Roadburn Festival and the Church of Ra are certainly no strangers, and when Roadburn's 2017 curator John Dyer Baizley was enthusiastic about having Amenra as part of his event, the band knew it was a no-brainer to return to the Roadburn stage.
Baizley comments: "As I round out the lineup for my curated stages at the upcoming Roadburn Festival 2017, I'm again thrilled to announce one of the last acts I've booked: the uncontested visionary of monochromatic heaviness, Amenra.
"The last time I witnessed an Amenra performance was at Roadburn 2013, when they could still fit (barely) inside Het Patronaat. The line out the door was hundreds of show-goers long, and I was somehow able to force my way inside to see the band perform. To say they blew us all away would be a grossly undersold miscalculation. They set a new standard for me that afternoon, demonstrating just how forward-thinking and discovery-rich DIY music can be; a transcendent marriage of heaviness, artistry, non-linearity, energy, and soul which vaulted from AMENRA's stage and through the audience. Amenra is currently recording a new studio album, titled "Mass VI," once again with Billy Anderson (Eyehategod, Neurosis, Om, Swans) in the snowy Belgian Ardennes. The album will see release later this year via Neurot Recordings, with more details to be confirmed.
Meanwhile, following the release of "Alive" - Amenra's live acoustic album recorded at Ancienne Belgique, in Brussels, Belgium - the band will, for the first time, dedicate a full tour to those acoustic sounds across Europe.
Commencing February 16th and entirely stripped back from any electric mass, dates for the upcoming Feb / March trek are as follows: More...
On the same day Amenra plays an acoustic set at Roadburn Festival, presenting the entirely acoustic new album “Alive,” the Belgian post-metal collective has shared a new song from the record, a cover of Tool’s original “Parabol.”
About this cover song, vocalist Colin H Van Eeckhout commented: “One cannot deny that Tool has always been a huge influence to us and me as a singer. They wrote albums, slowly, scarce, but when they released an album, it felt like they had written it especially for me.
"It seems there was always a perfect timing, for instance they released 'Lateralus' on the 15th of May 2001, my 22nd birthday and on the same day I buried my father. The song 'Parabol' perfectly described the wake, five nights before, the moment he died in my arms and the words that went through my head that instant." More...
Belgium post-metal/sludge outfit Amenra has just released a new music video for the acoustic version of the track “Razoreater,” which is set to appear on the band's new picture split 10” with fellow countrymen Madensuyu.
Check out the video below, and the split is to be released via Consouling Sounds this Friday, August 15th. Pre-orders are still available at this location.
The live track was recorded by Lander Cluyse at Hearse Studio, Belgium and mastered by Chris Common (Isis, Chelsea Wolfe) at Twin Hills and the video was directed by Nathalie Teirlinck of independent production company Savage Film. More...
Neurot Recordings act Amenra has just released a stunningly personal thirteen-minute-long video for the epic track, “À Mon Âme.” Check it out below, courtesy of Nowness.com.
Amenra teamed up with fashion photographer Willy Vanderperre and director of photography for the video, taken from most recent LP, "Mass V." It may not be what you have come to expect from the cult crafters of discordance, but what is Amenra if not a master of defying expectation?
The band comments: "It is not at all like the sort of visuals we usually present; it is more a case study, or a visual interpretation of the band, a little piece of concept art, if you will. The idea they [Willy Vanderperre and director of photography Nicolas Karakatsanis] had was stripping us of everything we had – ‘what if we took it all away from them?’, ‘what if we took them from their comfort zone?’. No shadows or darkness to hide in, dark imagery, props or metaphors or symbols to use."
"Compare it to what we sometimes or mostly do with our music – stick to the mere necessary, take a minimalistic approach of a whole. What do we really need? To create a certain ‘feeling’ of emotion. For us, it was an extremely interesting cooperation. We normally keep our guard extremely high, never give something out of our hands, to keep it as close to our skin as humanly possible – that’s exactly what they did as well, literally…It was awkward, uneasy, and very confronting for us to see, yet one of the most interesting things we did lately, and an honor for us to be working with such talented and inspiring people. ‘Under a watchtower of punishing light.’”
Amenra will be hitting the road again next month. Dates are available after the jump. More...

Belgium’s sludge ministers Amenra are preparing for the worldwide disbursement of their newest studio full-length "Mass V" this Autumn, their first for Neurot Recordings. The following press release was issued about the band:
"Since their 1999 inception, Amenra have infiltrated underground music communities with their grand style of organic sludge/doom metal through a plethora of LPs, EPs, and splits with Hessian, TBHR, Oathbreaker and others, through a variety of independent labels including Anvil Of Fury, Sound Devastation, Hypertension and their own Church of Ra imprint. Intense touring and festival appearances across Europe and beyond helped these diverse recordings transform into the live setting, captivating visual effects always an imperative element of the band’s on-stage dominance.
