Below is our complete Moonspell news coverage, including columns and articles pertaining to the band. Some articles listed may be indirectly related, such as side projects of the band members, etc.
Note: We began associating news directly with bands in late 2003. Therefore, earlier band news may not be listed on this page.
A Brazilian tribute to Moonspell is coming soon titled "Em Nome Do Medo." Black metal outfit Patria has released a video clip teasing it's contribution to the tribute album, which can be seen at Facebook here. The band also comments:
"We're recording our cover version for the song 'Wolfshade' that will be featured on the official Brazilian Tribute to Moonspell.
"Check out this short preview, still without vocals though. This track is being mixed by our talented friend Fabiano Penna (Ex Rebaelliun and The Ordher). PS.: Sorry about the bad camera sound! More coming soon!!"
So far this year, the Sunday Old School column has certainly been living up to the ambition of covering more bands from around the world, having for the first time featured bands from Greece (Rotting Christ,) Poland (Behemoth and Vader) and Belgium (Channel Zero) and so this week, we continue our global metal excavating by looking at a Portuguese band for the first time, one of the finest examples of gothic metal, Moonspell. Moonspell were formed in 1989 in Amadora, located in the North of Lisboa, initially under the moniker, Morbid God. In 1992, the group decided to change their name and got to work on new material, which they released in 1994 as part of their debut EP, "Under the Moonspell." The EP proved popular in the metal underground and impressed executives at Century Media Records enough that they offered the band a six album deal. It wasn’t long before the band had recorded their first full length effort, which was released in April 1995 under the title, "Wolfheart" and was considerably more in line with black metal than the gothic vibe which they would become known for.
Although the album was somewhat ignored by the metal media, it allowed the group to embark on a tour of Europe, during which guitarist, Mantus left the band, to be replaced by Ricardo Amorim. A new guitarist also meant a new style for Moonspell, who quickly adopted a gothic approach to their music, which they showcased on their sophomore album, "Irreligious," released in 1996. The album was a landmark for the band not only in terms of style change, but also their first single and music video for the song, "Opium," as well as some other Moonspell classics such as "Awake" and "Full Moon Madness," which has become the standard final song at the majority of Moonspell concerts. In addition to these personal successes, the band also found some commercial achievement when the record sold over ten thousand copies in their native Portugal. However, as with the cycle for "Wolfheart," the band would soon find themselves departing with another member, this time with bass player, Ares, whose fallout with the group was bad enough that lawsuits were soon brought into the mix. Portuguese Gothic metal band Moonspell has issued the following statement about the 10th anniversary of the passing of metal legend Quorthon:
"Ten years and one day have passed since Quorthon left us and headed to Valhalla but his legacy lives through, in the shape of the many fans and enthusiasts whom followed his footsteps with their bands and projects.
"Moonspell is one of them and we would like to pay just a modest tribute by hailing Quorthon and his memory, not only in many of our songs and lyrics but also in the way he dealt with his fans.
"Fernando and many of the original members of Moonspell to be (Morbid God) were there and you can spot him/them at 4.29 (Fernando is on a Sodom shirt, mullet hair eheh) but according to him, this was maybe the happiest day of his life.
"The week after Moonspell was born. Enjoy and never forget Quorthon on his way up high!"
Hellenic Live Chaos has uploaded footage of Moonspell performing live in Greece, which can be seen below. The band comments:
"Here's a fan video that really reflects the great atmosphere of the Night of the Wolf in Athens, Greece. Again, we are so thankful for this response and all the great reviews and praise we received both on location and via social networking.
"Now it's time to write some more for the next album and gear up for the Out and Loud festival in Geiselwind, Germany, next Saturday, our next stop. Under the spell, enjoy!"
Gothic Portuguese metallers Moonspell have returned to North America to begin their headline tour tonight in Fort Lauderdale, FL at Culture Room. We also recently chatted with the band about the trek, which can be read right here.

Moonspell Frontman Fernando Ribeiro commented on the tour and the band's return to North America:
"We are excited to be back in the North America and to celebrate every night with our fans in every city we play. It's the 11th time we have come to the States and for sure we will be playing not only from the present but plenty from the past. We invite everyone out there reading these words to come and support us if you know us or come out and discover us, if you're into the darkest of metals, the heaviest of Goth America painted in noir, the Spell is here!"
The organizers of the Total Metal Open Air Festival have announced that tickets will go on sale February 3rd via Ticketone, Bookingshow, and Metaltix. Production manager Fabrizio Fiorito comemnts:
“This year we are preparing an edition which will be far superior to all prior ones for both the number and quality of the bands and for all the care that we are having for the non-musical entertainments of the festival. A highest ticket cost was lawful and justified, but just because of the major change that we are doing we would like to introduce the 'new' TMF to as much people as possible. Certainly we're sacrificing part of the possible income, but, with foresight, we look to the future and we are confident that a low ticket price will bring us a lot more people and then will make the event even more famous and popular."
The Italian festival takes place on July 19th and 20th, 2014 and so far Annihilator, Moonspell, and Death Angel have been confirmed, with more announcements coming shortly. More...
