The DOWNSPELL family are 6 very unstable individuals. They have to create the most brutal music possible just so they don't go postal on every person surrounding them. The band's heavy groove and rhythmic hooks are what makes DOWNSPELL sound different than your typical death metal band. And their speed-picking and intense double-bass separates them from the nu-metal genre. Relentless dual vocalists drive the music towards a feverish pitch. On stage, DOWNSPELL's relentless adrenaline and in-your-face antics, infuse the crowd with flurries of energy. The crowd then hurls it back at the band like a possesed cult. DOWNSPELL'S connection with their audience is what truly separates them from every other band. The six founding members of DOWNSPELL came together in SITKA, ALASKA, a small fishing town with only 14 miles of paved road and little to do. MIKE (GUITARS), originally from California, met up with ERIC (DRUMS), JAKE (GUITARS), WAYNE (VOCALS), BRAD (VOCALS) and GREG (BASS), in the accidental way that seems unique to small towns. Harsh weather and seasonal work gave DOWNSPELL the opportunity to lock themselves away from outside contact and write their own brand of "metal". After 8 months of writing and rehearsing, DOWNSPELL played only three shows in Alaska before deciding to relocate. SAN DIEGO was calling, and DOWNSPELL answered. Once in San Diego, DOWNSPELL recorded a 5-song demo and began playing live shows. DOWNSPELL quickly made a name for themselves and began opening for such national acts as: Deeds of Flesh, Skinless, Exodus, Dying Fetus, Cattle Decapitation, Prong, Asesino, Cage, Prototype, Hemlock, SX10 and many more. In early "03, DOWNSPELL recorded their first full-length demo entitled "NO REDEMPTION", which their So-Cal fans eagerly devoured. Multiple tracks from "NO REDEMPTION" received airplay often on ROCK 105.3's "Another State of Mind". In October of '03, DOWNSPELL shared the stage with King Diamond, Entombed, and Pissing Razors at the "BANG YER HEAD FESTIVAL". In mid '04, a line-up change was necessary. Enter long-time friends, KENNY (BASS), and TYSON (VOCALS), two excellent musicians bringing forth intensity and dynamics. The diversity of the final line up's individual musical tastes, is what created such a unique sound to metal. From Nile to EyeHateGod, Pig Destroyer to Neurosis, Slipknot to Sabbath. This is the formula that makes the DOWNSPELL machine grow stronger. With their fresh line-up and newly evolved sound, DOWNSPELL has just finished recording a full length album, entitled "AFTERBIRTH", at Golden Track Recording Studio. DOWNSPELL toured all summer, across the country and back, playing numerous shows and festivals in support of this critically aclaimed production. DOWNSPELL is also featured along side Slayer, Lamb of God, Nile, Isis, and others in XYZ CLOTHING Co.'s new extreme skate video entitled, "DECADE of DESTRUCTION", which is available online at decadeofdestruction.com or hit the link on this page. DOWNSPELL will also be on the road in support of XYZ and this video release. DOWNSPELL is currently putting the final touches on two new music videos for "Pogrom" and "Hatestrain" which are both featured on the up-coming album. Our own Tyson Montrucchio from XYZ ENTERTAINMENT is the creator/director so you know the video are going to be sick and twisted (production wise and mentally) . DOWNSPELL is GAINING MOMENTUM... Alaskan/San Diego metal band DOWNSPELL are wrappin' up production on their new album. After losing the recording of their eagerly anticipated new album in the last mixing stages, Downspell regrouped and are in the last stages of polishing the album. But as guitarist Jake Phillips says "anytime you're that mad, let down, frustrated, depressed, etc... It usually leads to great fucking tunes!" Jake also added "we had A LOT of time to rework some songs that we had issues with and also get a few of the guest musicians back on the second take. Due to everyones touring/personal schedules we lost a few key guests that unfortunately couldn't redo their parts. But we still got RANDY BLYTHE of Lamb of God and also BOBBY FERRY from 16 (Relapse Records) to get in there and they definitely kicked some serious ass contributing." More...

San Diego, California's BROKEN FOUNDATION was the first act I caught upon my arrival. A clearcut hardcore metal band with some death metal element . The crowd immediately went ballistic for these guys and to be perfectly honest, I didn't see it. Not that they weren't full of energy, engaging the crowd and pretty much doing their thing well. It's just that they sounded like everyone else in this genre. Nothing new, nothing gained here. And to be perfectly honest with you all, I'm tired of it.
Next up was the very reason I made the trek from Los Angeles to San Diego in the first place. I have heard and seen pretty much all the hot underground metal acts this year and clearly there is a legend in our midst with hometown giants, DOWNSPELL. The vibe around these guys was like you were about to witness 'Fight Club' on stage. Tons of goatee and tattooed down locals were wearing the band's T-shirt and looking like they wanted to start a ten minute brawl. It only added to the great anticipation building in my stomach for when the mighty Downspell took the stage. And once they did appear with their instruments, like a crack rock explodes to flame, Downspell wasted no time triggering as a lynch to the neck into an absolutely 'let it fly and who cares who gets hurt' brutal death/thrash breakdown called 'Regurgitate'. I have seen the meanest and fiercest acts over the years, and when you get that rare opportunity to see something this pure going off in front of you, I'll be totally candid, you pinch yourself to make sure that you're really there. The crowd literally went insane with applause after the opener and the band wasted no time digging into the 'hate chest' even deeper for the next cut 'Pogrom' off their new self-released LP "Afterbirth". The band interestingly enough is made up of two main vocalists, Wayne Price and Tyson Montrucchio. Price more than effectively holds down the deep, bass-like roaring, while Montrucchio's intermittant high-pitched yells easily brought to mind a man locked in an insane asylum, screaming for someone to come put a bullet through his head. It is readily apparent that he is the star of the band. And I do not take away one thing from the others, Mike Mosier and Jake Phillips on guitar, Eric Raiche on drums and Kenny Moshier on bass. It's just that Montrucchio himself seems to actually be the one dude in the band who is actually living the crazy way of life he sings about. Himself tatt'd down on both arms and even sporting a jailhouse looking 'Downspell' tattoo across his neck! His performance on stage was so hardcore and pissed off that it almost lulls you into a chaotic-like trance where you can't take your eyes off him. The band next steam rolled through other life horrified songs like 'Insulin', 'Malevolence', '50 Calibar Facelift', 'Submission' and closed it out with the 'wreck yer gut' wrencher to end them all, 'Solidify'. This is a band that runs the gamut in the different metal genres it draws its influence from. They sound death at times, yet totally thrashy, with elements of sludge and grind. At the end of it all, I was more than pleased to finally have taken in a show from real metal soldiers charging their way out of the underground heavy music scene to what will hopefully soon lead them all to absolute glory in the music business.
