The Grammys have been awarded, February is winding down, and we are officially late with our Best Of Year in Metal acknowledgments. So let's get to it. Like every year, I polled our diverse staff of metalheads to obtain their picks in several categories for 2010.
2010 was an interesting year in metal. Was it good? Yes. But not what one might expect at the outset. There were a lot of releases by big names, but most did not make the splash one would expect. Iron Maiden, Rob Zombie, Fear Factory, Dimmu Borgir, Dark Tranquility, and Living Sacrifice all put out decent albums, but nothing too bold or worth raving over. 2010 was one more year removed from the fading metalcore trend; a year in which we could savor thrash's second life, and melodic death metal is still living strong. When the trendiest things are a return to thrash and technical metal (despite losing much of its death metal influences), that's not too bad from a metal perspective.
It's hard to say 2010 was a year for the underground to shine. The true underground bands rarely get widely noticed. But there were quite a few lesser known bands making names for themselves and grabbing their fair share of attention last year. Why is this? Is it a sign of a changing of the guard in light of the aging greats, and perhaps despite the thrash revival? It's hard to say, but personally, I discovered a lot of new bands that I thoroughly enjoy, so I am all for continuing along this path.
Let's get down to the details and talk about those bands that made 2010 a solid year for heavy metal by announcing the Metalunderground.com staff picks for 2010. The staff picks include the following categories: Best Metal Album of 2010, Best Metal DVD of 2010, Best Metal Newcomer of 2010, Best Live Act of 2010, and Most Anticipated Release for 2011. More...

Finnish folk metallers Korpiklaani have issued the following announcement about releasing a new album:
"Dear fans, a bit late, but still a big thanks to all of you who came to our shows. We were happy to see so many old friends again and meet so many new ones! We have a little surprise for you; we will go on tour again in March 2011, a new Paganfest Tour! Apart from us, also Unleashed, Moonsorrow, Varg, Arafel and Kivimetsän Druidi will play, and on some special shows even Eluveitie and Heidevolk will take part. So, a big box full of goodies will be presented to you, for long evenings with great music, atmosphere and joy!
"We have been pretty busy finishing our upcoming album Ukon Wacka. Ukon Wacka, or Ukon Vakat, is a pagan sacrificial feast from ancient times, on which a special made beer richly flowed. As can be expected from the title, this album has an ancient and very folky feel and is totally in Finnish. To make the lyrics understandable for non-Finnish people, we will add an English description/translation in the booklet as usual.
"The album consists of 10 songs, among which you will find a song name Tequila, which is especially written for (and inspired by) our South American fans, with whom we celebrated such hard times, and who welcomed us so warmly, when we were touring in South America. Another surprise is the title song, Ukon Wacka, in which a special guest features: the famous Finnish singer Tuomari Nurmio! Last but not least features a tribute song (Päät pois tai hirteen) to the Finnish rock band Peer Günt, a great and underestimated band. We hope and expect that this album will give you as much joy as we had making it; a big folky feast for all! You only have to wait a bit, the release date is scheduled for February 4th 2011."

Finnish folk metallers Korpiklaani have issued the following statement regarding their upcoming co-headlining European tour with Eluveitie:
"After all this touring far abroad, we decided that it might be time for a new European tour, after all, we don't want to neglect all our great European fans and friends. So, we are happy to announce that we will team-up with our friends from Eluveitie for a co-headlining tour in October. This European Tour starts off at October 8th, and is the last chapter of our Karkelo World Tour, which started in April 2009 in the U.S.A. We will play 23 shows altogether, and we will visit Poland, Slovakia, Hungary, Bulgaria, Croatia, Austria, Germany, Czech Republic, Italy, France, Spain and England.
"Before the start of this European tour we will play at four festivals, like Summer Breeze in Germany, and the legendary Dynamo Open Air Holland in Eindhoven, Holland. In-between all festivals we managed to prepare, and even partly record, a new album at the Petrax studio in Hollola. Our upcoming album is scheduled for release in February 2011. Even though this new album will be released in winter, it definitely has a strong ‘midsummer-mood’. We are happy to announce, that one new song features a guest appearance from one of the most respected Finnish singers, and famous songwriter, who has been strongly present in the Finnish music culture for over three decades.
"Lately we have many troubles with Myspace, even uploading the flyer does not work, and adding shows gives many error messages. As soon as Myspace works okay again (which we still hope and wait for) we will put everything also online."
