Ihsahn Shares "The Distance Between Us" Video

Ihsahn has released the final single to be taken from his forthcoming self-titled album. "The Distance Between Us" introduces us to the more melancholic, spacious side of the release. Accompanying the track is a haunting new video, a continuation of the conceptual storyline which has been spread across previous singles, "Pilgrimage To Oblivion" and "Twice Born," all filmed by Shaun Hodson at Loki Films.

New album, definitively titled "Ihsahn," will be released on 16th February 2024 via Candlelight Records. Daring to push the realms of creative expressionism even further with his eighth studio offering, the Norwegian progressive metal visionary will release two melodically interlinked versions of the same album: one prog metal, one fully symphonic, both creating a cinematically-influenced masterpiece.

Commenting on the new track,"The first two singles were taken from the beginning of the conceptual narrative, generating the hubris and determination required. With this last single, we’re getting closer to the end of the story and hence both music and lyrics express a more reflective and melancholic perspective." More...

Ihsahn Unveils "The Observer" Single

Norwegian progressive metal pioneer Ihsahn has released the final single from his "Fascination Street Sessions" EP, which is out now via Candlelight Records. New track, "The Observer," is a dynamic song featuring long-time keyboardist and friend Øystein H. Aadland on lead vocals, which provides stunning contrast between Oystein's and Ihsahn's vocal delivery.

Comments Ihsahn: "I had a great time doing these sessions! Getting the band in the room...playing off the vibe of what we were recording in these extraordinary rooms. Working with world class engineers like Jens and his team, capturing vintage amps and instruments together with my talented musicians. This EP really represents a moment in time for me. And all along, the wonderful people at URM Academy captured every little detail on camera, so that down the line, fellow studio nerds can share the experience and learn from all these amazing people I get to work alongside."

Known as a constantly evolving artist who loves to transcend boundaries, Ihsahn’s musical journey has been relentlessly fascinating and frequently revelatory. With his penchant for collaborative projects and fascination with production, this new three-track EP, featuring two new original songs and one cover version, is the direct result of Ihsahn joining forces with URM Academy's online educational program for music production, and producer/engineer Jens Bogren (Opeth, Dimmu Borgir, Arch Enemy, Powerwolf) of Fascination Street Studios. Ihsahn Announces Livestream Show

Shapeshifting progressive metal pioneer Ihsahn has announced an exclusive set at Munin Live, streaming from his hometown of Notodden on April 4th at 7pm BST (8pm CET). Once again pushing the boundaries of unconstrained creation, the Norwegian master of the avant-garde will premiere both of his latest critically acclaimed EPs "Telemark" and "Pharos" in their entirety, including tracks that have never been performed live before. The set will also include excerpts from "Das Seelenbrechen," and feature Einar Solberg from Leprous.

Get your livestream tickets here: https://munin.live/x-event/ihsahn-telemark-pharos/

Having returned to that early black metal sound on "Telemark" Ihsahn was due to perform at Norway’s Inferno Festival in April 2020, followed by a series of live concerts and festival appearances that would showcase his more extreme work. Cancelled due to the pandemic he says: "We couldn't wait to perform the last EP. I even ordered stage props with David Thiérrée’s illustrations. The plan was to do Telemark shows through the summer and focus in on my black metal roots. And then as a counterpart, I wanted to do a different show based on the more mellow, experimental side of what I do, trying to connect the two forms together.

"For many years I felt that I should do something purely black metal again," he says, explaining how this eventually led to the abstract basis behind Telemark and Pharos. "However, I would feel very limited by that in the form of an album. And then I would have wanted an outlet for the opposite. I've done the full black metal thing in the past but I'm also not a pop artist. I think it would be hard for me to fill an album within that format. This has been a challenge of limiting myself to a certain expression."

Ihsahn Posts A-Ha Cover Online

Shapeshifting progressive metal pioneer Ihsahn has once again pushed the boundaries of unconstrained creation, with the release of his striking single/video tribute to Norwegian pop pioneers A-HA. "Manhattan Skyline" is taken from his new EP "Pharos," out 11th September on Candlelight Records, and features the phenomenal vocal talents of Einar Solberg (Leprous).

"Manhattan Skyline" was originally released in 1986 by A-HA and reached number 13 in the UK Singles Chart. With a refresh for 2020 Ihsahn has produced a delicate but true-to-the-original tribute, combining a soft ballad-like verse that explodes into a bombastic rock chorus featuring all of the melodramatic grandeur of the original.

Directed and filmed by Troll Toftenes, the video sees Ihsahn at his most passionate and embracing. With the breathtaking landscape of Norway as the backdrop, Ihsahn plays his Aristides T/0 Lilac Pearl Satin Guitar atop Gaustatoppen, the highest mountain in Norway, at sunset whilst Einar Solberg's (Leprous) earnest and emotional vocals soar to other worldly levels of brilliance. The spectacle never relinquishes its hold on the viewer.

Ihsahn admits that his love of A-HA is not new, revealing: "There are some hints of A-HA even on the second Emperor album!"

This may frustrate followers of the orthodoxy present within extreme music, but for IHSAHN, he has never worried about being confined to certain expectations.

"I never wanted to be as one-dimensional as this black metal image. When I turned 40, I stopped caring but if you start out playing black metal when you're 16, it's hardly because you want to be everybody's favourite." More...
