Iced Earth Re-Issuing Early Albums On Vinyl

Century Media will release the first four studio albums from Iced Earth in July on vinyl format in a variety of color configurations.

"Iced Earth" and "Night Of The Stormrider" will be released on June 10th, "Burnt Offerings" and "The Dark Saga" will be released on June 17th.

All four albums will come in gatefold sleeves featuring the original LP artwork. Layouts have been kept close to the layouts of the original vinyl versions as well. Each LP includes a 60x60 artwork poster and 180 g vinyl. The LP sound has been kept in its original form, with a special vinyl mastering of Patrick Engel, known from his careful mastering works for bands as Jag Panzer, Exodus, Trouble, Tokyo Blade and Candlemass.

While "The Dark Saga" has already seen one vinyl re-issue in 2010 (which is a rare edition by now), the first three Iced Earth albums have never seen an LP re-issue since their initial releases. As prices have reached ridiculous heights lately, it's time to offer you these outstanding and influential albums for a regular price. Pre-order info is available at this location.

The albums "Days Of Purgatory", "Something Wicked This Way Comes" and "Horror Show" will follow in the first quarter of 2016. More...

Iced Earth Writing New Album

Iced Earth is set to begin the writing process for the band's 12th studio album. After a short hiatus, (primarily due to founder, chief songwriter, and guitarist Jon Schaffer’s 2nd cervical fusion surgery), the band is planning out its schedule for the remainder of the year.

Iced Earth fans can expect the next album, tentatively entitled "The Judas Goat," and the subsequent touring cycle to begin in early 2016. Schaffer comments on his recovery and the direction of the new album:

"The recovery after this surgery has been more difficult than the first time around in 2000. Although there have been a few setbacks, I am confident that I’m ready to resume my duties in Iced Earth, directing my full attention to the creative process, production, and touring future of the band.

"We are looking forward to songwriting and getting back in the studio. The creative direction of the new album is rife with intense and heavy emotions, as one would expect from an Iced Earth record, as well as a wide variety of lyrical inspirations and themes.

"I am 100% confident that the bond our band has forged in these last several years will shine through in the music. It’s a brotherhood in every way, and the fans will feel that. I couldn’t be more proud of these guys and everything we’ve achieved together.”

Long time drummer Brent Smedley will be returning to the band for the recording and touring of the next album cycle. Smedley had to step down due to personal family reasons in 2013 shortly before the recording of "Plagues of Babylon."

“We are very pleased to have Brent joining us once again; he’s always been a brother and an important part of the Iced Earth legacy,” says Schaffer.

Jon Schaffer Posts Health / Tour Update

After undergoing surgery, Iced Earth's Jon Schaffer has checked in with the following update:

"Hello brothers and sisters,

"I’m writing to let you know that I’m healing very well. I played guitar a few weeks ago for the first time, and it immediately felt like the surgery worked. Needless to say, I was very relieved.

"Through many months of the Worldwide Plagues Tour I was suffering from a loss of coordination in my hands, numbness, and intense levels of pain. It was a battle every night onstage and it reached a critical point where the cervical fusion had to happen, sooner rather than later. I am happy to report that so far things are going very well in my recovery, and I expect it to stay on this path.

"We are in the planning stages of our next US tour, and that will very likely take place this Winter. So, before you know it we’ll be back on the warpath, and before long, songwriting will commence, and another chapter of Iced Earth history will be in the making. There will be lots of updates in the coming months. We are forging the attack as I am recovering from surgery. The boys and I are ready to get back out there ASAP to lay down the metal!

"Thanks so much for your concern and support!"

Jon Schaffer Issues Surgery Update

Iced Earth recently cancelled upcoming tour dates due to Jon Schaffer undergoing surgery. He has now checked in with the following update about the procedure:

"Hello friends, I’m writing to let you know that I made it through the surgery and am steadily on the road to recovery.

"The surgeon informed us that everything went smooth during the operation and that I should be back in action within a few months.

"Thank you all very much for your support, you truly are the best fans any band could ask for.

"Take care and best to you all, Jon Schaffer."

Iced Earth Cancels Upcoming Shows

Iced Earth's Jon Schaffer has issued the following announcement about cancelling all upcoming live activity due to having surgery:

"It is with sincere apologies that I write to inform you all that Iced Earth is forced to cancel this summer’s festivals and headline shows.

"As many of you know, I underwent surgery on my neck in the year 2000, due to an onstage injury that occurred in 1996. Since that time, I have battled with this problem, and it has begun to accelerate in the past several months, causing additional issues that can no longer be ignored.

"In February, while on tour in Europe, I underwent highly specialized treatment in Germany from a doctor who has helped, among many others, Tony Iommi and Eddie Van Halen. This treatment helped sustain my ability to perform so that we could complete our Worldwide Plagues Tour. However, I am now forced to take further, more invasive action sooner than I intended in order to maintain my overall health.

"Surgery was originally planned to take place in September during our break, but I have now been advised to have the procedure completed sooner rather than later.

"As much as it pains me and everyone else in our camp to have to cancel these dates, this is something that cannot be put aside any longer.

