Axenstar evolved out of the 1998 metal cover band Powerage formed by guitarist Peter Johanson and bassist Magnus Ek. Since 2001, the band has had a multitude of face changes, and both founding members Johanson and Ek have left the band. Axenstar has released four albums, and once replacement members are found, plan to play live shows again.
