Did Evanescences's Success Open Doors For Others?
Freelance writer Bryan Reesman has submitted the following report to GRAMMY.com:
If the multi-platinum success of EVANESCENCE proved to narrow-minded rock jocks that female-fronted metal bands were viable, a fresh wave of melodic European headbangers should cement that affirmation, with their distinct blend of heavy guitars, symphonic underpinnings and soaring female vocals. Thanks to the breakthrough of "Fallen", like-minded groups that court gothic and classical influences are starting to find success on American shores.
"For quite a number of years we've personally loved that sound and tried to champion it," declares Marco Barbieri, president of the Century Family of labels that includes Century Media and Nuclear Blast. "We initially liked the European, gothic-inspired stuff that came out of some of the doom and death metal bands of the early '90s. When women started joining these bands, they made it that much more exciting and compelling."
Their sounds are quite distinct. NIGHTWISH blends gothic brooding with intense guitars and classical bombast. Their recent album, "Once", features orchestra, choir and a Native American flute player. LACUNA COIL play gothic-tinged heavy rock that invokes a more aggressive Evanescence (and they have been around much longer). LEAVES' EYES, lead by former THEATRE OF TRAGEDY singer Liv Kristine, serve up dreamy, medieval-style metal. All of these bands employ lush keyboards and often contrast their beautiful female singing with harsh male growls normally reserved for death metal. That latter concept may not sound commercial, but EVANESCENCE may have paved the way for its acceptance through the male rap-metal exchanges of "Bring Me To Life".
Odin Thompson, label manager for Napalm Records USA and Moribund Records, sees a basic appeal for these groups — they write great music." These bands bring that heavy edge but inject it with melody and arrangements that have been long lost from rock and roll ," he asserts. "They also offer light to the normally dark world of heavy metal, which makes them special amongst their peers." Thompson believes this subgenre has the potential for tremendous commercial success at a major label level, something Napalm has strongly believed in for years with acts like SINS OF THY BELOVED, TRISTANIA and SIRENIA.
"I'm sure the majors are probably working on their own [groups]," surmises Barbieri. "I feared that a lot of manufactured, female-fronted bands would be coming out after the first EVANESCENCE single. Thankfully we've been spared that from the corporations, and it's being done the right way. Those that have been doing it [awhile] are gaining presence and profile."
The most obvious example of such visibility is Italy's LACUNA COIL, whose two-year-old album "Comalies" scanned more than 200,000 units domestically, cracking the Billboard Top 200 for several weeks last year after extensive grassroots development on radio, video play on Fuse and MTV2, and tours with P.O.D. and Ozzfest.

