A Decade Of Metal In Review

On the 31 Dec 1999, no planes came crashing out of the sky, nuclear bombs went off or microwave ovens tried to eat anyone. However, times were about to change and in the metal scene change was already well underway. Let us take a stroll through the decade in metal that was.

Many of the 90s big names like Emperor and Pantera prepared to give their last venomous scream dying off in the wake of ever diminishing interest in the metal scene that had plagued the 90s. In the year 2000 a band named “Limp Bizkit” came out with an album called "Chocolate Starfish and the Hotdog Flavoured Water" and in a storm nu-metal took over the public perception of heavy music, changing the face of metal irreparably. Although nu-metal had already been pioneered by Korn, bands like Deftones, Disturbed, Mudvayne and Linkin Park all had breakout releases in 2000. More...

Lazarus A.D. Posts Making-Of Videos Online

This winter, Lazarus A.D. once again teamed up with Vision 4 Films to shoot their next video. "Absolute Power" will premiere sometime before their upcoming tour with Kreator, Voivod, Nachtmystium and Evile. The video is a bit different than their last two in that it has a bit of a story line.

Guitarist Dan Gapen comments: “We just shot the new video for our next single 'Absolute Power.' I would say it was fun but to be honest it was cold, windy and rainy the day of the shoot and I froze my ass off. All I have to say is this fucking video better come out sweet or I’m kicking the directors ass…haha! I think when it’s done, everyone will like how it turned out. Jason & Emmitt from Vision4Films are pros at what they do, we can’t say thank you enough. We look forward to seeing everyone on the upcoming Spring tour w/ Kreator and Voivod!”

The first of two making-of clips is live now at www.youtube.com/lazarusadband. The guys will be hitting the road this Spring with metal legends Kreator and Voivod along with newcomers Nachtmystium and Evile. Here are the tour dates: More...

Evile Issues "Infecting Nations" Tour Update

British thrashers EVILE are currently tearing their way around Europe on a headlining European tour. The "Infecting Nations" tour has seen EVILE perform a string of shows up and down the UK, with the band now in mainland Europe. Joining EVILE on the tour are American thrashers WARBRINGER and Israel's THE FADING. This is also EVILE's first tour with their new bassist, JOEL GRAHAM, who joined the band following the tragic death of their original bassist, MIKE ALEXANDER.

EVILE lead guitarist OL DRAKE reports from the road, "The tour is going great. We're getting along brilliantly with Warbringer and The Fading and it's just a general good feeling all around. I'm glad we're out with really friendly people, as I was dubious about going out so soon after our recent tragedy, but it's going good. Myself and Kevill have been playing Street Fighter 2 non-stop. I'm always Ryu, he's always Blanka. It is an epic battle. More...

Evile Announces New North American Tour Dates

British thrashers, EVILE have recently announced that they will be embarking on their first major North American tours with such legendary acts as KREATOR and OVERKILL. EVILE frontman/guitarist, Matt Drake recently took some time to proclaim his (and the band's) excitement to hit the road across the pond in March through early-May:

"Well it's about time it happened, we can finally say that we are coming to the USA!! It's been a long time coming because we've tried before, we've had a few plans made in the past to get to the states but they always fell through but it's finally confirmed and happening. We couldn't be happier that we get to lay waste to peoples senses on a nightly basis with such legendary bands that we have nothing but respect for, we're looking forward to meeting people who have listened to our cd's but never had the chance to see us live and we're also looking forward to introducing ourselves to a lot of new people and instead of easing ourselves into it by doing a week or so we're going for a full on two month straight tour with only a few days off, the way it should be!! I'm personally looking forward to being able to visit such iconic places as New York, Las Vegas, San Francisco as these are the kind of places i never thought i would be lucky enough to see. Ladies and gentlemen the British are coming!!!!" More...

British metal group Rise To Addiction has parted ways with bass player Joel Graham after he was selected to become the new bassist for British thrash metal band Evile. A message from the band reads as follows:

"Unfortunately for RTA, Joel (Graham - bass) has decided to leave the band and join EVILE full time, it's a real shame but Joel's replacement is already in rehearsals, so there won't be much downtime for the band. Please join us in wishing Joel and Evile good luck on their massive tour schedule for 2010!"

Graham has issued the following statement: "Although I'm moving to Evile, I can't help but feel that's it's a shame that I can't practically do both bands. I have had some amazing times with RTA and met some great people along the way. Thank You! I will miss Leigh (Oates), Aynsley (Dickinson) and Steve (Wray) but I will be sure to keep in touch with them as much as possible and we will remain great friends. More then anything I wish Rise To Addiction all the best and look forward to hearing, seeing and doing some festivals together with them in the very near future."

Evile Announces New Bassist

British thrashers EVILE have revealed the identity of their new bassist, who joins the band following the tragic and untimely death of their late bassist, Mike Alexander. Mike Alexander passed away on October 5th, 2009 while the band was on tour in Sweden.

EVILE members Matt Drake, Ol Drake and Ben Carter have released the following statement:

"This has been one of the most bizarre and surreal tasks we've ever had to undertake. It isn't like Mike has decided to leave the band and we're simply finding a new bass player, he was taken from us, and we were forced to replace him. In effect we had to look for a new Mike, but that would never happen. He was one of a kind, and we'll never forget him.

"We had hundreds upon hundreds of emails from bass players from around the world (though we can only realistically have a bassist from the UK), and we want to thank everyone for taking the time out to contact us, and the people who came to jam with us. We only had a certain amount of time to actually audition/jam with bass players before the upcoming tours, to get time in for rehearsing the songs, getting visas sorted etc.

