Judas Priest Debut New Black Sabbath Cover Version

Judas Priest have unveiled an updated version of their cover of Black Sabbath’s classic “War Pigs,” now featuring posthumously released vocals from the late Ozzy Osbourne.

While Judas Priest were unable to take part in the July 5th ‘Back To The Beginning’ farewell celebration for Osbourne and Black Sabbath—due to prior touring obligations with The Scorpions—the band instead issued their own cover of “War Pigs” on July 2nd.

Longtime friend and peer Rob Halford revealed just how deeply Osbourne’s passing on July 22nd affected him, telling Talkin’ Rock with Meltdown that he “curled up in a ball and bawled” for hours after receiving the news.

Proceeds from the single in the UK will benefit both The Glenn Tipton Parkinson’s Foundation—established by Judas Priest’s guitarist after stepping down from live duties in 2018 following his Parkinson’s diagnosis—and Cure Parkinson’s, a charity personally chosen by Osbourne for proceeds from the ‘Back To The Beginning’ show.

Judas Priest Share Black Sabbath Cover

Despite a star-studded lineup assembled to bid farewell to Black Sabbath and Ozzy Osbourne this weekend at Villa Park in Birmingham, UK, one notable absence is that of fellow Birmingham legends Judas Priest.

Their exclusion from the event stems from an unfortunate scheduling conflict. Judas Priest had previously committed to a performance with Scorpions before being invited to take part in Sabbath and Ozzy’s final show. Frontman Rob Halford expressed his disappointment, saying he was “absolutely gutted” to miss this historic moment.

With Black Sabbath and Ozzy’s July 5th farewell looming, Judas Priest opted to honor their heavy metal forebears in a different way—by releasing the live video below of their own take on Black Sabbath’s 1970 anti-war classic, “War Pigs.”

In sharing the performance, the band offered the following tribute: More...

Former Judas Priest Drummer Les Binks Passes Away

Les Binks, the Northern Irish drummer best known for his stint with Judas Priest from 1977 to 1979, has sadly passed away at the age of seventy three. No cause of death has been announced. His former bandmates broke the news by posting a statement on their social media pages, which reads as follows:

"We are deeply saddened about the passing of Les Binks and send our love to his family, friends and fans.

"The acclaimed drumming he provided was first class - demonstrating his unique techniques, flair and precision.

"Thank you Les. Your acclaim will live on."

Binks began his career in 1973, being heard by rock fans on Deep Purple bassist Roger Glover's solo album, "The Butterfly Ball And The Grasshopper's Feast," before scoring two hits in America as a member of Fancy, including a rendition of "Wild Thing" which saw his drumming sampled numerous times. He would join Judas Priest shortly after they finished recording "Sin After Sin," produced by his former bandmate Roger Glover and in 1978, recording two studio albums with the band; "Stained Class," which featured "Beyond The Realms Of Death," a song he co-wrote, and "Killing Machine" (renamed "Hell Bent For Leather" in the United States.) He would also feature on "Unleashed In The East," a live album which entered the top ten in the British album charts and has gone on to become one of the most revered live albums in metal history. He left the band in 1979 and would have stints with Lionheart and Tytan, among many others.

Diamond's Mine: The Best Of 2024

2024 is finally pinched off from our collective sphincters and as is becoming a far too familiar gripe by now, the state of the world is akin to a two day old Big Mac; neglected, unappealing and probably infested by vermin. However, we once again have been able to rely on the music we love to get us through this dumpster fire of an existence and were given some treats too, not just in the form of incredible albums but also the Acid Bath reunion we all thought would never happen, as well as the equally surprising comebacks of Nevermore and Nailbomb, not to mention The Sword and Slayer. Of course, we also said goodbye to such bands as UFO, Misery Signals and Twelve Foot Ninja and sadly dealt with the passings of former Iron Maiden frontman Paul Di'anno, ex Great White singer Jack Russell and Blake Harrison of Pig Destroyer and Hatebeak, to name only three dearly missed comrades. Time and metal marches ever on though and as always, we begin this recap by welcoming some new names into the fold.

Best Newcomer

Though it's becoming ever more difficult for new bands to make a name for themselves, there were quite a few who were able to put themselves on the map this year. One early example would be Hellman, from the Chilean capital city, Santiago, who unleashed their debut full length, "Born, Suffering, Death" at the beginning of the year, a very good example of death n' roll, recommended for those of who miss Entombed. There were quite a few bands who released their first albums this year but for me, there was one clear winner... More...
