think was our ultimate winner in all the nominees? More...
Ritual Festival Announces First Bands

We are honoured to have Ihsahn headline the festival but we also can’t wait to reveal many more incredible bands for you over the coming months."
Perhaps the most prominent announcement is that former Emperor frontman Ihsahn will be headlining the festival, where he will be promoting his latest album, "Arktis" and has also hinted that he could debut some new material at the show, stating:
