Dream Theater Reveals New Album Details

American progressive metal veterans Dream Theater have announced that they will release their brand new, self-titled album through Roadrunner Records on September 24th. This will be their second record to feature drummer Mike Mangini, who replaced founding member, Mike Portnoy in 2011 and debuted with the band on their previous album, "A Dramatic Turn Of Events." Speaking on the new album, guitarist John Petrucci stated:

"I see every new album as an opportunity to start over. To either build or improve upon a direction that has been evolving over time or to completely break new ground. This is the first self-titled album of our career and there is nothing I can think of that makes a statement of musical and creative identity stronger than that. We’ve fully explored all of the elements that make us unique, from the epic and intense to the atmospheric and cinematic. We’re incredibly excited about Dream Theater and can’t wait for everyone to hear it."

Dream Theater will be available in a wide range of distinctive versions, including standard and special edition CDs, 180 Gram Vinyl Double LP, and a Limited Edition Box Set. Pre-orders are scheduled to get underway sometime in July at the Roadrunner Records Webstore. A world tour in support of the album is currently being planned and details will be revealed shortly The band has also posted a short, "In Studio" video, which can be viewed below. More...

Sunday Old School: Dream Theater

With ProgPower USA wrapping up yesterday, along with our pledge to cover more progressive acts in Sunday Old School this year, it seemed like a fitting time to look at one of the biggest names in modern progressive metal, Dream Theater. Dream Theater was originally formed under the name, Majesty in 1985 by guitarist John Petrucci, bass player John Myung and drummer Mike Portnoy, who met each other while students at the Berklee College of Music in Boston. They filled the remaining slots in the band when Petruccis old friend, Kevin Moore joined on keyboards and vocalist Chris Collins was recruited after the band heard him singing Queensryche. The hectic schedules of the musicians resulted in them all leaving education to focus on the group and they soon recorded some songs as demos, which sold out in a matter of months. In November 1986, Majesty decided to fire Collins and after a year of searching, they appointed Charlie Dominici as their new singer, despite him being considerably older than the other members. They were to experience another change after Dominicis recruitment, when a band from Las Vegas, also named Majesty, threatened legal action if they did not change their name, leading them to choose the new moniker, Dream Theater, which was named after a theater that Portnoys father used to run.

With their new, more visually stimulating name and a stronger work ethic, the band eventually caught the attention of Mechanic Records, a division of MCA Records, and released their first album, "When Dream and Day Unite" through the label in 1989. The album was met with lacklustre reviews and the label broke many promises they had made, leaving Dream Theater to continue performing mostly around New York. The group soon made two key decisions, with the first being to fire Dominici due to what they perceived as his limited vocal range, and performed with him for the last time opening for English prog legends, Marillion. Their second item of business was to be released from Mechanic, which they eventually achieved. More...

Roadrunner Bands Talk Supportive Moms

This Sunday is Mother's Day, and Roadrunner Records though it would be nice to let some of the label artists represent for their moms, who supported their kids' musical ambitions early on. Roadrunner asked two simple questions - "Does your mom like/support your band?" and "What's your mom's favorite song by your band?"

Max Cavalera, Sepultura/Nailbomb/Soulfly/Cavalera Conspiracy: "Yes, my mom was our first big supporter. She let everybody camp in our house. Our house was always full of metal kids. Her favorite song is 'Innerself' [from Sepultura's Beneath the Remains]. I think she likes the lyrics, because it was about when I was living in Brazil and she remembers that period of our life."

Tyler Connolly, Theory of a Deadman: "My mother is a big supporter of our band, of course, and always wants to make sure we wear our seat belts on our tour bus. I don't think she has a favorite song, but always wonders where I got my terrible potty mouth from. We usually roll through her home town once a year and she's the best at wrangling sluts for me. I love my mom."

