Trivium was formed in 2000 in Altamonte Springs Florida - Travis Smith, Matt Heafy and two other band mates met at Travis's house to learn and cover "For Whom the Bell Tolls" for his high school's Battle of the Bands competition. Even though they were inexperienced, they quickly formulated a band - the aggression of Trivium was popular among the high school crowd. Shortly after the Battle of the Bands show Trivium performed in a local music contest, Indiefest, taking 2nd place overall. After a couple local party gigs, Trivium's original singer left the band.

It was decided that Matt would take on the lead vocal duties as well as being the lead & rhythm guitarist and a search was underway for a rhythm guitarist. An old band mate of Travis', Brent Young earned the spot. With the new line up, Trivium played several garage gigs, party gigs, small clubs, and high school level competitions, gaining experience and writing more original songs. Soon, Trivium headed into a local studio to record a three-song demo.

Brent eventually moved to bass after Trivium's bassist departed.

Trivium's fan base began to grow, the band began to receive more local buzz and awards. Carrying a full set of originals, Trivium tore up club after club during the summer, opened for national acts - placed 1st for Battle of the Bands in high school and Matt was awarded The Best Metal Guitarist Award for 2002 presented by The Orlando Metal Awards.

Trivium recorded four more originals for their next demo. After this demo was recorded the musical direction of the band changed to something that the band and critics categorize as Melodic Death Metalcore. After one more 7-song demo EP, LifeForce records from Germany signed the band in May of 2003 and the band released 'Ember To Inferno' before adding second guitarist Corey Beaulieu and joining Roadrunner in April 2004.

More Bands Confirmed For Soundwave Festival 2012

Joining the 60 bands already announced are Staind, Wednesday 13, Unearth, Cathedral, Shadows Fall, Heaven Shall Burn, Your Demise, Kittie, and 14 other (mostly non-metal) bands.

Hole has pulled out of the festival after frontwoman Courtney Love refused to play before Limp Bizkit. Soundwave boss AJ Maddah said on Twitter that he was "relieved we got the moody old cow off the bill. [There’s] no point talking her back, only for her to cancel later, or turn up & act like a rotten twat to other artists, fans, etc."

A third announcement in early December will add another five bands to the lineup, and Danzig is one of the confirmed possibilities. More...

Megadeth, Unearth, Kingdom of Sorrow Slay Mayhem

The heatwave scorching the U.S. has been following the Rockstar Energy Drink Mayhem Festival from shed to shed and leaned on Boston hard as the mercury hit 105 on the Comcast Center tarmac in Mansfield, Mass.

But that didn't stop me and 15,000 or so fellow headbangers from slipping on our black T-shirts and standing in the blistering sun for 10 hours to get our fill of the biggest metal tour of the summer.

Most people in Boston were in the shade, a pool, the beach or some sort of air conditioned locale, but legions of soaked fans stood on the red-hot concrete for hours watching their favorite bands pay them back in spades.

As if it weren't painful enough to just be outside, the Boston crowd didn't disappoint the bands as pit after massive pit opened up across the venue. By the time Jamey Jasta, Kirk Windstein and the rest of Kingdom of Sorrow ripped into "Enlightened to Extinction," the outdoor stage area was a sea of sweaty, swirling, sunburned bodies. With security hosing down the masses, Windstein was a riff machine and Jasta - one of the hardest working dudes in metal - was on point, as usual. More...

Bands Announced For Defenders Of The Faith Tour

Metal Hammer's Defenders Of The Faith tour is back and will be hitting the road on December 1st, tearing it up from Southampton to Glasgow over seven shows until December 8th. This year's bill includes Trivium, In Flames, Rise To Remain, Ghost, and Insense.

"Prepare for the siege on the UK that is the 2011 Metal Hammer Defenders Of The Faith Tour," says Trivium's Matt Heafy. "This is what it's all about: an epic night to celebrate all that is glorious about the diverse world of metal. This bill is a must-see tour and has something every fan of modern metal can enjoy."

"We are glad to be part of such an awesome bill on the Defenders Of The Faith tour," adds Anders Fridén of In Flames. "We are looking forward to playing the UK after such a good time this summer at Sonisphere."

"Without In Flames, Trivium wouldn't exist," explains Matt. "So needless to say, the ability to tour with these legends is a dream come true."

"Rise To Remain are flying the flag for British metal," he says. "They're up and coming stars and good pals of ours too. Ghost are something special; you can feel the electricity and mystery behind Lucifer's house band. Prepare your souls for the sermon. They are a must-see. Insense deliver some pummeling brutality and a sense of catchiness that is all their own."

The mysterious Ghost frontman, Papa Emeritus 1, also corresponded with Metal Hammer to say: "After a few close calls, we are finally embarking on a full-fledged ungodly crusade of thy United Kingdom. Our boss (the old horned codger) is very, very pleased with this opportunity to bring Ghost in front of so many young souls. That is our mission.""We are incredibly excited to be part of the Defenders Of The Faith tour," says Rise To Remain frontman Austin Dickinson. "Touring with such an unbelievable and diverse metal ensemble is a great honour, and we look forward to spreading the Metal Hammer gospel with our buddies in Trivium, and our new friends in In Flames, Ghost and Insense! Get ready, get stoked!" More...
