Liv Kristine Busy Producing Second Solo Album

Leaves' Eyes frontwoman Liv Kristine is busy producing her second solo album. The well-expected follower to "Deus ex Machina" will be called "Enter my Religion".

"The recordings are going very well. We have produced so many new songs that it will be hard to make a decision concerning the final album tracks. The songs are very diverse - you will hear soft ballads, cadanced pop songs and also rocking tracks. It's all so interesting for me as we are working with some very exotic instruments. This is a new challenge for me as an artist because I can realize so many new ideas I've been dreaming of for a long time." says Liv.

"Enter My Religion" is due late October.

Liv Kristine Talks About Upcoming Solo Album

Renowned female vocalist Liv Kristine (Leaves' Eyes, ex-Theatre of Tragedy) recently spoke to Metal Temple magazine's Michael Dalakos while promoting the new Leaves' Eyes release, "Vinland Saga". Liv spoke about a number of topics, including her upcoming second solo album that is going to be released via Roadrunner Records. A couple of excerpts from the interview follow:

Metal Temple: [There are] rumors [that you will] be releasing a second solo album. What can you tell us about this?

Liv Kristine: "Yes, it is true, there will be a second solo album. It will be released around autumn. I signed a record deal with Roadrunner Records. A dream came true for me since I had a lot of trouble with my first company. I had to fight for my rights in the court. I was really sad when I realized that some people wanted to put the dollar sign on my forehead. I don't want to be a Barbie Doll in the music industry. I want to write my own lyrics, be part of the recording process..."

Metal Temple: Can we assume it will be in the same vein as your first solo attempt?

Liv Kristine: "Yes. This CD will follow the steps of the first album. It will be quite atmospheric and dark, but I can tell you that I collaborated with other producers like Peter Tägtgren [Pain, Hypocrisy], so expect some very interesting combinations of music! There will be some up tempo songs for the album."

Metal Temple: With your previous band [Theatre of Tragedy] you have managed pretty much to bring a revolution to the heavy metal community. Do you think that you can achieve something equally great with your current band [Leaves' Eyes]? Generally how difficult is it to sound original today?

Liv Kristine: "I think it is very difficult to sound different, to achieve your own sound so people can understand what a band is playing after listening for a couple of seconds. Most bands today try to adopt elements from their favorite bands and if they are lucky enough to blend them with some elements of their own hoping for a personal sound. When you run a band like Atrocity or Leaves' Eyes it is very difficult to stick to your sound when many bands try to sound like you. Personally I believe that the best thing one band can do is to stick to its sound and be as much original as possible. You must try to develop your sound at one level but never forget where you come from.

"That was the main problem with Theatre of Tragedy. They have created a very personal sound. There was a dramatic difference between 'Aegis' and 'Musique'. They didn’t want to have any connection with their past. For example their singer was interested mostly in Eminem (!!!), so the band had a break with their past and started working on totally different material. This was very difficult for me. I will never try something like this with Leaves' Eyes."

Liv Kristine Makes Peace With Theatre Of Tragedy

When Liv Kristine Espenaes Krull was relieved of her duties as vocalist for Theatre Of Tragedy in 2003, she was just as shocked as her fans. When she returned with Leaves’ Eyes a year later, fans were surprised to learn she was still in the dark as to why she had been let go, her former TOT bandmates having cut all ties with her. In addition, Liv had been replaced by The Crest vocalist, a young lady by the name of Nell. Rather than dwell on the matter, Liv focused all her energy on Leaves’ Eyes debut album, Lovelorn, which led to an extensive European tour at the end of 2004. A three gig stint in her native Norway marked Liv’s first live appearances at home since getting the boot from TOT, and resulted in unexpected and much needed closure. More...

Did Evanescences's Success Open Doors For Others?

Freelance writer Bryan Reesman has submitted the following report to GRAMMY.com:

If the multi-platinum success of EVANESCENCE proved to narrow-minded rock jocks that female-fronted metal bands were viable, a fresh wave of melodic European headbangers should cement that affirmation, with their distinct blend of heavy guitars, symphonic underpinnings and soaring female vocals. Thanks to the breakthrough of "Fallen", like-minded groups that court gothic and classical influences are starting to find success on American shores.