Phil Demmel, Machine Head: "My mom, being a musician, was supportive of my interest in music from the word go. Her and my father cultivated my 'hobby' doing everything from matching me dollar for dollar on my first guitar, videotaping my earliest gigs at the seediest Bay Area bars/clubs, to standing on stage with me in front of 60,000 people in her native Portugal when we opened for Metallica. She loves our acoustic material. Our songs 'Descend the Shades of NIght' and 'Darkness Within' are favorites." More...

Mike Portnoy Alleges Dream Theater Plagiarized

Former Dream Theater drummer Mike Portnoy has stirred up controversy by hinting that Dream Theater may have borrowed a bit too much influence from the band Red. He alleges that the Red song "Feed the Machine" is incredibly similar to the Dream Theater tune "Build Me Up, Break Me Down." This series of quotes came about on Portnoy's ProgBlog when he responded to a thread about John Petrucci's top album pick of 2011 on the Roadrunner site. For the full article, go to this site.

"Check out the first song on [John Petrucci's] fave album of the year…. WOW, the arrangement and orchestration sounds awfully familiar!! Surely it must be an intentional 'nugget' for the fans… It couldn't possibly be blatant formula plagiarism, now could it…?? I just have to laugh…Hey…I'm not trying to start a war…. and I am indeed totally in a happy place in my life and career… I'm just merely making an observation and posting openly on my own forum like I always have and always will… If anybody ELSE wants to blow this up, it's their choice and doing…not mine! And PS – to defend music that I co-wrote/arranged (that were cited previously in this thread), there's a difference between 'inspiration corner'/'copping a certain vibe' and blatantly re-writing an existing song or formula section by section…"

Dream Theater Drummer Checks In

Dream Theater drummer Mike Mangini has checked in with an update in which he discusses the groups recent Grammy nomination amongst other things. His message reads as follows:

"I seriously played my two best shows/solos (on December 1st in San Diego, California and on December 2nd in Anaheim, California) while being the sickest I've been in 20-30 years. But not enough to jeopardize me too much or affect the show negatively. I don't know how that happens. My apologies for not being able to speak much, or for coughing at the paid pre-show pic taking. Now you know why. I didn't, and couldn't, call friends, my family, my wife, nobody...

"It was weird to try so hard to speak. All of you that play must've experienced this before. How can we be so sick, then play like not too much is wrong? It must be a love of overcoming challenges and helping the team. I guess that's how athletes do it. I honestly curled up in a ball after the show and didn't think I'd make it out of there. More...

Periphery Announces Dream Theater Off-Dates

As was previously announced, Periphery will be touring as direct support to the legendary Dream Theater throughout Europe from January 23rd through February 26th. Today the band members announced that they will play two headlining shows amidst those dates. Brussels, Belgium, and Prague, Czech Republic, have been added to the band's schedule.

Following the "Frak The Gods" North American tour, the group has now officially announce its newest member Mark Holcomb (he had a project with Misha Mansoor called Haunted Shores and filled in on the "Frak The Gods" tour) on guitars.

Misha Mansoor states: "We are happy to announce that Mark Holcomb (Haunted Shores) will be joining the Periphery ranks as a full time guitarist! He toured with with us our headlining run of Australia, our Frak The Gods US headliner and our 2 shows opening for Dream Theater, and we feel that we have found a perfect fit for us both live and in the studio. We are extremely excited to have him on board, and cant wait to show you all the cool new music we have been working on together! Since we made arrangements for the tour before Mark was inducted, our good friend Nolly (Red Seas Fire) will be filling in on the European tour opening for Dream Theater. However that will be the last tour we do with a fill-in guitarist, as Mark will join on full time after that!"

Thomas Murphy (bass) adds: "The most important thing about a band is the chemistry between its members. We've all known Mark for years and are very proud to announce him as our newest member. Not only is he an amazing writer and guitarist, but also an amazing person. We can't wait to see what the future holds for the band now that he has joined."

Mark Holcomb further comments: "I couldn't be more excited as not only have these guys been great friends of mine for a long time, but I consider every last one of them musical siblings in a sense. Each of us brings something different to the table and I can't wait to see what we can accomplish."

Periphery has the following upcoming tour dates: More...
