Finnish folk metal pioneers Korpiklaani have issued further details on their upcoming 8th studio album “Manala,” which will be released via Nuclear Blast on the 3rd of August. The cover artwork was created by Finnish artist Jan Yrlund, and Korpiklaani vocalist Jonne Järvelä states:
“On the album cover, our band mascot Vaari represents Väinämöinen, who is one of the main characters in the Finnish national epic Kalevala. As most of the lyrics on 'Manala' are based on the Kalevala, Jan Yrlund decided to draw his inspiration for the cover artwork from the beautiful but yet brutal depiction of the underworld in Finnish mythology.” More...
Finnish traditional folk metal pioneers Korpiklaani have revealed the first details on their upcoming 8th studio record and 4th release via Nuclear Blast Records. The record will be entitled “Manala” and is scheduled for a release on the 3rd of August 2012. Main man Jonne Järvelä explains the album title:
“Manala is the realm of the dead - the underworld in Finnish mythology. Tuonela, Tuoni, Manala and Mana are used synonymously. This place is best known for its appearance in the Finnish national epic Kalevala, on which many of our new songs are based. In the 16th poem of Kalevala, Väinämöinen, a shamanistic hero travels to Manala to seek for knowledge about the dead. On the journey he meets the ferrywoman (similar to Charon), a girl, Tuonen tytti, or Tuonen piika (Death's maid), who takes him across the river of Tuoni. However, on the isle of Tuoni he is not given the spells he was originally looking for and he barely manages to escape the place. After his return he curses anyone trying to enter the place alive.”
For those of you who are now afraid of not being able to understand the mystical Finnish lyrics on the album – don’t worry: “Manala” will come to you with a bonus CD, including the whole album with English lyrics.
Stay tuned for further information on the album. In the meantime, check out the song “Metsälle” that offers you a foretaste of the new compositions at this location.
Finnish traditional folk metal pioneers Korpiklaani have recently finished the recordings of their upcoming 8th studio album that will be released in summer. As a foretaste for what you can look forward to and to make the waiting time more bearable, Korpiklaani proudly presents the brand new track "Metsälle."
Front man Jonne grants insight into the song’s lyrical concept: “Metsälle can be seen as kind of a prayer to the ancient gods to ask for luck for the tough hunt deep in the woods in cold winter time. Not only is the old man in the song praying for success but – even more importantly – for a safe way through the dangerous frostiness.”

Finnish folk band Korpiklaani announced a new European tour for April 2012 and introduced new fiddler Tuomas Rounakari who joined the band. The band's forthcoming album "Kunnia" is scheduled for release on July 18th (Finland) and July 20th (World) through Nuclear Blast Records.
The band made the following post on their Facebook page about the addition of Rounakari:
We took Tuomas aboard when we noticed that he was actually the only sensible choice for us. We had already thought of him before but were always afraid that he'd be too busy to join us, because Korpiklaani demands much time from every band member. When we finally asked him, he replied that it'd be an exciting challenge and big chance for him, so he agreed to take over the fiddle for us - we're more than happy about his decision! At the moment the whole band is gathered in the studio where we've recently entered the final stage of recording, with Jonne laying down his vocal lines and only a few folk parts waiting to be recorded. If all goes to plan, the album will be ready for mixing at the end of March.

Finnish folk metal pioneers Korpiklaani have posted two video updates on YouTube in anticipation of the band’s upcoming “Ukon Wacka North American Tour.” You can check out the first clip below for an exclusive in-studio update straight from Petrax Studio, as accordionist Juho Kauppinen gears up for the headlining North American run. Be sure to listen carefully as new violinist, Teemu Eerola, records his parts to a new song called “Metsälle.” The second video is available after the jump and contains a further glimpse at the new track.
The “Ukon Wacka North American Tour” will kick off next week in Montreal, with support coming from Arkona, Polkadot Cadaver, and Forged In Flames. Full details on the tour are available here. Korpiklaani is touring in support of its latest release, "Ukon Wacka" (reviewed here), which was released last February on Nuclear Blast Records.
Finnish folk metal pioneers Korpiklaani, who will be recording a new album in November, have announced their upcoming "Ukon Wacka" North American tour. Support will come from Russia's Arkona, who will be making a North American debut. Polkadot Cadaver and Forged in Flames will complete the package.
According to the band, "Ukon Wacka, or Ukon Vakat, is a pagan sacrificial feast from ancient times, on which a special made beer richly flowed. As can be expected from the title, this album has an ancient and very folky feel and is totally in Finnish. The album consists of 10 songs, among which you will find a song name 'Tequila', which is especially written for (and inspired by) our South American fans, with whom we celebrated such hard times, and who welcomed us so warmly, when we were touring in South America."

