Defiance, the bay area thrashers that released such albums as "Product of Society" (1989) and "Void Terra Firm" (1990), are disbanding for the second and final time. In 2005, the band reformed and released the comeback album "The Prophecy" in 2009. In a statement on the band's official website, guitarist Jim Adams posted the following statement to the fans:
"End of the Journey:
"Hey All! Jim Adams here,
"I imagine it won't be a surprise to anyone who might read this that Defiance is no longer a band. After coming to the realization that the music industry was falling apart, and without the internal bond that Defiance had in back in their heydays, it was decided (by me) to shut down all activities to avoid being completely financially wiped out.
"Steev and Mark both put it best when they each told me that 'we did what we promised we would do, and that was finish this album for Doug.' [Harrington, who passed away in 2006]
"Having some time to think about what that really means, I have come to agree completely with them. The job is done. Doug is gone, and with him, really...Defiance.
"I have since moved on and joined Severed Fifth www.severedfifth.com and will be releasing a full length album in February 2012 titled 'Liberate'.
"To everyone who supported and followed Defiance over the last 25 years, we would like to thank you. Without the fans, we would have just been 5 knuckleheads destroying our hearing and our livers in some basement in Oakland."
The final line up of Defiance was:
Jim Adams - Guitars
Shawn Bozarth - Guitars
Keven Albert - Vocals
Mike Kaufmann - Bass
Burton Ortega - Drums

California thrashers Defiance have announced they have recruited Burton Ortega as their new drummer. The band also commented on the line-up change:
"After struggling with who should be the next drummer for Defiance and having the wrong drummer in place for one show. Defiance has found a bay area gem. Burton comes from a traditional thrash metal background, playing for years with bay area thrashers Kaos, came in and delivered the goods. We were looking for that fifth finger to fill the glove which was something that we felt was essential for a long term fit. We are very excited about Burton joining Defiance and have had so much fun jamming the old and new tunes and can't wait to unleash the new monster that is Defiance."
California thrashers Defiance have posted footage of their performance at Blake's in Berkeley on December 19th, 2009. The video clip can be viewed below.

We wish both of them continued success in whatever lies ahead for them." More...

Defiance has issued the following update about releasing their new album "The Propechy:"
"Reformed after a 15 year hiatus, bay area thrashers Defiance return with The Prophecy. Currently featuring vocalist Steev Esquivel (Skinlab), guitarist Jim Adams, bassist Mike Kaufmann and drummer Mark Hernandez (Vio-lence, Forbidden), the band recorded the album in San Francisco and in early interviews Kaufmann confirmed, we always felt the band broke up too early so we plan to use this opportunity to pick up where we left off. Formed in 1985 Defiance recorded their first record in 1988. Product of Society (Roadrunner) was produced by Jeff Waters (Annihilator) and immediately found the band an impressive worldwide audience. Beyond Recognition, the bands third and last album was released in 1992. In 2005 the band finally regrouped after years of requests from fans. The band signed with Candlelight in late 2008 and immediately set to work."
"The Prophecy" will be released on Candlelight records on October 19th in Europe. The cover artwork can be viewed here. The track listing will be as follows:
2. The Prophecy
3. Bastard Son
4. The War Inside
5. Fuel The Fire
8. Desert Sands
9. Dissolving Around You
11. Eyes Of The Front

Metal Mind Productions has announced the re-release of "Product Of Society," the debut album by Defiance. This thrash metal band formed in 1985 by Brad Bowers (guitar), Mike Kaufmann (bass) and Matt Vander Ende (drums) belonged to the San Francisco thrash fraternity of the late 80's, along with bands like Testament, Exodus or Forbidden. "Product Of Society" was produced by Annihilator's guitarist Jeff Waters and managed to attract attention in the thrash community despite the frequent label as a Testament knock-off. It was the only album by Defiance to feature Ken Elkington on vocals and had cover art by Ed Repka.

Last Friday (March 14), bassist Mike Kaufmann of the San Francisco thrashers DEFIANCE was robbed at gunpoint by six guys at the West Oakland BART station (Bay Area Rapid Transit; rail service which connects San Francisco with the East Bay).
Commented Kaufmann: "I was barely able to escape and I'm VERY lucky to be alive. It was their intent to take everything I had and then kill me. The Oakland police caught them about an hour later and I made a positive identification. [Local TV station] Channel 7 will be doing a story about it because the crime was witnessed by BART police and they were too afraid to help me. I'm pretty much a wreck right now and I haven't slept much at all. What the fuck is this world coming to?"
DEFIANCE, best known for their seminal late '80s/early '90s Roadrunner releases "Void Terra Firma" and "Beyond Recognition", recently posted a new song, entitled "The Voice", on the band's MySpace page. The track is a rough mix from the group's sessions at Trident Studios in Concord, California with producer Juan Urteaga (EXODUS, SKINLAB, VILE) and is expected to appear on DEFIANCE's forthcoming fourth album, due later in the year via an as-yet-undetermined label. The final demo recorded by the San Francisco Bay Area thrashers DEFIANCE prior to morphing into INNER THRESHOLD is now available for download from DEFIANCE's web site, The demo, recorded in the winter of 1994 was produced by Rob Beaton (HEATHEN, DEFIANCE).
DEFIANCE is currently recording a new CD at Trident Studios in Concord, CA with producer Juan Urteaga (EXODUS, SKINLAB, VILE). Along with the new album, DEFIANCE is also working on putting together a DVD, tentatively titled "Decade(s) of Defiance", that will cronicle the band's entire career from 1985 to the present.
Part of the so-called "second wave" of Bay Area thrash (which also included the likes of FORBIDDEN, VIO-LENCE, DEATH ANGEL, and TESTAMENT), DEFIANCE officially disbanded in 1993 after the departure of vocalist Steev Esquivel (who would go on to form SKINLAB, and later RE:IGNITION), while the remaining members, with the addition of vocalist Dave Godfrey White (HEATHEN), formed INNER THRESHOLD, which would also eventually disband. Singer Steev Esquivel (SKINLAB) from legendary Oakland thrashers DEFIANCE has issued the following update:
"Well, I finally got my ass in the studio and completed one song for the upcoming release. Once again back at Trident studios working with producer Juan Urteaga, this shit sounds fuckin sick!!! No shit, I mean, after almost 15 years of not being a band the guys wrote an amazing record. And a true Defiance record at that.
The guitars and bass are fuckin brutal, the absolute best tones the band has ever had. The drums are amazing — Mark Hernandez really stepped things up, tons of slammin' double bass; the kid was on fire and it shows. Vocally, it's got to be one of the most challenging recordings I have ever done. It's been awhile since I had to sing to music tuned as high as Defiance (E 440). Definitely a challenge as I'm pushing myself to return to more of a singing style verses my Skinlab voice, which is much lower and more aggressive than what is called for in Defiance.
I'm really stoked to be apart of the album and doing my best to make the old-school Defiance fans happy as well as making our brother Dougie (Harrington - late guitarist) proud."