"Neurot announced Amenra’s induction into their clan in July of 2011, which was followed directly by the band’s second European tour in support of the mighty Neurosis, the bond between both parties strengthening. Last November the members of Amenra wandered through the countries neighboring Belgium in search of the perfect inspiration for their next studio opus. The journey led them to the village of Wissant in North France, where upon discovering vast lands still decimated by and littered with carnage from World War II battles invoked the proper stimulation the band needed to create Mass V.
"In May the band entered the expansive La Chapelle Studio to create Mass V, assisted by engineer Billy Anderson (Eyehategod, Neurosis, Melvins, Sleep, Swans, etc.) to bring their sonic attack to its most crushing. With possibly their most inspired material to date in hand, brandishing forty minutes of material through four movements, they utilized the photography of Stefaan Temmerman and the talents of Webecameaware for the layout, Amenra completed their vision and are preparing for the world to hear this sonic tour de force. Amenra has revealed the cover artwork for new album "Mass V," which can be viewed below, and the following press release was also issued:
"To Amenra, aesthetics are not merely supplementary to the musical experience but essential to it, and for their monumental new album Mass V, they have surpassed themselves. Today the band has proudly unveiled the artwork and track listing for the album which will see the light of day on November 27th, their first for new label home Neurot Recordings. All photos contained in the layout for Mass V were taken by Stefaan Temmerman and the art itself was made and assembled by Webecameaware."
On the subject of the album’s visual aspects, the band revealed the following personal testimonial about how it came to be: "In November 2011 we went out wandering through our own and neighbouring countries. Looking for the perfect setting for the artwork to the new album. After a couple of days our trail ended at the village of Wissant in North France. The site is a gathering of destroyed bunkers from the second World War. The force and strength coming from these weathered constructions was overwhelming. Concrete blasted to pieces, hundreds of bullet holes everywhere, the salt and sand were once covered in blood. We drew respect from these stone temples, this once, was a world of pain. We stayed overnight at the site and slept on one of the bunkers just so we could get swallowed by the sea as tide came in and when the dawn brought first light, Stefaan Temmerman took the picture we knew was going to be perfect to represent our MASS V. It was a long and cold night." More...

Neurot Recordings proudly announces that Amenra has entered the studio this week to record a fourth full-length, titled "Mass V." The following press release was issued about the album:
"Producing the record is the brilliant Billy Anderson (Eyehategod, Neurosis, Om, Swans, etc.) and for the setting, La Chapelle, an old chapel now turned professional studio, in the heart of the Belgian Ardennes. For Amenra this is the ideal ground to record Mass V, their 'heaviest and slowest album to this day' as per vocalist Colin Van Eeckhout. He continues to reveal how this record was 'the hardest one for us to write and record, it nearly killed us. it's the album we said we were never going to write.' Expect an absolutely crushing release from them later this year on their new home, Neurot Recordings."
As previously reported, Neurot Recordings founder and Neurosis guitarist/vocalist Steve Von Till commented "I am eagerly awaiting the sonically induced spirit quest that will be Mass V at the Church of Ra." More...
The Asymmetry Festival will be taking place from May 3rd - 5th in Poland, with full details available here. The following press release was issued about the fest:
"Asymmetry Festival is a unique event on the Central European scale. Successfully organized since four years, draws fans of the alternative music scene not only from Poland, but Germany, Czech, Slovakia, Hungary and many other neighbouring countries as well. The festival constantly develops its formula in continuous searches for new music genres – genres which defy labelling. The event will take place, for the first time, in a special location on the map of Wroclaw – the XIXc. building of the Browar Mieszczanski [Bourgeois Brewery], which since many years is an important cultural point of the city.
"Apart from the location, the assumptions and priorities in attitude towards the invited artists have changed as well. Among the 40 bands performing there, there is a numerous group of innovative projects, which are difficult to come across on any European festival stage. So side by side with the legendary Sleep, Killing Joke, Red Fang or Amenra, the guests of Asymmetry will also witness performances of all-star groups, created exclusively to in order to open the artistic floodgates of musical visions and the need to evolve.
"Let yourself be carried away by the fun. Come to Wroclaw and become witnesses of something huge."
The lineup and schedule for the festival is as follows: More...