"Our new bass player goes by the name Joel Graham. He's an excellent, experienced bass player, and a really nice guy. We'd all appreciate it if you gave him a warm welcome to the band, as this must be a bizarre situation for him to be in also. We'll be getting some photos taken with him soon so you can see us with Joel, we just wanted to get the news out there that we have a new bassist, and that we thank each and every person for auditioning. Mike would be honoured at the amount of respect and admiration you expressed to us through contacting us."

EVILE is set to kick off a headlining European tour in January. The "Infecting Nations" tour will start with a run of UK shows, before the band heads off to mainland Europe. Joining EVILE on the tour will be American thrashers WARBRINGER and Israel's THE FADING.

Evile Covers Pantera, Last Recording w/ Bassist

British thrashers EVILE recently recorded a PANTERA track for the upcoming Dimebag Darrell tribute album, which will be released on the cover of the 200th issue of the UK's Metal Hammer magazine.

The special CD and magazine are being released to coincide with the five-year anniversary of Dimebag's passing, and will be available in shops on December 16th.

Alongside various other well-known bands such as MACHINE HEAD, EVILE were asked to record a song as a tribute to the late guitarist. EVILE recorded a cover of the track "Cemetary Gates," and this tragically turned out to be the band's last recording before the untimely death of their own bassist, Mike Alexander, who passed away on October 5th while on tour in Sweden.

A behind-the-scenes video - the last video filmed with Mike - of EVILE recording the track at Parlour Studios with producer Russ Russell can be viewed below.

EVILE lead guitarist Ol Drake comments:

"The day we got the call from our manager, Julie Weir, saying Metal Hammer have asked us to pay tribute to Dimebag Darrell by covering a Pantera song, we couldn't have been more excited and honoured. I mean, how many more bands are there more worthy of paying tribute to the man? With us all being fans of Pantera, we swiftly said yes. Mike though was the biggest Pantera fan. He'd seen them years ago and absolutely worshipped Dimebag.

"After Dime got killed, Mike couldn't listen to 'Cemetary Gates' anymore. He'd always ask us to skip the track in the car/van/bus because it was too much for him. So when we chose to do the track it was tough for Mike, but I'm glad he did it. It turned out to be the last song he recorded, which to me is a strangely 'appropriate' tribute to him and Dimebag. I remember him nearing the verge of tears whilst I was doing the tremolo bends at the end of the track.

"We hope Pantera/Dimebag fans find this a fitting tribute from us, as we're simply fans ourselves who've been given this rare honour."

Metal Hammer editor Alexander Milas comments:

"I was genuinely over the moon when Evile volunteered to produce a track for our upcoming Dimebag tribute, a stunningly rendered cover of Pantera's classic 'Cemetary Gates'. So when the truly tragic news of Mike Alexander's all-too-premature departure from this world hit the office, the tragic irony wasn't lost on me or anyone here that Mike Alexander's tribute to the immortal legacy of Dimebag would also be a final testament to his own impeccable musicianship and commitment to the music we love.

"To understate the case slightly, it's a very special track indeed, and we're honoured that it's a part of our upcoming tribute collection. Rest in peace Dimebag, and rest in peace Mike Alexander."

The Dimebag Darrell tribute album contains the following tracks:

01. ZAKK WYLDE - "Suicide Note Pt. 1"
02. MACHINE HEAD - "Fucking Hostile"
03. MALEFICE - "I'm Broken"
04. AVENGED SEVENFOLD - "Walk"
05. EVILE - "Cemetery Gates"
06. FIVE FINGER DEATH PUNCH - "A New Level"
07. BIOHAZARD - "Mouth For War"
08. SYLOSIS - "Strength Beyond Strength"
09. CHIMAIRA - "Slaughtered"
10. UNEARTH - "Sandblasted Skin"
11. THROWDOWN - "Becoming"
12. KIUAS - "This Love"
13. THIS IS HELL - "Rise"

Evile Reveals Memorial Show Details

British thrash metal group Evile has revealed some more details regarding the forthcoming memorial shows the band has announced in England. The band will be joined by Irish thrash metal band Gama Bomb as well as London based thrash metal group Mutant and Bristol based thrash outfit Seregon for the shows. The concerts are being held to remember the bands bass player Mike Alexander who tragically passed away while the band was on tour with Amon Amarth last month in Sweden. A huge raffle will be taking place at the shows which include signed items from big name metal bands and limited edition prizes. The shows will be held on December 7th, 2009 at Rio's in Leeds and December 8th, 2009 at the Underworld in London. Tickets are £8 in advance and can only be purchased at the venues or £10 on the door. All money made from the shows will be going towards the family of Mike Alexander. To view a list of the raffle prizes, you can head over to the Mike Alexander memorial website.

Evile lead guitarist Ol Drake comments: "These two nights are for all the friends and fans of Mike who haven't had a real chance to say goodbye, and also for us to hold something a lot more appropriate than any funeral could be. Mike wasn't religious, and his beliefs were solely based in music, so there is no better way to say goodbye. He lived for music and metal. We picked a few bands who Mike liked and we'll no doubt be playing a few covers on the night. We're holding a raffle with LOTS of items kindly donated by some amazing people and bands from around the world. Keep an eye on our sites for details of these - please come along and grab a raffle ticket - all money is going to the family."

Gama Bomb frontman Philly Byrne adds: "It's a real honour to play these shows for Mike. He was a star of a man and a brilliant friend, and it'll be great to do something for his family and friends. We're sure everyone will show their support for him at the shows."