"Once the surgery and recovery are completed, we will be back to work – healthy, strong, and ready to bring the metal to you, our fans.

"Best wishes to you all." More...

Metalunderground.com Official Podcast, Episode 7

Last week on Metalunderground.com's Official Podcast, we brought you two young and very special Canadian bands, The Kindred and Hollow. And sure enough on this week's episode, co-host Kevin Perez (n0thinghead) continues indulging in his love for progressive (and, coincidentally, Canadian) bands.

Toronto, Ontario's Intervals, formed in 2011 and until late last year a strictly instrumental band, have just debuted with the full-length "A Voice Within," within which you'll indeed find a voice: frontman Mike Semesky. Kevin considers some of the musical developments this shift in focus has spurred.

Next, co-host Mike Smith (OverkillExposure) makes a painful, heavy-hearted effort to dissect his conflicted feelings about the latest Iced Earth release "Plagues Of Babylon" (reviewed here). It is the veteran metal band's tenth studio album, and so far to Mike's ears, falls tragically short of the dazzling comeback that was 2011's "Dystopia."

Finally ensues a discussion of singer Howard Jones, the positives and negatives of his contributions to the mighty Killswitch Engage, and his brand new group dubbed Devil You Know.

Take a listen here, enjoy, and offer us your feedback.

More Bands Added To NEM&F Lineup

The latest round of additions to the continually-expanding lineup for 2014's installment of the New England Metal & Hardcore Festival has been disclosed, including Massachusetts' own '90s hardcore punk act, Sam Black Church.

Confirmed as one of the main headliners of the event's third night, Saturday, April 19th, Sam Black Church's set at NEMHF 2014 will mark only the third performance since the group initially disbanded at the turn of the century, and first in Central Massachusetts since the late '90s.

Stated the band upon being asked to take part in the massive event this Spring: "It is amazing what the man we used to know as Ogre has done with the New England Metalfest! We are fucking excited to be a part of it once again!"

The organizers of the fest comment: "Formed in Boston, in June of 1988 by Jesse "Jet" Crandall (vocals), Ben Crandall (guitar), Richard G. Lewis (bass), and J.R. Roach (drums), Sam Black Church was known for their energetic live performances, playing a frenetic blend of hardcore, metal, and thrash. Over the years sharing bills with bands as diverse as Bad Brains, Clutch, Motörhead, Cro-Mags, Fear, and Helmet, they were one of the most popular hardcore bands in the Northeast United States during the 1990s. After releasing three full-lengths on Taang! Records, they left to join Wonderdrug where they remained until they retired in 2000 after releasing a total of seven albums. Since disbanding, Sam Black Church reunited for a sold-out show on September 22, 2007, at The Roxy in Boston, and played a another sold-out performance at Hometown Throwdown #16 with The Mighty Mighty Bosstones at House of Blues in Boston on December 29th, 2013. A documentary of their career by Duncan Wilder Johnson entitled Leave Behind a Groove in the Earth is scheduled for release in 2014."

Also now confirmed to invade this year's festival are Oceano, Scars of Tomorrow, The Last Ten Seconds of Life, InDirections, and Julius Seizure on Thursday, April 17th, and Reflections on Friday, April 18th. The setup for Saturday, April 19th has also been lengthened with Texas In July, Obey The Brave and the aforementioned Sam Black Church performance. Sunday Old School: Iced Earth

Power metal is a genre which almost certainly is most popular in mainland Europe. The continent has given birth to many of the genre's greatest acts such as Blind Guardian, Hammerfall and Gamma Ray and continues to book such acts for their biggest festivals. However, that is not to say that the United States has had no input into the development or popularity of power metal. Indeed, one of the field's most beloved groups hail from Tampa, Florida. A band by the name of Iced Earth.

The seeds of the group were sewn in 1985 when guitarist, Jon Schaffer formed a band named Purgatory. As would be a common theme in the life of Iced Earth, member changes were frequent, with Schaffer remaining the only constant. In 1988, they decided to change their name from Purgatory to the moniker we all know today, which was suggested by a friend of Schaffer's who passed away after a motorcycle accident. They soon caught the attention of record labels with their second demo, "Enter the Realm," which earned them a deal with Century Media. Schaffer, along with drummer Mike McGill, vocalist Gene Adam, bass player Dave Abell and guitarist Randall Shawver, entered the famous Morrisound Recording studio, renowned for producing many of the greatest death metal albums, to record their self titled debut. The album was met with a somewhat mixed response, though it allowed them to perform in Europe for the first time as a support act to Blind Guardian.

They wasted little time in getting to work on a sophomore record, though not without making a few changes first. Mike McGill was replaced with Richey Secchiari and perhaps most notably, Gene Adam was fired from the band after he refused to take singing lessons, his place being taken by John Greely. This new incarnation of the band went back to Morrisound to record, "Night of the Stormrider," which faired a little better with the critics, though remains a very popular entry in the Iced Earth catalogue with their fans. The album also took a little longer to be released in the United States than it did Europe, as the American branch of their label was worried that the album would compete against their debut.