Korpiklaani has checked in with the following announcement about entering the studio to record a new album and follow-up to "Ukon Wacka" (reviewed here):
"We are happy to announce that on November 7th we will invade the Petrax-studios in Hollola again to record our next album. The title is still subject of discussion, so we cannot reveal it. The amount of songs is unsure yet; we keep on writing… inspiration flows!
"Many songs are based on the Kalevala (our national epic). The release date too is under discussion.
"So, not a lot of news, but we guessed that you would like to know that another album is on its way, a really cool album, the best album we’ve ever made… at least, we think so."
I was quite tired walking to DOM from work this past Friday. Long week and lots of rain had taken their toll, but soon I relized: Who cares how long and dragging the day is, when you know damn well you will be seeing Korpiklaani in the evening! You’d think after seeing them 6 times, it would begin to feel routine, but not the case- Korpiklaani is an experience that should be repeated over and over again; and as often as possible.
Upon arriving at the venue, it’s a load off my shoulders to see all these happy smiling Finns, armed with drinks and just patiently (some not so patiently….) waiting for the night to start. After a pre show interview and beer with Jarkko Aalto, I’m more than ready for the set to commence!
The first band this evening is Frosttide; 2010 Finnish Metal Expo winners of the Underground Act of the Year award. Based in Jyväskylä, these guys live up to the title. Their stage presence is charismatic and energetic though they are quite young! Singer Joni’s deep growls provide perfect companion to the heroic sounding guitar lines and blast beats. More...
Swiss folk metal band Eluveitie announced its very own festival "Eluveite and Friends" to be held on December 30, 2011 at the Volkshaus in Zurich, Switzerland. Ticket information can be found at this location.
The complete billing for the show:
Sabaton announced that the band will headline the MetalCamp 12 Festival which is to be held on August 5-10, 2012 in Tomlin, Slovenia. Other confirmed acts are Paradise Lost, Kataklysm, Korpiklaani and Heathen.

Finnish folk metallers Korpiklaani recently announced the recruitment of new violin player Teemu Eerola. The band has now checked in with the following statement about Teemu's first show with Korpiklaani:
"Yesterday we had our first gig wit our new violin player Teemu Eerola. It was pretty exciting for us all, but especially for him. Teemu is still studying at the Folk music department of the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki.
"Playing in a band for big audiences is fairly new to him, but he did fine and we are really proud to welcome him as a new member of Korpiklaani. The next big step will be the upcoming North America tour, which involves Canada, the US and a one day trip to Mexico."
You can check out photos of Korpiklaani performing live with the band's new violin player by heading over to Facebook.
Finnish folk metal act Korpiklaani announced that they have replaced long time violin player Hittavainen. His replacement is Teemu Erola. The band's announcement reads as follows:
"The Finnish folk metal ambassadors Korpiklaani announce a change in the lineup for the first time since 2005. Hittavainen who's been with band since the beginning will leave the band. There is a mutual understanding between him and the rest of the band and there is no big drama involved. His personal health issues made the constant touring and recording impossible.
The band found Hittavainen's replacement in a young prodigy Teemu Eerola, who's already been rehearsing hard with the band. Teemu has already proven himself to be an excellent replacement and magnificent company. He also plays violin.
The first show with the new lineup will be in Rotterdam on September 24. In Finland the revitalized band can be spotted in Pori on October 6 and in Helsinki later in the same month. The real test for Teemu's abilities and endurance will be the 24-date North American tour
starting on November 23."