Leaves' Eyes To Release New Album In May
German gothic metal outfit LEAVES' EYES, featuring members of Theatre Of Tragedy and Atrocity, have posted the following update:
May 30th will be the date to release Leaves’ Eyes fans from waiting: The new album “Vinland Saga“ will be in stores. The sextet will enchant their audience with another fantastic and mystic concept album which will take you through its music and lyrics on a wonderful journey into long-forgotten times. With the use of various classical instruments “Vinland Saga” will be a unique pleasure for your ears. With the evolution of the typical Leaves’ Eyes elements the album will have a diverse sound.
Prior to this a mini-CD for the price of a single will be released. It will contain 5 unreleased tracks including the excellent title track of the single and a demo version of another song as an appetizer for “Vinland Saga”. Within the next weeks the shooting for the second video clip of Leaves’ Eyes will take place.
New Atrocity & Leaves' Eyes Drummer
The new drummer of ATROCITY and LEAVES' EYES is Moritz Neuner (a.o. Graveworm, Darkwell, Abigor). The production of the new LEAVES' EYES record has just started and the first drumtakes are already done. Also ATROCITY work on songs for a new album.
On related news, Atrocity's frontman Alex Krull is currently working on a remix for the CRADLE OF FILTH's song "Nymphetamine" ( featuring guest vocalist LIV KRISTINE), which is one of the nominees in the Best Metal Performance category for the GRAMMY Award 2005.
Atrocity, Leaves' Eyes Attacked By French Police
Atrocity and Leaves' Eyes claim to have been attacked by French police after a show in Paris. This led to the arrest of Atrocity frontman Alexander Krull, who was also injured in the fracas, among a number of others. They were eventually released without charge, or explanation.
Atrocity And Leaves Eyes Attacked By French Police
After their grand finale show of the Atlantis Lovelorn Tour in La Locomotive, Paris, Nov. 28, Atrocity and Leaves' Eyes experienced an arbitrary infringement by the French police.
Right after crew and band had finished the loading of their bus in front of La Locomotive and the adjacent varieté Moulin Rouge, policemen appeared and told the bus driver to leave the street immediately. Due to traffic jam this was not possible at once. The policemen started to speak in a very aggressive tone that culminated in the threat of arresting the bus driver. Moreover, they took his papers away, thus Liv Kristine and Alexander Krull complained about the rude behaviour of the police. Then, suddenly a bunch of policemen, some in civil dresses, rushed the bus and attacked the musicians. As a result of their action, Alex Krull was injured, as several policemen beat him and violently pulled him out of the bus and down to the grown. Also, Liv Kristine was thrown against the wall of the bus and was hurt, too. Without any explanations, Alex Krull was arrested, along with him bus driver Helge, the Dutch tour guide Harald and the German journalist Robert Suß who had only tried to calm the policemen and keep them from attacking Liv Kristine again. They were all arrested in front of hundreds of visitors at Moulin Rouge and other clubs who witnessed the happening. The four of them were taken to the police station, where they had to stay for about three hours without any explanation for the arrest, any hearing or announcing of their rights. Only intensive pressure from the German embassy lead to their release. Still the police gave no explanation for their aggressive treatment, nor any excuse.
All these facts concerning these inconceivable happenings will be announced to both the German Foreign Bureau and the Head of Police in Paris.

Cradle Of Filth New Video Features Liv Kristine
CRADLE OF FILTH bassist Dave Pybus has posted the following update on the band's official web site:
“The new album is finished and the promo tour has started which saw me and Dani travel through Cologne - Germany, Stockholm - Sweden, Amsterdam - Holland, Milan - Italy and New York - USA. There is a 6 track CD featuring unmixed and unmastered songs gone out to the press which rumour has it can be downloaded on the net. I wanna personally thank whoever did this for us as it's helped the promotion of Nymphetamine a thousand fold and we now hope to go on and sell a million copies due to people downloading our songs before we put them on the website. Cheers for that. I'll buy you a beer if we ever meet. You can officially download the title track for us when it appears on the RESIDENT EVIL soundtrack later this month. Thanks.
One thing not many people have heard so far is our BATHORY 'Bestial Lust' cover, which is set to appear on Japanese release of Nymphetamine as an extra track. We did this before Bathory mainman Quorthon died but we'd still like to think of it as a tribute to them. Maybe this track will appear on our special edition early next year, so rest of the world... don't worry.
The video shoot for 'Nymphetamine' takes place this week in London at a secret location and [ex- THEATRE OF TRAGEDY and current LEAVES' EYES singer] Liv Kristine WILL be featured in the video. Dani tells us: 'It's sort of a murder ballad. The vibe of it is going to be like you are watching theatre. It's going to be very Shakespearian, but the lead characters are actually both females, so there is going to be a slight lesbian kink to it.' Nice... I spent some of today choosing the models for the video.More...

"In connection with this album, I feel totally free as an artist and singer! It's a pleasure and it makes so much fun to work on it, and at Mastersound Studio I feel particularly well as these rooms have become something like a second home for me. Especially now, at these emotional times in which we are, it feels wonderful to record an album like this, due to the fact that it is based on a concept where deep feelings come together. It is a perfect medium to escape from every-day life. Personally I believe that "Lovelorn" is going to be a fantastic album - maybe the best production I've ever taken part in! And I'm sure the people out there will appreciate our work!"
