Sometimes there are interesting bits in the metal world that aren’t exactly newsworthy on their own, might not qualify as “just for fun,” or might even be too old to warrant a new post of its own. So here’s a round-up of some interesting metal bits around the ‘net this week:

MetalSucks recently conducted an interview with guitarist Kirk Windstein of Crowbar, Down, and Kingdom of Sorrow. Windstein addressed the recent news surrounding his decision to drop off Kingdom of Sorrow's Ozzfest stint in favor of treating his alcohol problem. He also explained the myriad delays that affected the upcoming Down DVD "Diary of a Madband," updated fans about the forthcoming new Crowbar album, and commented on Crowbar's legacy as a band that influences today's young crop of metal bands. Excerpts from the interview follow.
On leaning on his bandmates for support and advice during the recovery process:
Kirk: Yeah, totally. I’ve talked to Rex [Brown, Down bassist] about it because he’s dealt with a lot of problems himself. There’s not a person in any of my bands that hasn’t experienced it from time to time with the exception of Nicky and Charlie from Kingdom of Sorrow (the drummer and guitar player); they’ve never had a drink or tried a drug in their life. Everyone else in my bands, in Down and Jamey from Kingdom and the guys in Crowbar, have all at times had issues with stuff. Every person is different, and it’s a matter of keeping yourself healthy and not letting it get out of control. For me, it got out of control. Would I be a fool and a liar to sit here and say that I don’t think about it? It’s a normal thing to always think that you can control it. That’s what the battle of it is. It’s like “okay, I’m home. I’m detoxed. I get it. I’m in the right headspace. I’m physically and mentally in the right place and headed in the right direction.” It’s a matter of you realizing that you doing what you need to do is basically what it comes down to.
On a new Down album:
Kirk: 2011 I would say. Yeah. Something for sure. We’re not even there yet, so I think that’s totally feasible. Obviously not this year because it would have to be signed, sealed, delivered and done already. It’s not there by any means. It’s always going to happen and Down is always going to be there. So that’s a good thing.More...
Down has posted a teaser trailer online for the band's upcoming live CD/DVD release "Diary of a Mad Band." The clip can be viewed below.
Members of New Orleans metal supergroup Down have commented on the release of their forthcoming live album "Diary Of A Mad Band." "Diary Of A Mad Band" is set for release in the U.S. on October 5th, 2010 through Down Records. The album also contains a bonus DVD featuring a different setlist than the one featured on the CD.
Philip Anselmo commented by saying:
"This is a semi-ugly glimpse into what would end up the perfect building blocks to a much more prosperous future! Raw, distorted, unpredictable, and with a freshly mended spine in tow, these shows were desperately important to us as a cohesive unit. Take this trip through the old days with us at your own risk, and don’t forget to bring some aspirin!"
Pepper Keenan had this to say:
"The DVD is an in-depth look at what five boys from the wrong side of the tracks can achieve when motivated by the will to escape hard times, fueled by an unexplainable quest to destroy live and be embraced by the love of fans whom we had not had the pleasure of meeting yet. This is how it’s supposed to be: rock solid." More...

Kingdom Of Sorrow has announced that founding member Kirk Windstein, who is also a founding member of Crowbar and Down, will not be taking part in the band's upcoming tour dates due to health issues. In his place will be Type O Negative guitarist Kenny Kickey.
Kirk Windstein states: "Hey all, Kirk here. Just wanted to let everyone know that I will be taking a much needed break and will not be joining my bros in KOS for Ozzfest. I have entered the AA program and am turning over a new leaf. 25 years of gigging and touring has taken its toll and my drinking is now preventing me from being the healthiest, best player that I can be. It’s been a fun ride, but I’m ready to tackle this sober and look forward to being at the top of my game with all of my projects! I am happy to say that Kenny Hickey will once again be filling my spot for these 8 shows. Thanks Kenny, I love you bro!!! Thanks to everyone for their support. All my best, Kirk Windstein."
Jamey Jasta adds: "The road is no place for Kirk right now. He has begun to address his problems so he can lead a happy and healthy life and continue to rock with Down, CROWBAR and Kingdom Of Sorrow. I only want the best for him and I feel like sitting this tour out is a step in the right path."
Arson Anthem, the band featuring former Pantera, Superjoint Ritual and current Down frontman Phil Anselmo, along with Hank Williams III (also formerly of Superjoint Ritual), Mike IX Williams (Eyehategod, Outlaw Order) and Colin Yeo of Ponykiller fame, has announced that they will be releasing their debut full length album, "Insecurity Notoriety" on October 12th through Anselmo's Housecore Records.
Anselmo comments: "I'm not sure what it is... but when Hank III, Colin, Mike and I get into "Arson" mode, time stops. We know the mission is to write unforgiving hardcore inspired by a slew of '80's bands... but the result is its own animal, yet not too terrible removed from the genuine article.
"With that said, Insecurity Notoriety is like listening to an old favorite blast from the skanking past... vicious, snotty, grating and anthemic! I know it's typical to call a modern-day hardcore band 'fresh' or 'different', especially when it's your band, but... it is! This effort makes our first EP sound like child's play, as it should. Play it over and over! Piss everyone off!"
Sludge metal legends CROWBAR have signed a worldwide deal with E1 Music. The band will be releasing a new full-length album later this fall. "CROWBAR is very excited to have landed this deal with E1 Music! We have always been very proud of what we do and the new record will not disappoint and of our die hard fans." says front man and guitar player Kirk Windstein.
The forthcoming album will be the follow up to the band’s last album, "Lifesblood for the Downtrodden," which was released out in 2005. Windstein continues. "Big thanks to Jamey Jasta, Steve Ross and the legal team at E1 Music. Get ready, with a real label behind us we will crush!"
E1 Music Vice President of Metal Scott Givens adds, "CROWBAR have influenced a generation of great bands and E1 is fully committed to making this the band’s biggest selling record of its long and storied career."
Kirk Windstein formed CROWBAR in 1991. Since that time, the band's sound has profoundly influenced a new generation of metal acts the world over. Weinstein is also a key member of KINGDOM OF SORROW (with HATEBREED front man Jamey Jasta) and DOWN.
MetalSucks contributor Corey Mitchell recently announced he'd be helping Pantera/Down front man Philip Anselmo write his autobiography. Mitchell revealed some details about the writing process in a recent review of a Warbeast show in Dallas, at which Anslemo made a guest appearance. An excerpt follows:
"Anselmo has also given me carte blanche to talk to anyone from his past to either fill in the blanks on some stories he may have forgotten, confirm what he remembers, and also to shoot down any stories he may not have a complete grasp on. He also told his buddies from the early days of Pantera to be brutally honest with me, because he wants nothing but the truth to go out to the readers – the good, the bad, and the downright fuckin’ ugly."
