Otyg To Be Resurrected And Release New Album

Last month in a look at lesser-known side projects from heavy metal musicians we covered Otyg, a folk metal outfit from Vintersorg (Borknagar, Vintersorg) that last released an album at the tail end of the '90s.

During a recent interview we conducted with Vintersorg in regards to his upcoming new album "Orkan," he revealed that Otyg is now finally being resurrected and the band is in the process of recording a third album and follow-up to the 1999 release "Sagovindars Boning." Vintersorg had this to say during the interview:

Yeah, actually we decided to raise that old troll again. It’s been like 12 or 13 years since we put that band to sleep. We always thought the band wouldn’t be vanished from the face of the earth, we always had this kind of open door to it. For the last 10 years I’ve felt like I didn’t have the inspiration to write that kind of music, because I wrote all the music for that band as well. Lately me and Mattias, he’s also in that band, we started to discuss it and he was really keen on doing a third album.

We actually wrote a third album and did some pre-production on it but we never made it anything more than that. So for him he felt it would be nice to complete the saga. We’re actually recording the third album now, and I don’t know if we’ll be doing anymore, but it feels nice to get this one out. It’s a little bit in a new direction, but still very much sounds like Otyg. It’s interesting for us because we haven’t been touching that ground for so many years.

The full interview will be going online tomorrow. Vintersorg's new album "Orkan" is due out on June 29th, 2012 (EU) and July 10th, 2012 (North America) through Napalm Records.

Borknagar Taps I.C.S. Vortex As Touring Bassist

Norway's Borknagar recently parted ways with bassist Erik Tiwaz (aka Tyr). The band has now announced I.C.S. Vortex (Arcturus, ex-Dimmu Borgir) will be stepping in to handle both bass and vocal duties on the upcoming Borknagar tour dates due to vocalist Vintersorg having other commitments. Borknagar issued the following statement:

"The band is currently working on touring plans for the future. Due to private commitments Vintersorg is unfortunately not able to join the band on the road for the moment being. Because of this, I.C.S. Vortex will step in to the fold to handle vocal and bass for upcoming live activities."

Guitarist Øystein G. Brun comments: "As stated in several interviews the last couple of month’s it’s our firm intention to bring the band’s live activities up a notch in respect for all our fans. There is just no way we can dismiss all the requests we get all over the world. We are currently working on some really interesting touring plans, but unfortunately our brother in music Vintersorg is not able to come along for the moment being due to private commitments. So Vortex being a previous member and always a good friend of the band, it feels great to have him back in the fold in order to execute these plans. Also, I would like to express my deepest admiration for Vintersorg’s open minded and supportive attitude, embracing the idea to pull this off with Vortex in his absence- to make this a genuine and worthy solution for Borknagar.” More...

Vintersorg New Album Release Date, Cover Revealed

VINTERSORG, the Swedish band led by BORKNAGAR frontman Andreas Hedlund (a.k.a. Vintersorg), will release its new album, "Solens Rotter" (English translation: "The Origin of the Sun") on April 27 in Europe and May 22 in the U.S. via Napalm Records. The CD was mixed at Ballerina Audio with the engineer Nils Johansson. Songtitles set to appear on the CD songtitles for the album: "Kosmosaik", "Naturens Myst?r", "Vad Aftonvindens Andning Viskar", "Spirar och Gror", [and] 'Str?lar'.

VINTERSORG previously stated about the new CD, "It has taken some time to complete this album, but it hasn't been about not having ideas; instead it has taken us some time to understand what kind of album we wanted to do and how to reach that vision. A more ethnic approach is obvious but still with a fresh vibe as we see it ourselves, hymn-like passages mixed with soothing parts, acoustic guitars are present as well as harsh black metal elements; all filtered through our Nordic minds. But don't expect 'The Focusing Blur' part II; new ideas are very present but the songs feels very fluent and bear the atmosphere of nature in all its forms."

VINTERSORG recently extended its worldwide recording contract with Napalm Records "to include multiple releases," according to a posting on the Napalm web site.

The follow-up to 2004's "The Focusing Blur", "Solens Rotter" will not feature contributions from Steve DiGiorgio (SADUS, DRAGONLORD, TESTAMENT, DEATH) and drummer Asgeir Mickelson (SPIRAL ARCHITECT, BORKNAGAR, SATYRICON), both of whom performed on the band's last two releases.

Vintersorg's collaboration with BORKNAGAR's Oystein G. Brun (guitars and programming), dubbed CRONIAN, released its debut album, "Terra", in the U.S. in April 2006 via Century Media Records. The CD, which was issued in Europe on March 27, was mastered by Dan Swano at Unisound.

In Flames And The Haunted To Headline Benefit Show

In Flames, The Haunted, Hypocrisy, Lost Horizon and Nifelheim will join forces for a special benefit show, 200 000 Decibel, at Trägårn in Gothenburg, Sweden on September 2. The objective is to raise 200 000 SEK (approximately $27,000) in order to help the founder of the Swedish festival 2000 Decibel.

For the past five years, Lennart Larsson has organized 2000 Decibel, a festival devoted solely to Swedish hard rock and metal. This year's edition was held on May 21-22 and featured a strong line-up, including The Haunted, Hypocrisy, Notre Dame, Cans, Dark Tranquillity, Vintersorg and Pain Of Salvation. Due to stiff competition and extremely bad weather, fewer people than expected turned up and Lennart Larsson lost 200 000 SEK on the event.

The initiative for 200 000 Decibel came from Swedish rock journalist Martin Carlsson. In a column in the newspaper GT, he urged established metal bands to unite for a benefit show, 200 000 Decibel.

"No one has done as much for Swedish hard rock and metal as Lennart Larsson, he started the first metal fanzine in Sweden, Heavy Metal Massacre, in the early Eighties and was the first Swede to interview Metallica. He was one of the reasons why I became a rock journalist in the first place and he's been a great inspiration to the country's hard rock scene for two decades. The mere fact that Lennart has put on a metal festival dedicated to only Swedish bands in a small town in the middle of nowhere shows just how passionate he is about this kind of music." - said Carlsson.

"This is something that people often talk about — helping other people out — but in the end nothing happens. I decided it was time to take matters into my own hands and contacted Edward Janson at the concert agency Motor and local promoter Per Carlsson at PK Musik. Together we’ve put together a bill that is a fine representation of what the Swedish metal scene has to offer. 200 000 Decibel marks In Flames' last performance on home turf this year. Neither Hypocrisy nor Nifelheim have ever performed in Gothenburg. Both The Haunted and Lost Horizon play their hometown for the first time since the return of their original members, vocalist Peter Dolving and guitarist Wojtek Lisicki, respectively. It's fantastic that everyone involved, including the bands, is doing this for free to help out a great guy in need."

"It'd be a real shame if 2000 Decibel went under, because it's one of Sweden's best and nicest festivals," said The Haunted guitarist Patrik Jensen. "Lennart Larsson's interest in and support of Swedish hard rock is unparalleled and therefore if feels great that we can help the festival get back on track again."

Tickets will be on sale on Wednesday July 21 through www.ticnet.se.

The bands are Astral Doors, Count Raven, Draconian, Pain Of Salvation, Persuader, Tad Morose and Vintersorg. Already confirmed are Ablaze My Sorrow, Arise, Morifade, Notre Dame and Wolf.
