Formed: 1991
From: Eskilstuna, Sweden
Last Known Status: Active

Background

Pain of Salvation is a Swedish progressive rock band headed by Daniel Gildenlöw; the band's lyricist, chief composer, guitarist, and lead vocalist. Their sound is characterised by powerful, accentuated guitar work, broad vocal range, abrupt switching between heavy and calm passages, intense syncopation, and polyrhythmic experimentation. Another trademark of the band is that each album is a concept album. Some of the topics addressed in the band's albums include sexuality, war and its effect on family and humanity, environmental issues (such as nuclear power), the forming of the individual, and the nature of God, humankind, and existence.

Thought Chamber Pulls Out Of ProgPower USA

Glenn Harveston, promoter for ProgPower USA, has announced that San Francisco's Thought Chamber has been forced to pull out of this year's festival to be held from September 10-13th, 2014 in Atlanta Georgia.

The following announcement was made by vocalist Ted Leonard: "Ted Leonard here….We regret to announce that, due to my scheduling conflicts, Thought Chamber will not be able to participate in ProgPower USA 2014. I feel terrible about this, but have had unforeseen commitments arise that unfortunately cannot be changed. We are truly honored to have been invited to perform at ProgPower USA. Glenn Harveston has built one of the best progressive metal festivals in the world, and we hope that Glenn will forgive our unforeseen cancellation and allow us to return in the future. This was totally unexpected, and evidence that I've completely overloaded my plate. I would like to personally and publicly apologize to Glenn Harveston, my band mates, and to any ProgPower USA fans that may have purchased tickets solely to see Thought Chamber."

Harveston has named the replacement act as Greek progressive metal band Need. The band released the latest album "Orvam - A Song for Home" in January. As a preview, check out the track "Mother Madness" from the album here: More...

Progressive Nation To Become A Cruise Festival

Progressive Nation is hitting the high seas in 2014! The inaugural sailing will occur on February 18th - 22nd 2014 on the luxurious Norwegian Pearl heading from Miami to Great Stirrup Cay and Freeport, Bahamas. The lineup includes:

Transatlantic, Portnoy Sheehan Macalpine Sherinian, Jon Anderson, Adrian Belew's Power Trio, Devin Townsend, King's X, Spock's Beard, The Flower Kings, Pain Of Salvation, Riverside, Animals As Leaders, The Safety Fire, Tony Harnell & Bumblefoot, Bigelf, Beardfish, The Dear Hunter, Haken, Jolly And Next To None

Progressive Nation founder Mike Portnoy elaborates:

"In 2008 & 2009, I created a touring package called 'Progressive Nation' and with Dream Theater headlining, we did three full tours (two in North America and one in Europe) that showcased a variety of bands that embraced the spirit and musicality of progressive music.

"Well after a 5 year hiatus, I have decided to resurrect Progressive Nation and this time we are taking it to the seas! But rather than a 4 band bill like previous Progressive Nation tours, we have expanded the bill to OVER A DOZEN of today's greatest progressive bands, musicians and artists! (and there may be one or two more still to be confirmed)

"Myself and my former DT bandmate Derek Sherinian have teamed up with Sixthman (who have done incredibly successful cruises with Kid Rock, Lynyrd Skynyrd and the annual Kiss Cruise to name a few) as well as our friends at InsideOut Music and look forward to a very successful inaugural launch of Progressive Nation at Sea Feb 18th thru 22nd 2014. Pain Of Salvation Reveals New Guitarist

Pain of Salvation has issued the following announcement about recruiting a new guitar player:

"We are proud to present the last piece of the puzzle for the upcoming tour line-up – the guitar player.

"First, a little background on the auditions. So, we had applications coming in from the whole world (including a few countries we had barely heard of) and it was a pretty massive task to go through them all and make our choices. From close to a hundred applicants we harshly narrowed it down to five guitar players being invited to our rehearsing room for auditions. One from Sweden, one from the UK, one from Iceland, one from Germany and one from France. These were the top-of-the-crop, and it’s quite telling that they were all lead singers in their respective past or present bands. It was hard to choose, especially between the top two guys. However, when the dust settled, it was to Iceland that we turned, and the magical Ragnar Zolberg. So, without further ado, here he is.

"We are certain that Ragnar will have everything that’s needed to kick your asses on the upcoming tour, and our first four days of rehearsals only strengthened that feeling. He is an excellent guitar player and an outstanding vocalist, and he knows how to make use of those abilities while rocking out on stage. On top of that he is an awesome person. What’s not to like?"

Zolberg also commented on joining the band:

"Holy ravens! what the f**k just happened!? My gratitude and excitement for the upcoming tour is far beyond words and I feel unbelievably privileged to be sharing the stage with one of my favorite bands.

"I’ve been going through the songs during the whole Christmas that I’m spending here in London, but the only guitar I had was my nephew’s guitar…..he’s 2 years old! Let’s just say that it’s a very small one but it sort of keeps in tune so it’s not all bad.

"I can’t wait to start rocking out to the music that we’ve all come to love so dearly and I will devote my whole heart to it!"

Pain Of Salvation Announces Keyboard Player

Pain of Salvation has issued the following announcement about recruiting a new keyboard player:

"Pain of Salvation’s new keyboard player is no stranger for the observant fan. Being quite the renaissance man (as everyone in this bizarre band), he has been all over the place the last year. He played the keyboard in India, the bass in South America and on the European tours, and dammit if he didn’t do the lights in Skellefteå too!"

Vocalist Daniel Gildenlöw commented, "Through the years we have always had problems finding people who can master ONE instrument well enough to play our songs the way they should be played, so needless to say D2 has impressed us by playing both the bass and the keyboard with total conviction. Asking him to join the band was a natural step. Also, band meetings were getting boring with only me and Léo there. The world, meet Daniel “D2? Karlsson"

Daniel also added:

"To be a part of this band is a real honor. I’m very grateful to have been around POS for quite some time, both as a technician and a musician and a fan of course, and suddenly I’m being a part of them for real. It pays off to work your way up:) My intentions is not be the 'new' Fredrik, because there’s only one. And a damn good one! But I’ll do my best to carry the spirit on and bring a new chapter to the history of Pain of Salvation. I’m looking forward to be a part of the future of the best band in the world."

Pain Of Salvation Splits With Johan Hallgren

Pain of Salvation has issued the following announcement about Johan Hallgren deciding to leave the band:

"After 13 years in the band, Johan Hallgren has decided to leave Pain of Salvation to focus on his daughter and wife. He will not leave music altogether, but plans to work with music in a way that allows him to stay at home with his family in Sweden. That means that the band's upcoming Nov/Dec tour together with Opeth will be his last. He will of course be sadly missed, both musically and personally, and very difficult to replace. So, if you know someone who sings and plays the crap out of basically anyone, send him or her our way - we might just have a thing or two to discuss."

Johan also added, "I'm leaving the band with both joy and sadness. I need to stay close to my daughter and my child-to-come, they will be my greatest concern along with my wife. I will miss everyone I've met during the years, and the band will continue to have a warm place in my heart. So finally, treat yourself and all that surrounds you with respect, and stay with POS - the greatest band on the planet! Sorry if I disappoint you, I miss you already!"

"For 'Road Salt' we have followed one northern star: be brave in every decision. Part two is as brave, unique and uncompromising as the first one. But don't take it from us, we are as subjective as all reviewers out there. Let the album speak for itself - become subjective you too!"
