Korpiklaani Announces First Ever Live DVD/CD

One does not simply stop Korpiklaani. For the first time ever, the Finns have captured and immortalized the power of the live performance on the first ever live Blu-ray/DVD+2CD package titled "Live at Masters of Rock," which is due to be released on August 25th via Nuclear Blast.

After hearing its title, it's easy to conclude that the performance was recorded at the identically named festival in Vizovice, Czech Republic. But there's even more to be excited about since this release doesn't just include Korpiklaani's show from 2016, it also houses a second full show from 2014 as a bonus feature. The 2016 concert features guest appearances from Tero Hyväluoma (additional fiddler) as well as Toni Perttula (additional accordion player), Sami's identical twin brother. The mixing and mastering of "Live at Masters of Rock" were both handled by frontman Jonne Järvelä.

Jonne comments: "This our first ever DVD release, and we are quite proud of it. It has no backing tracks, no choirs, no samples, all the mistakes are included. It is just us, Korpiklaani, pure live rock 'n' roll… I spent a lot of time during the mastering process with Svante Forsbäck who recently handled the Rammestein mastering and we worked very hard to get the right ambience and crowd sound. So when you turn it up loud, it feels like you are right there in the thick of it." More...

Korpiklaani Releases Single Supporting FC Lahti

Finnish folk metal group Korpiklaani is releasing a new digital single today supporting the 20th Anniversary of local football team FC Lahti, who play in the Finnish Veikkausliiga.

Jonne Järvelä states: “When I was asked if Korpiklaani would want to support the local football team playing at the top level in Finland, my answer was definitely yes. My first idea on how to take this forward was the thing that is important to us as a band, to write a song, a new official anthem for FC Lahti, and here it is now. Lyrics are not just about football, but also about love for your home town without forgetting it's history. I wish the fans of FC Lahti and everyone else too will like the song.”

Tomi Honkanen, the Managing director (President) of FC Lahti adds: "FC Lahti and Korpiklaani are two strong brands that generate strong emotions in Lahti and internationally. At FC Lahti we highly value that Korpiklaani wears our colours and brings our great FC Lahti to the world. Lahti rocks!” More...

A Day At Leyendas Del Rock

Europe is renowned in the metal world for it's many metal and rock festivals, with particular focus being shed on Germany. However, many other countries are now getting in on the action, with Belgium and the Czech Republic becoming more well known for the Graspop Metal Meeting and Brutal Assault festivals respectively. Spain is also making strides in the field, with such events as Resurrection Fest and the growing reputation of another festival in the south eastern area of the country, Villena to be exact, named Leyendas del Rock.

Having only been able to attend for the Thursday, we arrived on the first full day just in time to catch the final few songs of veteran Danish rockers, D-A-D. Though being unfamiliar with the group, they displayed a frantic energy and a passion to win over as many newcomers as they could, putting in a shift that put plenty of younger bands to shame. Despite catching only a glimpse, I will certainly be checking out more of their catalogue in the near future.

Up next on the second main stage, a system which is becoming used by more festivals across the continent, was British based power metal act, Dragonforce. I'm sure most readers are familiar and plenty will remember trying not to break their fingers playing, "Through the Fire and the Flames" on guitar hero, so there's not much need for an introduction. Although they've been the subject of ridicule and criticism, the band actually carry themselves very well. Stand in frontman Alessio Garavello is great at interacting with the crowd and all members perform with focus and skill. They might not be everyone's cup of tea, but Dragonforce did themselves proud on this day. More...

Korpiklaani And Moonsorrow Pillage London

North London is no stranger to heavy metal shows, with venues like the Underworld, the Koko and the Electric Ballroom (all in Camden) regularly hosting bands from the genre. The 02 Academy in Islington has really been spoiling fans of the genre this week however as only a day after Udo Dirkschneider and Anvil graced the stage (see review here,) two of Finland's most beloved bands docked in the capital to treat the Islington crowd to a grand but highly enjoyable night of pagan metal.

I arrived at the venue to find that Moonsorrow had just started, opening with the title track from their new album, "Jumalten Aika" and immediately capturing the attention of the crowd, who had packed this relatively small but still impressive concert hall. The band are a seriously impressive live act, in addition to their complex compositions, somehow creating images in the mind despite their striking stage presence. Just listening to songs like "Suden Tunti" and "Jotunheim," I could practically see the Viking vessels arriving on the shores of England (I'm glad they weren't really, the Vikings took all our hot women to Iceland last time they showed up.)