"For quite a number of years we've personally loved that sound and tried to champion it," declares Marco Barbieri, president of the Century Family of labels that includes Century Media and Nuclear Blast. "We initially liked the European, gothic-inspired stuff that came out of some of the doom and death metal bands of the early '90s. When women started joining these bands, they made it that much more exciting and compelling."

Their sounds are quite distinct. NIGHTWISH blends gothic brooding with intense guitars and classical bombast. Their recent album, "Once", features orchestra, choir and a Native American flute player. LACUNA COIL play gothic-tinged heavy rock that invokes a more aggressive Evanescence (and they have been around much longer). LEAVES' EYES, lead by former THEATRE OF TRAGEDY singer Liv Kristine, serve up dreamy, medieval-style metal. All of these bands employ lush keyboards and often contrast their beautiful female singing with harsh male growls normally reserved for death metal. That latter concept may not sound commercial, but EVANESCENCE may have paved the way for its acceptance through the male rap-metal exchanges of "Bring Me To Life".

Odin Thompson, label manager for Napalm Records USA and Moribund Records, sees a basic appeal for these groups — they write great music." These bands bring that heavy edge but inject it with melody and arrangements that have been long lost from rock and roll ," he asserts. "They also offer light to the normally dark world of heavy metal, which makes them special amongst their peers." Thompson believes this subgenre has the potential for tremendous commercial success at a major label level, something Napalm has strongly believed in for years with acts like SINS OF THY BELOVED, TRISTANIA and SIRENIA.

"I'm sure the majors are probably working on their own [groups]," surmises Barbieri. "I feared that a lot of manufactured, female-fronted bands would be coming out after the first EVANESCENCE single. Thankfully we've been spared that from the corporations, and it's being done the right way. Those that have been doing it [awhile] are gaining presence and profile."

The most obvious example of such visibility is Italy's LACUNA COIL, whose two-year-old album "Comalies" scanned more than 200,000 units domestically, cracking the Billboard Top 200 for several weeks last year after extensive grassroots development on radio, video play on Fuse and MTV2, and tours with P.O.D. and Ozzfest.

Atrocity, Leaves' Eyes Attacked By French Police

Atrocity and Leaves' Eyes claim to have been attacked by French police after a show in Paris. This led to the arrest of Atrocity frontman Alexander Krull, who was also injured in the fracas, among a number of others. They were eventually released without charge, or explanation.

Atrocity And Leaves Eyes Attacked By French Police

After their grand finale show of the Atlantis Lovelorn Tour in La Locomotive, Paris, Nov. 28, Atrocity and Leaves' Eyes experienced an arbitrary infringement by the French police.

Right after crew and band had finished the loading of their bus in front of La Locomotive and the adjacent varieté Moulin Rouge, policemen appeared and told the bus driver to leave the street immediately. Due to traffic jam this was not possible at once. The policemen started to speak in a very aggressive tone that culminated in the threat of arresting the bus driver. Moreover, they took his papers away, thus Liv Kristine and Alexander Krull complained about the rude behaviour of the police. Then, suddenly a bunch of policemen, some in civil dresses, rushed the bus and attacked the musicians. As a result of their action, Alex Krull was injured, as several policemen beat him and violently pulled him out of the bus and down to the grown. Also, Liv Kristine was thrown against the wall of the bus and was hurt, too. Without any explanations, Alex Krull was arrested, along with him bus driver Helge, the Dutch tour guide Harald and the German journalist Robert Suß who had only tried to calm the policemen and keep them from attacking Liv Kristine again. They were all arrested in front of hundreds of visitors at Moulin Rouge and other clubs who witnessed the happening. The four of them were taken to the police station, where they had to stay for about three hours without any explanation for the arrest, any hearing or announcing of their rights. Only intensive pressure from the German embassy lead to their release. Still the police gave no explanation for their aggressive treatment, nor any excuse.
All these facts concerning these inconceivable happenings will be announced to both the German Foreign Bureau and the Head of Police in Paris.
